Could Kickstarter be the new way to fund old and new games?

by: John - - Add a Comment
Kickstarter and gaming came a long way few days ago when Double Fine went the crowd sourcing route in generating funds for one of their next games. How successful was Double Fine in garnering some capital to create their next game? Try $1 million in a day and counting. That's absolutely incredible..

Double Fine is using this tactic to create a brand new click and point adventure game. It's a genre that hasn't been really popular in the mainstream for a while, but here's the thing. If Double Fine went to a major publisher saying they wanted to do an old school style game, do you think they would be all in? Of course, the publisher would have a lot of reservations handing over money on something like that. Even to a very reputable development company, publishers want as much of a sure thing as possible in this day an age to recoup costs, turn a high profit, and pay shareholders.

So, Double Fine went with a new tactic to generate funds and it's become a smashing success. They initially wanted $400,000 in 30+ days. They shattered that mark in 24 hours.

Double Fine has shown that they have enough fans that believe in their venture to give them a few dollars here and there. This got me thinking on two fronts. Could Kickstarter be the next generation way to fund and purchase games and could Kickstarter also be a conduit in bringing back IPs that are beloved but have long been forgotten by the publishers?

Let's be honest, you're going to have to be a very reputable company to be able to get the funds like Double Fine has to make a new game. No one's going to hand over any money without knowing the company behind it or seeing a very polished demo of the product. That's not to say some new company couldn't go this route to try and get funds for their game. But unless you're a well known individual or development company, success stories like Double Fine's won't come easy. Still, I'd love to see companies old or new churn out new and interesting IPs with Kickstarter. We need more new and fun IPs rather than rehashes and sequels that seem to dominate the market. Kickstarter can be that way to start it all and it would be really great to see an IP hit it big starting out as a Kickstarter project from a larger studio.

Now, how about those IPs that you would love to see another installment of? For example, THQ and Volition has said they just don't see a market for another Freespace game even though fans have been clamoring for it. What if Volition did a Kickstarter project trying to fund a Freespace 3? If they went the independent route, they wouldn't have to need as much money to pay for overhead and release the title on Steam like Double Fine is. Don't you think they'd get enough capital to produce a solid sequel?

Think of all the old IPs that have a huge following, but won't get the funding from publishers because they think the risk is too great. How many great titles from the past would be brought back to life this way? Who knows until someone tries and Double Fine's experiment shows there's a market for crowd sourcing games and this could be a great way for a company to bring back a beloved IP without incurring as great of a risk.

With Kickstarter, we could be seeing the start of a new way for companies to fund gaming development. Yes, there are a lot of independent projects out there now, but bigger and bigger development companies could find this as a method to create new IPs when publishers balk at their suggestion. It could also lead to a resurrection of old IPs as well. I do hope Double Fine succeeds with their project and show to others that this is a viable way to go when developing games. If it does happen, let it be known that Double Fine was the company to be one to pull in larger studios in.

Can't wait for the third content drop in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?  If you're a Premium Member on Xbox Live, it will be arriving in just a couple weeks on February 21st.  The next content drop, titled Overwatch, will drop gamers into a construction site atop a New York City skyscraper.  According to the press release, "the battle will take place along two levels in a near symmetrical layout, with the central bridge and side routes open to attack from multiple angles".

You've sunk my Battleship, in first person

by: John - - Add a Comment
Everyone knows the game Battleship where you shout out letters and numbers in hopes of landing a hit on the other player's gameboard where he's placed battleships of various sizes in various directions. It's a simple game that's been upgraded a few times with electronics and whatnot.

A movie is coming out this Summer with Liam Neeson taking that concept, kinda, to the big screen. Yes, there are battleships but the fleet is going up against what looks like an alien naval force. Odd, yes, but who knows. It might work.

Now, Activision and Double Helix is bringing a game inspired by the movie to the consoles, but with a twist. You see, they're going for both the tactical aspect of the game we know and love and combine it with a first person shooter aspect.

What?

Yeah, they're going to XCOM it and put in first person shooting to a turn based strategy game. Now, they're going to keep some of the core components of the original, but it sounds like you'll be flipping back and forth between the views. The game arrives in Europe in April and North America in May for the PS3 and Xbox 360 so not too far off from now. Unique versions of the game will be coming to the Wii, 3DS, and DS as well.

Next game in the Skylanders franchise has been announced

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
Fans of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure might be happy to know that a new game is on the horizon.  Skylanders Giants will introduce eight new figures that are more than twice the size of the main cast, both physically and virtually, and their in-game powers and abilities will reflect their size.  Skylanders Giants will also include a set of characters that feature new light technology integrated into the toys, which will allow the figure to light up when near or on the Portal of Power, and also have additional in-game benefits.

But what if you invested a lot of money into the figures you have now?  Not looking forward to buying even more figures?  Well, of course you might want to pick up a couple new figures to try them out, but the game is also forward compatible with the older figures.  Every character from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is 100% compatible with Skylanders Giants, keeping their leveled-up stats and customizations intact.

Skylanders Giants is looking to be released this fall, but I haven't seen which platforms it'll be on.  If I had to guess, I'd say at least the platforms Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure was released on, which was, the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and 3DS.

Modern Warfare 3 DLC season kicks off on PS3 2/28/12

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
It has been a long wait for fans of the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 3 when it comes to getting a hold of the game’s DLC, but that wait is almost over. Activision has announced that the Content Season for Elite Premium Members will kick off (finally) at the end of this month.

On February 28, the first 2 DLC packs of the content season will be released, consisting of the Liberation and Piazza maps. Remember, these items are available at no additional cost to Elite Premium members, while everyone else will have to wait even longer and pay for the maps individually. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 fans are anxiously awaiting news on the next DLC drop, as they have been playing on these maps for a few weeks.

Better late than never I guess...

Oooooo Yeaaaah... Macho Man is now available on WWE '12

by: John - - Add a Comment
Some new WWE Superstars are available for your wrestling pleasure for WWE '12. The late, great "Macho Man" Randy Savage. One of the biggest names in wrestling in the 90s, Randy Savage was known to plan great matches months in advance, such as the infamous match with Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania III.

Mick Foley recently came back to the WWE from TNA and he's now available for WWE '12. If you missed it, he was also on Celebrity Wife Swap just recently. Another recently returning wrestler, well not that recent, is Kane with his brand new mask. He's available now as well for free. I've always enjoyed Kane more with the mask on than off so I'm glad to see he's going back to that.

Batista, two time WWE Champion and four time World Heavyweight Champion also makes the list as a purchasable character for the game. Formerly known as Leviathan in Ohio Valley Wrestling, Batista has been out of the wrestling spotlight since May of 2010.

Finally, one of Jeremy's new favorite wrestlers, Brodus Clay makes his WWE video game debut and you know, since he's so popular with the fans, he's free! Too bad he's not being given with his latest gimmick though. I mean who doesn't love a wrestler with an entrance like this. He's the Funkasaurus! Make it happen in a new update THQ.

Somebody call my momma!

New Skylanders characters hit stores

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
If you're looking to pick up some new characters for Skylanders, you can now pick up Cynder and Double Trouble, along with a new adventure pack called Empire of Ice (which also comes with Slam Bam).  Cynder is a dragon of the undead element, while Double Trouble, once an adept spellcaster, is from the magic element.  Finally, Slam Bam is a "yeti-abominable-snowman-looking guy" and if of the water element.  I saw these at work earlier today and they looked pretty nice.  Not sure if the adventure packs work on the 3DS version though, so I may have to look into that.

2 fancy Xbox 360 consoles see price drops

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Earlier today, Major Nelson tweeted some news that might just excite some people, what with tax season upon us.  The limited edition Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 console and the limited edition Gears of War 3 console have both received price drops and are now a cool $349.  It's not exactly chump change, sure, but many of use will see income tax refunds in the coming weeks or months, and spending it on frivolous items sure won't hurt the economy.

Call your bookies, Madden 12 says Giants win SB by 3 points

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
I love football, and I love gaming, but I've always thought the yearly Madden simulation were silly.  I remember the first time I saw it.  It was a mid-90's Superbowl broadcast on Fox.  Now, I don't know if that prediction was correct, but I do remember thinking it was awesome to see something as big as Fox's Superbowl pre-game show lending credibility to something that was still mainly considered a toy.  However, the next thing I thought was how it just confirmed my belief that Fox's coverage of football sucked.  Instead of strategy and Xs and Os, they were giving us a completely unreliable prediction based on a game that could barely get the things that are important in winning a football game correct.

Despite that, I'd say this years Madden NFL 12 prediction of a 27-24 Giants victory on a last second field goal looks pretty solid.  A simple glance at the last five predictions show that they have gotten the winner right every year, with the actual scores - that are much harder to predict - being fairly on the mark.  So call your bookies, this one's a sure thing.*
  • Super Bowl XXXVIII – Patriots 23, Panthers 20
    • Actual Score: Patriots 32, Panthers 29
  • Super Bowl XXXIX – Patriots 47, Eagles 31
    • Actual score: Patriots 24, Eagles 21
  • Super Bowl XL – Steelers 24, Seahawks 19
    • Actual score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10
  • Super Bowl XLI – Colts 38, Bears 27
    • Actual score: Colts 29, Bears 17
  • Super Bowl XLIII – Steelers 28, Cardinals 24
    • Actual score: Steelers 27, Cardinals 23
  • Super Bowl XLIV – Saints 35, Colts 31
    • Actual score: Saints 31, Colts 17

Elite content drops begin for Modern Warfare 3

by: Travis - - Add a Comment
Activision has announced the arrival of incoming maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which will mark the beginning to the season of downloadable content drops. In the first set of content drops, gamers will find two new multiplayer maps titled Liberation and Piazza. These maps mark the first two of twenty content drops over the next nine months that will be exclusive to Call of Duty Elite premium members until March. Xbox 360 owners will be able to download the content first, while other platforms will have to wait until an unspecified date. Details from the developers concerning the new maps can be found below:
  • Call of Duty Elite Drop 1: Liberation, a militarized Central Park in the heart of NYC, featuring a vast landscape ripe for long-range sniper and LMG kills. Mounted turrets on opposing ends of the map offer overwhelming firepower to anyone brave enough to man them.
  • Elite Drop 2: Piazza, set in an idyllic seaside village, Italian getaway gone rogue, where blind corners and a complex network of branching pathways pose danger at every turn. Visceral close-quarters combat dominates in Piazza, and attacks from above and below are an ever-constant threat.
