If you don't have this game, go get it now. Seriously, just go. You won't hurt my feelings, I'll be here with another news post when you get back. GO. BUY. NOW.
Developed by Namco Bandai and Digital Extremes! Penned by God of War Writer Marianne Krawczyk! Set to launch Q1 2013 before the new movie! And!....just as likely to be disappointing as far as I'm concerned.

Yep, it's the new Star Trek game and in spite of my overall "meh" reaction to 2009's rather generic Trek reboot, I have some valid concerns about new game. Marianne Krawczyk will probably bring some talent to the writing, but she's being helped by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the guys who wrote the jumbled, embarrassing and plot-hole-filled '09 movie. It's also yet another co-op cover shooter, essentially Gears of Star Trek.

This is the biggest problem I have with Abrams and his NuTrek. He's content to turn it into just one more bland, loud summer popcorn experience, without any of the nuance, social commentary or texture of the Star Trek universe. I don't mind a continuity-smashing reboot as long as it's done well (Casino Royale, Batman Begins), but Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman don't seem to understand that the flashy scifi in Star Trek is merely a vehicle for the franchise's many messages, and not the whole point. Turning Star Trek into just a co-op shooter and dumping it into a market flooded with co-op shooters speaks to this massive lack of understanding about what Star Trek is about, so color me even more skeptical of this reboot series and its accompanying game doing anything worthwhile or interesting with the Star Trek name.

You know what game genre would work really well for Star Trek? A huge, galaxy-spanning RPG. Like Mass Effect. But Mass Effect already did that, so I think I'll keep getting my Star Trek from Bioware.
Ever since Lollipop Chainsaw was announced, I've been highly skeptical. I love Suda 51's work but this seemed just a little too exploitative and, well, obvious. Then I saw this trailer, where it is revealed that protagonist Juliet decapitated her boyfriend Nick to save him from a zombie infection, and carries his disembodied talking cranium around on her belt. Now THERE'S the classic Suda 51 insanity I was looking for!

And in terms of Suda 51, his games really don't get any more romantic and Valentine's Day-ey than this. That said, I'm....hesitant to show this trailer to my girlfriend. We play an awful lot of Left 4 Dead, and who knows what she might start thinking when she's packing that chainsaw....
What, you thought wargame simulations were only played solitary by lonely war strategy enthusiasts in their basements filled with historically accurate pewter miniatures? Eugen systems is putting a stop to that misconception with the robust multiplayer mode in Wargame: European Escalation. The mode is just as extensive as the one you'd find in, say, Call of Duty, and has a number of exclusive features tailored to the war strategy genre. If you're a soccer fan in the US you're in something of a minority among sports fans, but it is well known that the rest of the world is positively mad for the game. For that reason, EA Sports is exploring the diversity of soccer in their upcoming FIFA Street. The developers have analyzed the many variations of soccer from professional and urban rulesets in a dozen countries, and that variety will be reflected in the huge list of game modes in FIFA Street. Check out the dev diary below for more detail.
Kickstarter and gaming came a long way few days ago when Double Fine went the crowd sourcing route in generating funds for one of their next games. How successful was Double Fine in garnering some capital to create their next game? Try $1 million in a day and counting. That's absolutely incredible..

Double Fine is using this tactic to create a brand new click and point adventure game. It's a genre that hasn't been really popular in the mainstream for a while, but here's the thing. If Double Fine went to a major publisher saying they wanted to do an old school style game, do you think they would be all in? Of course, the publisher would have a lot of reservations handing over money on something like that. Even to a very reputable development company, publishers want as much of a sure thing as possible in this day an age to recoup costs, turn a high profit, and pay shareholders.

So, Double Fine went with a new tactic to generate funds and it's become a smashing success. They initially wanted $400,000 in 30+ days. They shattered that mark in 24 hours.

Double Fine has shown that they have enough fans that believe in their venture to give them a few dollars here and there. This got me thinking on two fronts. Could Kickstarter be the next generation way to fund and purchase games and could Kickstarter also be a conduit in bringing back IPs that are beloved but have long been forgotten by the publishers?

Let's be honest, you're going to have to be a very reputable company to be able to get the funds like Double Fine has to make a new game. No one's going to hand over any money without knowing the company behind it or seeing a very polished demo of the product. That's not to say some new company couldn't go this route to try and get funds for their game. But unless you're a well known individual or development company, success stories like Double Fine's won't come easy. Still, I'd love to see companies old or new churn out new and interesting IPs with Kickstarter. We need more new and fun IPs rather than rehashes and sequels that seem to dominate the market. Kickstarter can be that way to start it all and it would be really great to see an IP hit it big starting out as a Kickstarter project from a larger studio.

Now, how about those IPs that you would love to see another installment of? For example, THQ and Volition has said they just don't see a market for another Freespace game even though fans have been clamoring for it. What if Volition did a Kickstarter project trying to fund a Freespace 3? If they went the independent route, they wouldn't have to need as much money to pay for overhead and release the title on Steam like Double Fine is. Don't you think they'd get enough capital to produce a solid sequel?

Think of all the old IPs that have a huge following, but won't get the funding from publishers because they think the risk is too great. How many great titles from the past would be brought back to life this way? Who knows until someone tries and Double Fine's experiment shows there's a market for crowd sourcing games and this could be a great way for a company to bring back a beloved IP without incurring as great of a risk.

With Kickstarter, we could be seeing the start of a new way for companies to fund gaming development. Yes, there are a lot of independent projects out there now, but bigger and bigger development companies could find this as a method to create new IPs when publishers balk at their suggestion. It could also lead to a resurrection of old IPs as well. I do hope Double Fine succeeds with their project and show to others that this is a viable way to go when developing games. If it does happen, let it be known that Double Fine was the company to be one to pull in larger studios in.
Maybe there is a reason to own a Nintendo 3DS as Capcom’s Resident Evil: Revelations is now available in stores. The game, which is an entirely new chapter in the Resident Evil franchise, takes gamers back to the period of time between Resident Evil 4 and 5. Series staples Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are back and leading up a new unit known as the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. AS with most entires in the series, the game is story heavy and we don’t want to ruin anything for you, so we won’t say much more.

In the mean time, check out the launch trailer for the game below and expect to see Russell’s review of the game very soon!

If you're and old school gamer you remember classic Schafer and Gilbert adventure games like Maniac Mansion and Grim Fandango. While these games were popular back in the late 80's and early 90's, they are also the kind of games that are not going to get funded or published in the current risk averse game industry despite a lot of pent up demand for the games.

Well the folks at Double Fine have announced that they want to do another one and to do so they are turning to the general population to fund the game via a Kickstarter campaign. Their goal is to raise $400,000 over the next 33 days to fund the development of the game. Depending on the funding level you'll can get everything from frame able posters to lunch with Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert and a tour of the Double Fine offices. As of 10:20 they've already raised around $61,000 and the campaign is just a few hours old.

We've seen Kickstarters for other games in the past and I'm interested to see how this one does. Again, I've already got some skin in the game but I'm hoping it's a success as it will help get this and other innovative games developed without developers having to sell their souls to a major publisher.

Third content drop for Modern Warfare 3 hits Xbox 360 gamers on February 21st

by: Russell Archey
NEWS - Can't wait for the third content drop in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? If you're a Premium Member on Xbox Live, it will be arriving in just a couple weeks on February 21st. The next content drop, titled Overwatch, will drop gamers into a construction site atop a New York City skyscraper. According to the press release, "the battle will take place along two levels in a near symmetrical layout, with the central bridge and side routes open to attack from multiple angles".

We all know about day one dlc, but day -27 dlc is just silly

by: Nathaniel Cohen
NEWS - Over at joystiq.com, a funny little picture was posted showing a receipt for a code to activate "Mass Effect 3 FromDust DLC"
We can get you there!

by: Jeremy Duff
NEWS - The free-to-play market is growing by leaps and bounds; the options in the F2P market are getting better and better with each passing month. One of the F2P titles coming later this year happens to be Neowiz’s Seven Souls Online. If you haven’t checked out the title before now, this is your perfect chance.

Seven Souls Online is a F2P MMORPG set in the martial arts / samurai universe. Don’t let the MMORPG moniker fool you, the name of the game here is action. The Seals of the Seven Souls are scattered across the world, across numerous continents. Combined they possess a destructive force that holds the power to destroy the world, but the Earth’s Guardians have sealed them away. It is the job of the Guardians and their lineage to ensure that the Seals remain hidden from the world, but it was foretold that a day would come when the Seals would be revealed and their power unleashed. That time has come.

Neowiz is ready to launch the closed beta portion of the game next week, on February 15, 2012. They are currently accepting sign ups for a chance to get into the closed beta program on the game’s official website. Of course, signing up through the page only gives you a chance at being included in the program, we can actually get you in it! Getting in is pretty simple; all that you have to do is give @GamingNexus a shoutout on Twitter and include the hashtag #7Souls. I will be watching out for entries daily and will send all entries an exclusive access code which you can include in your entry form for the beta program on the site that will guarantees you a spot in the beta when it launches next week.

If and when you receive a beta code through Twitter, simply head over to this website, register for a Seven Souls Online account, and click on “APPLY FOR BETA” to redeem your key.
Mass Effect: Infiltrator (Just check out the screen shots below - wow, don't you agree?) follows the exploits of some, as yet unknown, infiltrator whose task is the free prisoners from and collect evidence on Cerberus, the morally dark-gray (like really super dark gray) human supremacist organization responsible for Shepard's resurrection in Mass Effect 2. The third person shooter will naturally feature powers and weapons from the series.

The second, called Mass Effect: Datapad looks more like an app than a game. It will allow players to keep track of their galactic readiness and fight Reapers on the go. Galactic readiness is the component of Mass Effect 3 that tracks the player's current ability to fight off the Reaper invasion once and for all.

No word yet on when they're set to be released, but it must be soon since the 3/6/12 release date for Mass Effect 3 is approaching at FTL speeds.
The most obvious is the inclusion of Pat Cash and John McEnroe as match commentators, but also Grand Slam Tennis 2 will feature "exclusive ESPN Grand Slam Classics mode." This mode lets you relive some of the greatest matches in history. If you wan't to know what some of those greatest matches ever are, you'll just have to watch the video.

Grand Slam Tennis 2 lands on store shelves on February 14, so hopefully you're dating a professional tennis player (and if you are, well done.)

It's a simple game that's been upgraded a few times with electronics and whatnot.

A movie is coming out this Summer with Liam Neeson taking that concept, kinda, to the big screen. Yes, there are battleships but the fleet is going up against what looks like an alien naval force. Odd, yes, but who knows. It might work.

Now, Activision and Double Helix is bringing a game inspired by the movie to the consoles, but with a twist. You see, they're going for both the tactical aspect of the game we know and love and combine it with a first person shooter aspect.

What?

Yeah, they're going to XCOM it and put in first person shooting to a turn based strategy game. Now, they're going to keep some of the core components of the original, but it sounds like you'll be flipping back and forth between the views. The game arrives in Europe in April and North America in May for the PS3 and Xbox 360 so not too far off from now. Unique versions of the game will be coming to the Wii, 3DS, and DS as well.
You saw how the folks in Japan were able register their UMDs and grab them on the Vita for a price. Well, that UMD Passport program isn't coming to North America unfortunately.

Kotaku got word from Sony that the the UMD Passport program isn't an option so you're going to be out of luck trying to register old UMDs to your account. No word as to why they won't be doing it, they just won't.

Now, I'd like to know if this affects any folks looking to pick up the Vita in a few weeks. Does it bother you? Does it matter? I would've liked to have seen the program migrated to other regions, so let's hope Sony changes their mind.
