Kung Lao comes back from the dead and joins the cast of Mortal Kombat X

More On: Mortal Kombat X

Now that the new year is here, the videogame announcements, releases and reveals should pick up again, and Netherealm Studios wasted no time in revealing a new fighter for Mortal Kombat X. The January issue of Game Master Magazine featured Mortal Kombat X and revealed that Kung Lao will be part of the roster.

Kung Lao seems to have aged significantly since his appearance in Mortal Kombat 9 and appears to have been resurrected from the dead as well as he was one of the many characters that died in that game. Of course death has never really been permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe but it seemed like they were taking the story a bit more seriously so while Kung Lao has returned, I wouldn't expect to see all of the dead MK9 cast return.

As with all Mortal Kombat X kombatants, he will come will three different variations as well.

  • Tempest - Allows the player to use his hat as an orbiting shield protecting him from incoming physical and projectile damage. Also allows you to control his spin move so you can move across the map.
  • Buzz Saw - Uses his hat as a buzz saw. Allows you to throwing it in various directions, dealing damage.
  • Hat Trick - Allows you to toss the hat out, which it will stay until you summon it's return. The hat will spin until it hits an enemy and deals damage.

The magazine also gave us some tidbits about Mortal Kombat X's online mode. Upon starting online for the first time, you will choose one of five different alliances. The alliances are The White Lotus, Lin Kuei, Brotherhood of Shadows, Special Forces or the Black Dragon. All players of the alliance will gather "battle points" when playing in both single player and multiplayer. This kind of sounds like The Last of Us's factions system and I assume after a set time an alliance will be declared the winner.

I am one of the biggest Mortal Kombat fans you could ever meet but honesty, I was never a big fan of Kung Lao so this announcement was a bit of a disappointment for me. The one thing that excites me the most about Mortal Kombat X is that it is a new generation of Kombat and there will be tons of new characters added to the cast.

Unfortunately, since the initial announcement at E3, we still only know about newcomers Cassie Cage, D'Vorah, Kotal Khan and Ferra/Torr. All of the new character announcements have been for returning Mortal Kombat alumni which is incredibly disappointing to me. I just hope that the announcements will pick up now that the game is only a few months away and we get some brand new characters in those announcements as well.
