Grab your horse and sword so you can Mount & Blade on console

More On: Mount & Blade Mount & Blade: Warband

I somehow missed last month's announcement that this was happening. But Mount & Blade: Warband is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 next Friday, September 16. Mount & Blade: Warband is basically Mount & Blade II, it was just never called that.

In addition to the medieval action role-playing stuff—with a heavy emphasis on horse-mounted combat and no fantasy shenanigans—Warband lets you: build your own faction and engage in direct multiplayer combat. There's no Napoleonic Wars or Viking Conquest DLC on console (yet?), and there's no modding support on console (yet?). But there's a very cool game here, even if the only thing you're going to learn for the first few hours is how hard mounted combat is to pull off. All the army building, lord pledging and castle siege stuff managed to sell over 1 million copies of the original Mount & Blade. It's cool to see this rare kind of game make it onto consoles, an even rarer place for this kind of rare game.

About that multiplayer combat thing: on PC, you can have up to 250 players (!) engaged in combat on one battlefield. If they can pull that off on console, that will be unprecedented. Heck, if they could even do a half or even a quarter of that population in multiplayer combat, that'd be unprecedented.

Again, Mount & Blade: Warband is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on September 16.
