Ubisoft says Assassin's Creed V won't be in Japan — so our best guess is India

by: Randy - - Add a Comment

If you want to know where Assassin's Creed V will take place, don't ask Jade Raymond — because she isn't telling. Raymond, managing editor of Ubisoft Toronto, did say in an interview at Adweek, however, that Assassin's Creed V won't take place in Feudal Japan. She's cool with the idea, and it's one of the most requested settings from the AC fanbase, but not everyone at Ubisoft has agreed that the samurai era makes for a good AC.

Back in 2011, a Ubisoft survey asked gamers where they wanted to see the next Assassin's Creed take place. The top-three responses were World War II, Feudal Japan, and Ancient Egypt. That didn't go over well at Ubisoft, though. The following year, in an interview with OXM, Alex Hutchinson, creative director for Assassin's Creed III, shot down all three of those locations. Those are "kind of the three worst settings for an AC game," Hutchinson said. "People on the internet suggest the most boring settings."

Well, no, Hutchinson. The internet didn't exactly suggest those. Ubisoft suggested those settings by placing them in a survey.

But that still leaves the other locations that were batted around the 2011 survey: Medieval China, Victorian England, the Portuguese and Spanish Invasion of the Americas, the Russian Revolution, and Ancient Rome. (The American Revolution was another choice and, voila, then there was Assassin's Creed III the following year.) Of course, it's quite possible Ubisoft has abandoned those other locations altogether.

Hutchinson also stated that Assassin's Creed III writer Corey May "really wants to do India. I would, too. I'd really love to do the Raj." The British Raj was the British rule in India between 1858 and 1947.

In the Adweek interview, Raymond said Assassin's Creed V will feature her favorite historical era. But that's as detailed as she'd get with her hint. She doesn't want to ruin the surprise.

Past Assassin's Creed games explored the Holy Land, Renaissance Italy, Constantinople, the Caribbean's Golden Age of Piracy, and Colonial America.

The series has always stuck close to Western Civilization's roots and influence. So (if you'll forgive me while I take a wild guess here), if Assassin's Creed V were to head to India, it could fudge an Assassins vs. Templars storyline involving the East India Company and the early British Raj (plenty of bad guys to choose from), plus it could incorporate AC's popular naval exploration and combat (because East India Co.), not to mention the ability to freerun over classical Indian architecture (because it's insane), and, yes, Hutchinson and May would both have their Indian AC dreams come true. Oh! The newest feature could be elephant-based combat!

So, you heard it here first. My own rampant speculation tells me that Assassin's Creed V is finally going to take Ubisoft's flagship enterprise to the Indian subcontinent.

New racer announced for Mario Kart 8...well, seven new racers to be exact.

by: Russell - - Add a Comment

Anyone who's seen some of my past Nintendo Download posts can probably guess that one of my favorite games is Super Mario Bros. 3, a game that I'm STILL waiting to hit the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles (hint hint Nintendo).  One of my favorite aspects of the game are the Koopa Kids, who kind of faded into obscurity after Super Mario World and didn't have another prominent role until the later New Super Mario Bros. games (well, there was Yoshi's Safari on the Super NES, but I tend not to count that).  Imagine my surprise when I came across the video below showing that the Koopalings will be in Mario Kart 8.

Needless to say I'm pretty excited.  This will be the first time that the Koopalings have been playable in any form in a game and I personally can't wait.  Too bad we can't get the voice actors from the 90's cartoons to reprise the voices, but it's not like the Koopalings have any speaking roles in the games anyways.  What's even stranger is that the video was posted on the 13th and I haven't seen it until just now.  How did I miss big news like this about the Koopalings?

Pier Solar HD may end up on 3DS and Wii U

by: Sam - - Add a Comment

Pier Solar and the Great Architects was a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis homebrew RPG released in December of 2010. In an attempt to reach a wider audience, developer WaterMelon Co. created a KickStarter campaign to make an HD version they could release on modern platforms. The KickStarter met it goal, and the game is set to release sometime this year on a variety of systems, including a Wii U version that would take advantage of the GamePad screen for special features. Now the developer says that a 3DS version may be on the way using the same second screen features.

I have been looking forward to the HD release of Pier Solar for awhile, and now I learn its coming to my favorite handheld as well? Count me in! I can't wait to see what this game is all about when it releases in the coming months.

Papercraft adventure game Tengami releasing February 20th

by: Sam - - Add a Comment

If you aren't already familiar with Nyamyam's pop-up book style game Tengami you better familiarize yourself quick. This beautiful papercraft adventure game will be releasing on iOS February 20th, with Wii U, PC, and Mac versions coming later this year. In this game you use the touch screen to interact with a paper environment, pushing and pulling pieces to solve puzzles and progress. The game will cost $4.99 when it releases on the App Store.

Tengami's paper world reminds me a lot of Tearaway, but with a bigger focus on puzzle solving. I'm still not sure if I will get the iOS version Thursday or wait for the Wii U version, but either way I'm looking forward to playing this great looking game.

Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton have been feuding over the various incarnations of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship since Summerslam.  In all that time, the one thing we haven't seen is Randy actually beat Bryan clean.  And we DEFIANTLY haven't seen him RKO Bryan off of a ladder, over the top rope and onto some tables.

Until now, thanks to 2k's Westlemania 30 contest to find the best in-game screen shot from WWE 2K14.

Gamer Levi McIntire of West Portsmouth, Ohio captured the winning shot, which you can see below.

NES Remix 2 is coming in April

by: Russell - - Add a Comment

Can't get enough NES Remix?  Or maybe there were some games that you wanted to see that weren't in the original.  Either way, it was announced on today's Nintendo Direct that NES Remix 2 will be coming to the Wii U on April 25th.  This time around we'll see twelve games featured from the later years of the NES life cycle, including:

  • Ice Hockey
  • Wario’s Woods
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 2 (Lost Levels)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Dr. Mario
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Kid Icarus
  • Punch-Out
  • Metroid
  • NES Open Tournament Golf

I'll be honest, as much as I love this selection (Ice Hockey being the only game listed that I have zero experience with), this would have been an awesome time to include one of the Mega Man games seeing as how the blue bomber will be making his Smash Bros. debut this spring.  Still we've got three Super Mario games, Kirby's Adventure, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, and Dr. Mario among others.  Just shut up and take my money!

Little Mac joins the Smash Bros. roster...and this time it's not as an Assist Trophy

by: Russell - - Add a Comment

Today Nintendo had another Nintendo Direct, during which they announced a new fighter for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS.  Turns out Little Mac has been promoted from an Assist Trophy to a full-fledged fighter, and watching the reveal trailer it's kind of weird when you compare his size to everyone else.  Sure Kirby and Mega Man are smallish characters, but Little Mac is, I believe, considered to be an adult, and I know his name is "Little" Mac, but...dang.  Even Samus is confused by his size.

What I'm curious about is towards the end of the video where we see Little Mac has a power meter above his health and once full he unleashes a powerful uppercut.  I'm wondering if that's just a special feature for Little Mac or if that appears as his Final Smash.

Men's Hockey officially gets underway tomorrow at the Sochi Olympics, and while the games as a whole have seen its share of problems, Men's Hockey does not seem to be one of them.  Rosters are absolutely loaded with talent, top to bottom, and this infographic, provided by EA Sports and NHL 14, gives an awesome breakdown of how the NHL factors into the Olympics this year.  Here are some stats to note:

-          Two Canadians – Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby lead the scoring in NHL 14 with 4.3 Million and 3.5 million in-game goalsrespectively

-          Rounding out the top 5 in-game scoring leaders include:

o   Russia’s captain, Pavel Datsyuk - 3.0 million goals

o   United States’ Patrick Kane and Slovakia’s Marian Hossa – 2.7 million goals

o   Russia’s Evgeni Malkin – 2.2 million goals

-          Canada’s Roberto Luongo dominates as the most winning goalie in NHL 14 with 4.1 million wins

-          Another Team Canada goalie Carey Price is the second most winning in-game goalie with 1.5 million wins

-          The Finland team boasts the most players who have won Olympic medals (14)

by: John - - Add a Comment

Boy, it doesn't pay to be a Wii U gamer does it? Between cancellations and delays, it's hard to get some third party games on the system.

Well, Ubisoft just announced, through and earnings call, that Watch Dogs on the Wii U is delayed. No word on when it's delayed to, but the game is scheduled for sometime later.

Watch Dogs is still on track for a release on all other systems between April and June.

Sega gives their mascot a new look with Sonic Boom

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment

Sega's fatigued hedgehog mascot is apparently getting a new lease on life with a fresh animated show and a new game coming exclusively to Wii U and 3DS. Sonic Boom is ostensibly a new start for the character, who has had a rather checkered game history in recent years. The new show gives Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy a slicker appearance and puts them in a dangerous new world, where each character will use their own unique attributes to solve puzzles and navigate the environment.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Sonic has needed a fresh start for a while now, as the series' story has gotten so convoluted and ridiculous that it's hard to believe it was once about a spiny blue mammal battling a mad scientist with a robot bent. The animated series angle has me worried--we've seen it go pretty badly with Pac-Man recently--but the gameplay looks like a mix between Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes, so it might at least play well. What's odd is that they're using the same voice actors as before; you'd think that with a reboot like this they'd hire a new voice cast, but maybe this is just another extension of the same old tired, messy Sonic series after all.

Nintendo puts emphasis on indie games in 2014

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment

One of the ways Nintendo is trying to turn around the Wii U's fortunes is through a renewed focus on indie games. To that end they have a huge list of indie titles coming to both Wii U and 3DS this year. We already know about titles like Moon Chronicles and Retro City Rampage DX, but this press release also details games like Shovel Knight, Wooden Sen'Sey and 1001 Spikes. Of course the Indie Connection Sale is also going on until February 13th.

I think this focus on indie games is the right way to go, I just hope it's not too late. Evoking a Steam-esque platform of a lot of good content for a bargain price could make the eShop more attractive to both consumers and developers. Nintendo has had this infrastructure in place for over a year now, it's about time they exploit it.

EVO 2014 lineup has been revealed

by: Russell - - Add a Comment

If you're a fan of fighting games then you're probably looking forward to EVO 2014 which will take place from July 11th to the 13th in Las Vegas.  Tonight on iPlayWinner's The Fray! podcast the lineup for EVO 2014 was revealed.  The games featured will be:

  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Killer Instinct
  • Injustice: Gods Amond Us
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma

In addition there will also be two special Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo events in honor of the game's twentieth anniversary* and talks are on going with Nintendo to have Smash Bros. as part of the event.  For those who saw last year's EVO and saw the live stream of Melee, it was a pretty awesome event.

For more info, check out the article over on shoryuken.com.

*While the article on Shoryuken states the SSF2T events are in honor of the game's tenth anniversary, the game came out in 1994, making this year the twentieth anniversary.  A simple typo I assume.
