Gabe talks about VR and says three games are coming from Valve that will take advantage of it

It's almost been a year since the HTC Vive has come out, and it's been a pretty fun to experience what I consider the birth of consumer VR. I've played a ton of games with it and recently I've been diving deep into Elite Dangerous with the headset.

Gabe Newell of Valve Software, who partnered with HTC to make the HMD, is banking on the future of VR. In an interview with Gamasutra, he talks about what they have in store with VR and some of those plans should excite a lot of you that have a Vive.

Valve is planning on three big games to take advantage of the HTC Vive. And here you thought the company was afraid of the number three. There's no details on what those three games could be about, but I'm sure many folks are hoping it involves the Half-Life universe and perhaps the Left 4 Dead series as well. Or, it could be something totally new, which I'm fine with as well.

The challenge, of course, is to make the games fun and comfortable. There is no way something like how the current Portal game will work because a few times flying through a portal while wearing a Vive will cause many people to vomit. But for some folks like me, playing a game that allows you to walk through an area using a thumb pad is OK as long as it's not too fast.

Gabe envisions a future of a wireless headset, which is coming as an add-on this year and he hints that maybe we'll get an integrated solution in 2018. There's going to be a need for better processors and better video cards as developers start pushing the quality and fidelity of VR.

Gabe also thinks that some day, we'll be playing house scale experiences, not just room scale experiences.

Hardware is something that Valve's gotten into in the past few years so it's no surprise they're looking at producing some things for the VR market. Gabe points to the prototype hand controller they showed off recently at Steam Dev Days.

Valve seems to have a gameplan setup to help make VR a longterm success. Here's hoping what Valve has planned for in the VR world comes soon and blows our minds away.
