Sinestro and Hawkgirl ready for battle in Injustice

by: John - - Add a Comment
Well, at least we're branching out from the Batman territory here. It seemed like a lot of the characters in Injustice: Gods Among Us were coming from Bruce Wayne's side of things. Not today.

Hawkgirl and Sinestro has been announced as the next round of reveal of characters for Injustice. Sinestro is the head of the Yellow Lanterns and the nemesis of the Green Lantern, of course. While the Thanagarian princess, Hawkgirl, makes her fifth appearance in a video game.

Hawkgirl seems like a good choice and I'd probably rather have her in it than Hawkman. She really was one of the better characters in the Justice League Unlimited series. Sinestro I can take or leave. He was never one that really popped out for me. But, glad to see these two included in the game, which I can't really wait for after reading the comic prequel.

It’s official: WWE 2K14 coming this Fall

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
It was widely known that the WWE brand was headed to 2K after the complete disbursal of all of THQ’s assets a few weeks back, but now it has been written in stone. 2K and the WWE have announced that the two entities have entered into a multi-year licensing deal that will place Yuke’s beloved series under the 2K banner.

The game will continue to be developed by Yuke’s in Japan and 2K will ensure that the titles receive the same polish and authenticity that all of its sport franchises are known for. The first entry in the new partnership has been announced as coming this Fall for multiple platforms in the form of WWE 2K14. Hopefully more on this new chapter of the series will be shown at E3 in just a few short months. As a longtime fan of the series, I have some seriously high hopes for its future... I have all oft he faith in the world in 2K and think they will do right by the series.

What We're Playing This Weekend for 2/22/2013

I'll probably be trying to finish up Skyrim, or at least getting to the final act. Last time I played the game crashed to the desktop four minutes after I did a quick save. Provided it plays nice, I'll probably give it some major attention this weekend.

SEAN CAHILL, staff writer, Twitter @seancahill2
My gaming has been locked up by FIFA Soccer 13 and Far Cry 3, lately. I find myself continuing to play online with Ultimate Team in FIFA, while Far Cry tortures me time and time again with various wild animals while I'm attempting to complete a goal. Frustrating, but it makes it far more challenging.

NATHAN CARTER, staff writer, Twitter @natedoggcata
Probably more Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC. The steam workshop is such a great thing. I am having so much fun downloading tons of new and unique campaigns, character skins, weapons and more. Hell I hate leaving the safe room cause I love listening to the Resident Evil save room soundtracks that I downloaded from the workshop as well. Other than that I might also hop in some Counter-Strike: Source to play some more Deathrun maps. Its like the TV Wipeout only...in CSS!

NATHANIEL COHEN, staff writer, Twitter @seven_hells
I finally got around to trying XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Lovin' it. I name all my soldiers after Game of Thrones characters. I'm also doing a "vertical playthrough" of the Dead Space trilogy. "Vertical playthrough" is what I call it when you take a trilogy of games and play one level/chapter/whatever of the first game, then do the same for the second, then do the same for the third, and then you start back with the first one and so on and so forth. Dead Space lends itself well to vertical playthroughs because it's got those clear chapter delineations. Doing so really paints the each games differences in stark relief.

JEREMY DUFF, senior staff writer, Twitter @duff3c
Assuming that I get some time to sink into some games for fun this weekend, I will likely spend a few more hours on the free-to-play Path of Exile, getting my loot gathering fix. Other than that, I really need to start Batman: Arkham City which has been collecting dust in my cabinet since it launched, and wrap up Uncharted 3 which has been half-finished for well over a year.

CHARLES HUSEMANN, editor in chief, Twitter @chusemann
Currently playing more Black Ops 2 PC multiplayer than I care to admit. Just too easy to drop in few a few quick rounds between chores around the house. Also playing a lot of MechWarrior Online and Temple Run 2. Need to scope some time to wrap up Dead Space 3 and get caught up with Halo 4's Spartan Ops.

RANDY KALISTA, staff writer, Twitter @randykalista
Is twelve months late too late to be fashionably late? That's where I'm at with Mass Effect 3. On the upside, I bought the Firefight Pack, Groundside Resistance Pack, and Alternate Appearance Pack 1. There's entirely too much game ahead of me to even consider the big single-player DLC stuff like Omega, Leviathan, From Ashes, or the recently teased Silversun Strip. But this is the pulpy kind of sci-fi I'm absolutely dying for right now.

MIKE MAHARDY, staff writer, Twitter @mmahardy
I'll be playing through Serious Sam DD XXL on XBLA cooperatively this weekend (it's very fun in all of the craziest, best ways) and also playing Metal Gear Rising insert really, really stupid noun here. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just as amazing as it has always been, and it's never a bad time to play FTL: Faster Than Light when I'm craving that strange feeling of helplessness combined with pure euphoria. God, I love FTL.

New Mass Effect 3 DLC announced

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Revealed today via blog.bioware.com, the final DLC packs for Mass Effect 3 have been announced (and yes, those random screens from last month were about this).  There are two of them, one singleplayer and one multiplayer.

The singleplayer DLC is called Mass Effect 3: Citadel and will see Commander Shepard halt a plot against himself from unknown forces and will take place on the Citadel, including previously unseen areas like the Council Archives, and the Silver Coast Casino (and yes, there will be gambling).  Squadmates will be drawn from Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 and includes Urdnot Wrex.

Once completed, you'll be able to hang out with all your old squadmates, rekindle old romances, and trick out your own living quarters on the Citadel.  It comes out on March 5th and will run $14.99/1200 MSP (and 1200 BW points, whatever they are).

The multiplayer DLC, called Mass Effect 3: Reckoning, is free, and will be out on February 26th (the 27th for PS3 in Europe).  It will feature new classes like the Geth Juggernaut, Cabal Vanguard, Talon Mercenary, Alliance Infiltration Unit, and the Krogan Warlord and his powerful Biotic Hammer.

You'll also get seven more weapons, like the Geth Spitfire assault rifle, Venom shotgun, Lancer assault rifle, and new mods like the Geth scanner, and assault rifle omni-blade.

Finally, on February 25th at 9:30am PST/6:30pm CET, Twitch TV will stream Mass Effect 3: Reckoning with Mass Effect devs on hand to show off the new content and answer your questions.

Amazing Spider Man wall-crawls onto Wii U March 5th

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
Despite some pretty harsh reaction from the hardcore sectors of comic nerddom, I actually liked last summer's Amazing Spider Man film reboot a lot. I also really enjoyed the tie-in game, even though it borrowed a lot of ideas from the Batman Arkham games. Now that game is coming to Wii U as the Ultimate Edition, which includes all previous DLC on disc and some new Wii U-specific features, like using Peter Parker's handy phone menu right on the GamePad screen. The game will also let you play in off-screen mode, a feature that I hope more Wii U games incorporate going forward.

Amazing Spider Man Ultimate Edition will release March 5th at the budget price of $39.99. [READ MORE]

Angry Birds Trilogy hits 1 million, coming to Wii and Wii U

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
Well, it was inevitable. Now that the re-released and HD-ified Angry Bird Trilogy has passed 1 million units sold, it's on its way to the Wii and Wii U sometime this year. Since the game was born on iOS I'm sure it's a perfect fit for the Wii U GamePad's touch screen, and like most freshly-released consoles the Wii U is hurting for new content right now. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

I don't think Angry Birds is a bad game, per se, I'm just already sick of the merchandising, the nakedly consumeristic Star Wars crossover, and most of all, how this rather mediocre physics-flinger sucks attention away from more creative, better made indie games that really need and deserve it. Ironically, Angry Birds reminds of of Wii Sports; a title we hoped would induct a whole new generation of gamers, but instead set the bar so damn low that the so-called new generation stayed there with it, oblivious to all the better, deeper games. Egh. I just hope history doesn't repeat itself on Wii U. [READ MORE]

Nintendo letting Luigi have his time in the sun!

Mario Mario Mario!  That's all we have been hearing from Nintendo as of late, so just recently they decided to declare this "The Year of Luigi!"  With four games coming this year, all either Starring or including our second favorite plumber its hard not feel proud for our boy in green!  Along with these four, Nintendo in their most recent Nintendo Direct video feed, has told us about more than than twenty games they have in their pipeline!  This may just be the boost to their sorely lacking games library (for the Wii-U) that they needed.  All we can do is wait and see!

The Skylanders franchise soars past the billion dollar mark

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
I seems like it wasn’t too long ago that Activion was boasting that the Skylanders franchise had hit the $500 million mark. Well that story is officially history as the franchise has just officially doubled that figure and hit the billion dollar mark in lifetime sales.

This amount doesn’t just count video game sales, but also the toy sales related to the figures and accessories that go along with it. To date this includes more than 100 million Skylanders toys; that is a lot of add-ons! This milestone comes hot on the heels of the announcement of a new entry in the series entitled Skylanders SWAP Force which is due out later this year. Who knows, we might me celebrating the 2 billion dollar mark this time next year!

More The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct pre-order info

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
The second half of The Walking Dead season 3 premiers on Sunday, and I know I speak for many people when I say that rarely does a show go from kinda crappy to mostly awesome as fast or as noticeably as The Walking Dead has.  But we're not here to talk about the show; we're here to talk about the game based on the show called, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

A few days ago, Jeremy told you about the Amazon pre-order exclusive called the Walker Execution Pack, and today we have the Gamestop exclusive pre-order bonus; it's called Herd Mode and it's exactly what it sounds like.  It's a wave-based mode basically similar to all the other wave-based game modes out there.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct come out on March 19.  In the meantime, here's an Official Gameplay Trailer to help tide you over.

NCAA Football 14 cover athletes revealed

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Maybe "winners" is too strong a word because right now all they've "won" is the right to represent their school on the cover should their school win the NCAA Football 14 cover vote.

The eight athletes and their respective schools are: Eddie Lacy (Alabama), E.J. Manuel (Florida State), Jarvis Jones (Georgia), Denard Robinson (Michigan), Tyler Eifert (Notre Dame), John Simon (Ohio State), Kenjon Barner (Oregon), Ryan Swope (Texas A&M).

There are now two ways to vote.  You can either "like" the image of the player or vote for your favorite school just like before.  You can do both of those as the NCAA Football Facebook page.  This round of voting will continue until February 18th.

Skylanders looking to mix it up, literally

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Activision has announced a new entry in the Skylanders franchise which will be revealed at the 2013 Toy Fair in New York City. Skylanders SWAP Force is headed to pretty much every console and platform that you can imagine later this year and will be shown off at the NYC event next week.

The new entry in the series is being developed by Vicarious Visions rather than Toys for Bob. SWAP Force introduces 16 new characters to the Skylanders world that feature moveable, swappable parts. Parts between the characters can be mixed and matched at your will, creating more than 250 unique combinations and characters. Each of the different parts bring different powers to the table, so players’ imaginations are really the only limitation. Figures from the other games will also be supported as well as 32 “core characters”, which will include new faces and returning favorites.

You can read the full press release about the new title on the next page and check out the first images below. You can expect to hear a lot more about this title when the toy Fair starts next week.

The Walking Dead scores the inevitable preorder bonuses

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Everyone knows that you can’t release a big game without offering some bonuses for gamers who preorder. Activision has announced a couple of bonus offers for gamers who preorder next month’s the Walking Dead: Survival Instinct on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.

As usual, different participating retailers are offering different packs. Amazon is giving away the Walker Execution Pack which will add five blade weapons to the game. GameStop is offering the a new mode for the game called Herd Mode Challenge for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. In addition to that mode, they are also giving away a walker ear keychain similar to Daryl’s necklace on the show.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, you can expect that all of these packs will be offered for a price after the game launches. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct launches for the PS3 and 360 on March 19 and a week later for the Wii U.

Wii U controller now works on the PC

by: John - - Add a Comment
It was bound to happen, but it has. Someone's got the Wii U gamepad to work on the PC. You can do a bunch of mapping now but the touchscreen and streaming features aren't there yet. The developer says he's working on it and it should be coming in the near future, but you can grab the files from here.

Unlike the Wii controller which is just Bluetooth, the Wii U controller works via Wifi since it needs the bandwidth for things like streaming. So it's not as simple as connecting the controller as there's a server application that needs to run to interact with the controller. It will take a little tinkering such as running XAMPP, but I wouldn't be surprised if the process simplifies even more as future iterations are released.

Check out the video of it in action. Now, if I can only find just the controller itself to purchase to try this out.

World of Tanks or Warplanes on consoles? Sign us up! Wargaming.net going console!

by: Sean Cahill - - Add a Comment
To be fair, the title is misleading, but the thought of playing either World of Tanks or World of Warplanes on my Xbox 360 sounds like a fantastic idea, but that isn't what's happening here.  Wargaming.net announced that they have acquired Day 1 Studios for the paltry sum of $20 Million USD.  Immediately after acquiring the development studio, the company known for free-to-play MMO titles announced that they are getting into the console business by starting development on an unnamed title.  We would expect it to be similar to the titles that they have done, but there is no telling what is next for Wargaming.net.  Either way, this is a major boost for the company and we expect great things out of this deal. Injustice looking more epic than we could have imagined

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. have released a new story trailer for the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us and wow, it looks incredible. It is apparent that Ed Boon and company weren’t just content with throwing a bunch of super heroes together and letting them battle it out; they are aiming to tell a tale of epic proportions with this game.

The Joker is creating havoc and it appears as though he has some major help. Our favorite DC heroes suddenly appear to be on the wrong side of the law which will lead to some interesting situations. It looks as if some new allegiances will be formed, is that Harley and Batman working together at one point?!?! Thanks to this trailer, this game has definitely moved up a few notches on my wanted list.

You got Fire Emblem in my Shin Megami Tensei

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
This was touched on earlier during last week's Nintendo Direct press conference, but Atlus is putting out the official word as well. Their long running Shin Megami Tensei series, a JRPG franchise that includes the popular Persona spinoff, will be teaming up with Nintendo's niche strategy RPG series Fire Emblem.

This is kind of a big deal because Nintendo hardly ever does crossovers like this, and it emphasizes just how friendly they are with Atlus these days. There aren't any details yet, but this announcement is only good news for the Wii U. Nintendo consoles have been hurting for solid RPGs ever since the N64, and while the GameCube and Wii marginally improved on that, Nintendo's RPG catalog has never rivaled the Playstation's. I'm also curious about how they'll mix the standard turn-based combat and demon training elements from SMT with the grid-based strategy gameplay from Fire Emblem. [READ MORE]

Are these screenshots from the not-yet-announced ME3 DLC?

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Two images, posted on Facebook this morning and attributed to Casey Hudson and Michael Gamble, appear to be screenshots related to the Mass Effect universe.  One (from Casey Hudson's Twitter) shows a bar setting with the name Silver Coast over the bar and the word "casino" on signs to either side, while the other (from Michael Gamble's Twitter) shows a krogan in full battle armor wielding some sort of giant axe.

Nothing approximating either imagine appears anywhere in any existing Mass Effect game.  One can only assume these are teasers for the talked-about-but-not-officially-announced "tear-jerker" Mass Effect 3 downloadable content that supposed to be out at some point in the future.

Hopefully, this means some actual information about the next Mass Effect 3 downloadable content pack is coming sooner rather than later.

As for the images themselves, all I can say is that some digging on Google tells me that Portugal's Atlantic seacoast is known as the Silver Coast.  Perhaps this point at at least some of the new DLC taking place on Earth.

Whatever it means, as we learn more, we'll pass it on to you.

Lex Luthor joins the Injustice roster

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
Injustice: Gods Among Us will be here in a couple months and NetherRealm is revealing more of the roster in this new trailer. We get some cool looks at Flash and Wonder Woman, and our first glimpse of Lex Luthor in action. Naturally the villainous mastermind has fashioned himself a high tech battlesuit, so that he can go toe-to-toe with, well, actual gods like Superman and Green Lantern. Although at least part of that thing has to be made of Kryptonite if Lex hopes to put the hurt on old Supes. There's also a brief teaser of the Joker at the end, and I gotta say it's sad that Mark Hamill isn't doing the voice. Kevin Conroy as Batman without Mark Hamill as Joker just seems...wrong somehow.
