CES 2009: Westinghouse

by: Dan -
More On: CES 2009
Westinghouse Digital went a different route this year and set up shop at the prestigious Stirling Club Las Vegas at Turnberry Place across from the Las Vega Hilton. John and Sean went with me and we were able to check out the new LCD televisions and well as LCD PC monitors that Westinghouse had on display.

The first units we looked at were the new 120Hz LCD televisions that Westinghouse announced at the CES. The three 120Hz models will come in 55” (TX-55F350Z), 42” (TX-42F970Z) and 37” (TX-37F510Z) sizes and have full 1080p resolution. The 37” (June/July retail) will have 5000:1 contrast, 6.5ms response time and 4 HDMI inputs. The 42” (May/June retail) will drop to 4000:1 contrast, but increase to 4ms response time and four HDMI. The 55” (May retail) will decrease to three HDMI, have 5000:1 contrast and 6.5 ms response. All three looked really good and I imagine will be priced about 5-10% lower than similar sized TVs when they hit retail shelves.

One item that caught our (especially John’s) attention was the L2635HW monitor. It was one of the few PC monitors on display at the show that featured resolution of 1900x1200. In addition to being a 26” 16:10 aspect ratio LCD monitor, it has 1000:1 contrast ratio (5000:1 dynamic), 2ms refresh, 170 and 160 degree (H and V) viewing angles and both and HDMI and DVI inputs in addition to the normal VGA. A 24” version of the HW monitor was also on display, but dropped to 16:9 aspect with only 1920x1080 resolution. While the other specs are almost identical to the 2635HW, the L2427HW does include a second HDMI input. Both of these monitors are ideal for both PC gaming as well as use with HD Cable or satellite. The three of us were impressed with both the quality of still images as well as the smoothness of the video feed we saw. Both monitors are scheduled for a March 2009 retail release, but pricing was unavailable.

Other models we were unable to get a real close look at, but were introduced at the show were several 1080p LCD TVs (including the VK-40F580D DVD combo unit) due to retail between now and May, as well as several 720p smaller LCD TVs (37” and smaller) that are due to hit shelves between now and May/June.

Overall Westinghouse a solid lineup at the show and should continue to provide good HDTV’s at an affordable price for the 2009 model year. Look for GamingNexus to get a hold of the 26” PC monitor and one of the 1080p 120Hz TVs for testing later this year.  Check out the specs on all the new products along with some images after the jump:
