Now Loading for the week of April 29, 2013: Give and Take Edition

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
The moral of this week’s batch of releases is that you have to give a little something in order to get something in return. Obviously, I am referring to the release of Inafune and Marvelous AQL’s masterpiece Soul Sacrifice. I can’t really such much more about the game until the review goes live tomorrow morning, but that should give you some idea of my thoughts on the project.

Two titles are getting our spotlight this week:

Deadly Premonition- The Director’s Cut: ToyBox Inc.’s update to the cult classic Deadly Premonition exclusively on the PlayStation 3.  This is a non-linear, open-world experience set in the town of Greenvale where you are charged with investigating the murder of a young woman. As you delve deeper into your investigation, more women will turn up dead, proving that this is more than just a random incident. The Director’s Cut version of the psychological survival horror video game will feature updated controls, Stereoscopic 3D support, updated HD visuals, full PlayStation Move support, and a variety of new downloadable content. Matt was very happy with what he saw during his preview of the game back in January and has nothing but high hopes for the final, retail release.

Soul Sacrifice: The Vita owns this week’s marquee title with Marvelous AQL’s Soul Sacrifice. Think Monster Hunter meets Devil May Cry but presented in a very unique manner, as I explained in my preview last week. The game is narrated by a book which tells you the tale of a sorcerer from an ancient guild charged with ridding the world of monsters. As you read through his tales, learning of the life that eventually drove him mad, you will get to live out his various experiences and quests in flashback form. As you dive deeper into the world within this devilish book, you will set out on a series of missions, ridding the world of devilish creatures both alone and with friends but the action is non-stop and fast paced. The core mechanic of the game is that you have to give something to get something, hence the use of the word “sacrifice” in the title. Players can sacrifice items and parts of their character’s body in exchange for power; the only thing is, these sacrifices are permanent therefor they aren’t a resource that you can endlessly tap into. This is a very deep and dark game, definitely not one for the kiddies.

This week’s full lineup consists of the following:

Is this new art for Rainbow Six Patriots?

by: John - - Add a Comment
Remember that Rainbow Six game that got a lot of buzz? Rainbow Six: Patriots had a pretty interesting demo shown a few years ago, but the last we heard the team had some turnover and not much else has come out since.

Well, browsing through Neogaf, a few images seemed to have popped up to remind us, yes the game's still being developed. With E3 being a a month and some change away, it would be a great time to show off what they have done since the changing of the guard.

I've reached out to Ubisoft to see if they have any comments on the new images.

Lobo, coming to Injustice: Gods Among Us May, 7th

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
Injustice: Gods Among Us has only been out for a few weeks but a new character will be joining the cast on May 7th and we have a trailer for you below.

His official move list hasnt been announced yet but we can get an idea about his special moves from the new trailer. It appears he has a low shotgun blast, a mid shotgun blast, a grappling hook that acts like Scorpions spear from Mortal Kombat, an anti air grapple hook, a pop up grapple, and it looks like his power move may be the ability to load his shotgun with bullets which can be used for additional damage. This is all just speculation though. We will find out everything when he is released.

No price has been announced yet but you can buy the seasons pass for Injustice for $14.99 and get the character along with three others as they are released for a discount.

Now Playing: Battle Kid Citadel Edition

John is throwing Kickstarter money at gaming treadmills, SimCity’s 2.0 patch fixed some bugs and introduced some more bugs, and PA Report says Skyrim is utterly unplayable on the Oculus Rift VR headset because menus.

What are you playing this weekend?

Thinking of going a little 8-bit new school this weekend by trying to finish Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment on the NES. I did a couple live streams back around Christmas and should be towards the end of the game. I'm hoping this Saturday I can sit down and finish it up, or at least come close.

Sean Cahill | staff writer | Twitter @seancahill2
A mixture of BioShock Infinite and playing Sacred Citadel with Jeremy.

Nathan Carter | staff writer | Twitter @natedoggcata
This weekend I will be getting some more practice in with Injustice: Gods Among Us. I have a respectable record online using Green Arrow and Harley Quinn, and even though I’ve beaten the story mode I have only scratched the surface in terms of learning new characters, the STAR Labs, and beating the various battle modes in the game. I also got Dead Island: Riptide from Gamefly so I’ll be working my way through that. Finally I’ll be spending hours with Fire Pro Wrestling Returns which was added as a PS2 Classic on PSN this week. This is, in my opinion, the greatest wrestling game ever made, and it is so much fun.

Nathaniel Cohen | staff writer | Twitter @seven_hells
Now that I've destroyed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (so awesome, BTW, that simply writing the review made my PC beg for mercy), I have an incredible urge to go back to vanilla Far Cry 3.  Also, Dishonored: Knife of Dunwall, and hopefully I'll have some time to play Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch that's not going to be used up by PS3 firmware updates.

Sean Colleli | staff writer
It's official: I'm completely addicted to Far Cry 3. I'm kicking myself for not getting it last year when it came out, but then again this might work out in the end. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon comes out in less than a week, it looks hilarious and amazing and I can't wait to play it, so beating its parent game so close to its release is a good primer.

Jeremy Duff | senior staff writer | Twitter @duff3c
After spending a solid week under mask and cape in the world of Injustice, I need to expand my horizons a bit this week and head into the worlds of Sacred Citadel and Soul Sacrifice. Then again, I know that the duties of superhero-dom will likely call me back to the world of Injustice at some point.

Randy Kalista | staff writer | Twitter @randykalista
The wife and kid are out of the house this weekend, which means I'm ordering #BoneIn buffalo wings from my Xbox's Pizza Hut app, setting a timer for four hours, then ordering some more. Then setting a timer for four hours. Meanwhile, John is pointing and laughing at me for downloading EVE Online again. EVE wasn't my first MMO romance, but she is definitely my one true love. Latest GRID 2 trailer showcases multiplayer features and new locations

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
While challenging the CPU can be fun, one of the best parts of any racing game (at least in my opinion) is the multiplayer, whether it's local or online.  GRID 2's latest trailer not only shows a couple new locations, but also showcases a few multiplayer features, such as rivalries and video uploading.  The video uploading isn't anything new, it's been done in games before and is pretty straight forward.  With the rivalries feature, players can request to become other players's rivals.  Beating a rival can earn you more followers.  The video also show a bit of the livery editor that gives you endless possibilities for designing your car.  For those who can't wait to check out these new features, you don't have long to wait as GRID 2 will be released on May 28th.

Ride to Hell: Route 666 announcement trailer

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Ride to Hell: Route 666 is the downloadable game with a "sports game-like" approach to combat that I told you about earlier this month when the news that Ride to Hell was still a thing and getting three separate games in the coming months.  Deep Silver has released what they're calling an "announcement" trailer despite the fact that Ride to Hell: Route 666 has already been announced.  But whatever, I don't know how or why things are called what they're called.  I do know that this trailer, showing off Ride to Hell: Route 666's vaguely cell-shaded visual style, looks a spot more interesting than the trailer for the other Ride to Hell game.  No judgment.

Ride to Hell: Route 666 is set for release this summer and will be available on Xbox Live, the PSN, and Steam.  To learn more, follow the jump.

Mars War Logs gets a proper launch trailer

by: Chuck - - Add a Comment
Spiders Studios new  Action RPG game Mars War Logs is finally available for download on Steam and they have released a launch trailer which gives you a flavor for what's in the game.  It does feel a bit like an extended cut of the first trailer the company launched late last year but it's still good stuff.

To be honest a better trailer to watch might be this one which provides a full overview of the game as well as some actual game play footage.  We'll have our review in a bit but you might want to check out our interview with the CEO of Spider Studio if you want more information on the game now.

XCOM becomes Declassified

by: John - - Add a Comment
You know that XCOM FPS that pretty much no one liked except for a few here and there? It's been a long time since we heard anything about that game and XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been such a great success that I think many folks forgot about it, Well, it's going to finally be released this August 20th as The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and it's not an FPS anymore.

2K Marin is taking it and making it a third person squad based game set in the 60s. As a member of the Bureau, you're going to be trying to defend Earth against these alien invasions while keeping the American public in the dark about their existence. Yes, like past XCOM games, you'll have squad mates that can permanently die, so I wouldn't get too attached to them.

The Bureau is going to launch on the PC, 360, and PS3, but no word yet on next generation consoles as they said they are concentrating on the current generation for now. Let's hope this long wait is worth it.

Bethesda may be "done" with Skyrim, but not before giving us a legendary edition

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
Still haven't picked up Skyrim yet?  What are you waiting for, a bundle that includes all three expansions?  Well...you're in luck. While it was reported a while back that Bethesda was "done" with Skyrim, there was something still missing: a Game of the Year Edition.  That's just what Bethesda is giving us...only they're calling it the Legendary Edition.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition will include the base game, all three add-ons (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn), and some added features such as combat cameras, mounted combat, and a legendary difficulty, as well as Legendary skills so you can master every perk.

Orc Attack gets a trailer, box art, and some new info

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
If there's anything that most (if not all) fantasy or RPG games have, it's orcs.  Since the days of Dungeons & Dragons and all throughout the years, orcs seem to be everywhere...okay, not really, but I'm pretty sure we're all familiar with what an orc is by now.  However, you're typically the one fighting against the orcs as opposed to being the orcs (with a few exceptions here and there).

In Orc Attack though, you play as the orcs in a battle against the humans.  Orcs have become victims of a brutal human expansion as they (the humans that is) have poisoned the environment.  In either single-player or up to four-player co-op, you must take the fight to the humans in a...shall we say, unique gaseous ability.  The orcs take the fight to the humans later this year on PC, PSN, and XBLA.

Call Of Duty Uprising DLC pack dated for PS3 and PC

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
Being a PS3 or PC player of the Call Of Duty games is kind of a bummer when it comes to downloadable content but its not the end of the world. At least Xbox doesnt get exclusive content while PS3 and PC get nothing. In any case we have a date now for the second DLC map pack for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 for PS3 and PC.

The second DLC Map Pack "Uprising" will be available on PS3 and PC on May 16th and includes five new multiplayer maps and a new map for Zombies mode.

The maps are
  • Magma – Set within a modern Japanese village, volcanic eruptions carve multiple paths throughout the town.
  • Encore – Taking place in the aftermath of a deserted London music festival, Encore leaves numerous opportunities for run-and-gun, close quarters combat.
  • Vertigo – A futuristic high-rise mega-structure located in India featuring dizzying vistas and multi-tiered pathways.
  • Studio – A contemporary re-imagining of “Firing Range,” the fan-favorite multiplayer map from the original Call of Duty: Black Ops.  “Studio” is a Hollywood movie back lot with a variety of cinematic themes that range from Sci-Fi to the Old West.

The map pack also includes "Mob Of The Dead" where players are put inside Alcatraz and get to play as one of four prohibition-era mobsters played by Ray Liotta, Chazz Palminteri, Michael Madsen and Joe Pantoliano.

The map pack will be free if you bought the seasons pass or $14.99 for the standalone pack.

Barry Sanders wins Madden 25 Cover Vote

by: Sean Cahill - - Add a Comment
The votes have finally been tallied, and last night on Sportsnation, it was revealed that Hall of Fame running back, Barry Sanders, has won the cover vote and will grace the cover of the upcoming release of Madden 25.  The vote came down to Sanders and current Minnesota Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson.  The entire voting process covered over 40 million votes and Sanders eventually stood triumphant, garnering 58% of the final vote over Peterson.  Madden 25 playbooks are scheduled to be released leading up to the launch of the title, but for now, enjoy the cover and information about the latest title in the long running sports franchise. Dark gets five new screenshots

by: Chuck - - Add a Comment
The best way to describe Kalypso's Dark is that it's a Splinter Cell game where Sam Fisher is a vampire.  A real vampire and not one of those sparkly vampires from the Twilight movies or one of the angsty and overly dramatic vampires from True Blood.  No this is one of the old school vampires like out of Blade.

Back to the point, there are five new screenshots from the game which you can see below that show off Eric Bane, the protagonist of the story and a few other characters from the game.  Be sure to check out my interview with the producer of the game or Sean's hands on preview if you want more information on the game.

Metro Last Light has gone Gold

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
Deep Silver would like to remind everyone that their anticipated shooter followup, Metro Last Light, has gone gold. It should be on store shelves (and Steam) on May 14th here in the States and the 17th in Europe. It's not too late to get those pre-orders in to secure the expert difficulty Ranger Mode. Personally I think it's a little chincy to make your customers pre-order just to get expert mode--Bioshock Infinite let us unlock 1999 difficulty with the Konami code, after all.

I started playing the original Metro 2033 about a year ago and while I loved the atmosphere I had to put it down. I might get back to it someday but I have to hand it to Deep Silver--very few games have such an oppressing sense of bleakness that they legitimately make me seriously depressed. The game was fun and a beautifully orchestrated environment of pure hopelessness, but after a few hours in the metro I had to go outside and walk around in the sunshine. [READ MORE]

Michaelangelo spotlighted in TMNT: Out of the Shadows

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
I practically grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so recent events in the TMNT world have been particularly depressing for me. Michael Bay seems determined to ruin another iconic 80s property with his ill-begotten movie reboot, and the new TMNT animated series looks to be catering to five year olds and nobody else. Hey, at least the game looks pretty sweet!

This first character spotlight for TMNT: Out of the Shadows focuses on Michaelangelo. Mikey may be the party dude of the team but he can still crack some skulls with his nunchaku, and in style too. Apparently he's the fastest of the turtles but has the lowest overall damage per hit. Hmm, sounds like another nunchuk-wielding fighter.

The Loot Train has no Brakes in the Poker Night 2 Launch Trailer

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
I'm still amazed that Telltale Games can wrangle all the IP copyright issues together to make the Poker Night series. Poker Night 2 is now available with such disparate nerd icons as Sam and Max, Brock Samson, Ash Williams and Claptrap, with Portal's GLaDOS as dealer. This time the game gives you loot for Borderlands 2, Team Fortress 2 and even those lame sell-out XBLA avatars. It's like Telltale is turning Steam into some kind of intellectual property hippie commune, except with capitalism.

Nintendo will not have an E3 press conference this year

by: John - - Add a Comment
Nintendo has announced they are forgoing the E3 press conference this year, instead holding smaller events at the show. Nintendo's press conference typically runs right before the start of the first day of E3 at the Nokia Theater, but this will be the first year in a while (maybe ever?) that they won't be doing something before the convention.

It's funny that they mentioned this today as I was talking to a few of my colleagues and mentioning that I'm skipping out on this year's Nintendo press conference as I would like to take care of other things and I never did get much out it. They've announced products that never show (Vitality Sensor anyone?) and some of their games were shown using competitor's consoles (Wii U graphics in third party games). They've been using the Nintendo Direct events to announce their new products, which is nice in some aspects.

Now, it will just be Sony's press conference that will be held before the show as Microsoft's usually a day before. I don't know what kind of presence they'll have in on the convention floor itself, but it will be weird to not have one of the big three produce some kind of press conference for the event.

27 Days until the new Xbox reveal…and Microsoft wants you watching

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Looks like Microsoft is working on drumming up some interest in the impending reveal of the new Xbox, codename Durango.  Those of us with an Xbox Live account probably all received the same teaser e-mail today about the big reveal on May 21st.  If not, the details are pretty straight forward.  On May 21st (which is a Tuesday) at 10:00 a.m. PST (1:00 p.m. EST), Microsoft will reveal details on the new Xbox to the world.   They are touting it as “A New Generation Revealed” and will be broadcasting the event live on both Xbox Live or Xbox.com.  If you can’t catch it live because you have to , you know, work or something, then you can follow the hash tag #XboxReveal on Twitter for all the giddiness.

Although the teaser e-mail is nondescript, it made me wonder what we will be seeing based on what is not included in it.  Specifically, the graphics are 100% current gen Xbox 360, with the existing Nexus symbol, Xbox font and Xbox 360 green bordering it.  So Microsoft isn’t tipping their hand on if there is any sort of redesign (likely) on the new Xbox logo or color scheme associated with the brand.

Blops 2 "Mob of the Dead" soundtrack release

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Mob of the Dead is the new Zombies gamemode for Blops 2 and features four Prohibition-era mobsters: Billy Handsome, Al "The Weasel" Arlington, Salvatore "Sal" DeLuca, and Michael "Finn" O'Leary.  Their time on Alcatraz is interrupted by a zombie invasion and they have to work together to survive.  Mob of the Dead is part of the Uprising map pack, and if you own it, have played it, and love the music, then you should pick up the soundtrack.

It's available right now on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Google Play, and more thanks to BFM Digital.  It's 24 original tracks composed by Treyarch and includes bonus tracks from Tranzit and Die Rise.
