ARKTIKA.1 marks 4A Games' first VR game. Known for its atmospheric first-person shooters Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Metro Redux, and the recently announced Metro Exodus, one would expect the same level of detail in ARKTIKA.1, and the short trailer available on its Oculus Store page bears that out.

VR shooters tend to follow the same "stand-in-one-place" model due to the lack of acceptable and intuitive motion controls, and it appears that ARKTIKA follows the crowd in that aspect. Short of teleportation, which unfailingly gets me completely confused as to where I am in the world, there aren't many other choices. With that in mind, the primary differentiation between the dozens of games already out there comes from better weapons and compelling environments. Although it's risky to read too much into a 1:00 video, it does appear that ARKTIKA will measure up well.

The premise of the game doesn't break new ground - this is a genre that has been very heavily mined. That having been said, here's what 4A has to say about it:

Nearly a century into the future – in the aftermath of a silent apocalypse – Earth has entered a new ice age. Only the equatorial regions remain habitable, yet pockets of humanity still manage to survive in small numbers all over the planet. These regions of civilization sit on resource-rich, highly desirable territories to the north and south. As a mercenary hired by Citadel Security, you must protect one of the last colonies in the wastelands of old Russia from violent raiders, marauders, and horrifying creatures.

ARKTIKA.1 is set to arrive on October 10 and will be compatible with Oculus™ Touch. The game can be pre-ordered today for $26.99 – 10% off the retail price.
