Updates coming to turn off HDCP and add sharing capabilities to the PlayStation 4

by: John - - Add a Comment

One of the great things about the PlayStation 4 is the ease at which I could broadcast my gaming with the share button on the controller. It was quick to setup and quick to get going. Updates coming down the pipe will make video sharing even better.

First up, the ability to turn off HDCP, which is the DRM for HDMI, will be available so that you can hook up a capture device to record and stream with if you don't want to use the PlayStation 4's recording feature. For those that maybe want to capture higher resolution video or longer clips, this is a welcome update.

The update will also provide some video editing tools in case you want to make your videos a little more visually appealing. And one great thing coming down the pipe, you'll be able to export videos to an externally connected hard drive. Space is a premium on the PlayStation 4 so it'll be nice to be able to archive footage onto another medium.

Twitch and Ustream broadcasts will get a resolution bump up to 720P in the near future and you'll finally be able to archive PlayStation 4 streams on the services. I was always curious why my Twitch PS4 streams were never in my archive, but soon they will be.

No word on when these updates will be coming out though.

Reports: EA will publish Respawn Entertainment's next game, which will probably be Titanfall 2

by: John - - Add a Comment

With the success of Titanfall on the Xbox One and PC, and soon to be Xbox 360, it sounds like EA will be the one to publish the sequel to the game.

Reports from both Polygon and Gamespot peg EA as the publisher for Titanfall 2. Gamespot does say that they don't know if the game will go multi-platform, but sources for Polygon say that the second game won't be a Xbox and PC exclusive this time around.

Of course, the thought of seeing Titanfall 2 is a long ways away, so while this news is probably expected, it will be a pretty long time before we start to even get a glimmer of the second game. For now, enjoy the first one and the upcoming DLCs that will expand the game even more.

Newest Battlefield 4 DLC coming to Premium members on March 25th

by: Chuck - - Add a Comment

I've still been logging a lot of Battlefield 4 time lately and even though the game still has more than it's share of bugs I have to admit that I'm a bit tempted to pick a premium membership as the new Naval Strike DLC looks pretty cool.

The new goodness will be available on March 25th, two weeks before the plebs without premium get it and it features the new Carrier assault mode to the mix.  If you played Battlefield 2142 this will be familiar to you as it's an "homage" to that game in that each team has a carrier that they must protect while working to destroy the other teams carrier.  The DICE folks have put up a blog post with more details if you want them.

In addition to the new mode you'll get four maps to play it on, five new weapons, two new gadgets, a new vehicle, and at least one or two more annoying bugs that will have to be fixed in an upcoming patch.

Call of Duty's first DLC pack, Onslaught, available to play free for the weekend on Xbox Live

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment

On the fence about buying the Onslaught DLC pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts? Well Activision and Infinity Ward are going to be nice enough to allow you to demo the DLC pack at no cost as it will be available via a free trial this weekend on Xbox Live.

From Friday, March 21st to Monday, March 24th, Xbox One and Xbox 360 gamers will be able to play the four new multiplayer maps, the new weapon and the first episode of the Extinction game mode for free. All you have to do is download the Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught DLC Pack 1 from the in game store and you are good to go.

Unfortunately, as with all Call of Duty DLC, PC and PS3/PS4 players will have to wait for the DLC trail as it will arrive at a later date.

First trailer for FIFA 2014 World Cup is now available for viewing

by: Sean Cahill - - Add a Comment

We're just three months away from Brazil hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the tournament to decide the world champion of association football.  EA Sports, having obtained the license for the World Cup, has released the first trailer for the officially licensed game FIFA 2014 World Cup.  While FIFA 14 actually includes the World Cup as part of both versions of career mode (Manager or Player), this is a standalone game that will feature new animations and build upon the modes that are already included in FIFA 14.  Check out the trailer below, and also be sure to make your way over to the official blog and site for the game, which can be found here.

Sony unveils Project Morpheus, their take at a VR headset

by: John - - Add a Comment

It took the Oculus Rift to make me a believer, but they aren't the only game in town. Today at GDC, Sony finally unveiled their take on a VR headset called the Project Morpheus.

As reported by Engadget, Project Morpheus took three years to build and it's going to be coming to the PlayStation 4. The headset features that familiar glow that's in Move controllers and will feature a high resolution screen with great sound.

It sounds like you'll need the PlayStation 4 camera to use Project Morpheus as well, seeing as it's built with some Move technology. Sony is aiming to make this easy to use so let's hope for a wireless setup along with solid battery life.

No specifics were mentioned and it's probably a little ways off before they need to, but with Sony jumping into the fray and rumors of Microsoft also looking into making a VR headset, VR might be taking off on all platforms in the near future.

Watch the island grow from an uninhabited tropical oasis to an powerful industrial city-state under the rule of the El Presidente and his dynasty. Tropico 5 will have the usual challenges of tending to your people's needs and dealing with opposing factions. Eight new screenshots for Batman: Arkham Knight

by: John - - Add a Comment

Eight new screenshots have surfaced for the upcoming Rocksteady produced Batman: Arkham Knight. We have some looks at Jim Gordon, the Penguin, the Riddler, and the Batmobile.

The game certainly looks a little more gritty, if that's possible. Gordon looks pretty ragged and I'm guessing the female in the screenshot is Barbara Gordon. If so, I'd love to see a cameo of Batgirl in the game. The shot of Batman flying over the city is breathtaking though and I hope that's a glimpse of the scope of the game.

Batman: Arkham Origins is due out this October 14th on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

PSN gearing up for renting

by: John - - Add a Comment

In what could be a nice game changer, it looks like the PlayStation Network is going to be offering renting soon. Spotted by someone browsing the PlayStation store, there's a screen cap of the game Catherine with options to rent it 1 day, 10 days, or 30 days.

Right now, all of them said free because it's not implemented yet, but it looks like the infrastructure's getting into place. This would be a very nice addition to the PlayStation Store letting folks try games for a limited amount of time. I know there are a few games I'd love to have rented over buying.

Also, this should make it more convenient for some than having them go to a kiosk like Redbox to grab a game to play. Now the key is the pricing structure, of course, and if you do get a reduced cost on the total say after you rent it and want to buy the game outright.

Eight features the NFL made EA remove from Madden over the years

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment

Madden celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and while the series has gotten a number of new features over the years, there have also been many series that have been removed from the game as the series has evolved. Did you know that some of those features were removed at the request of the NFL? ExtraMustard.com reached out to a number of current and former producers on the Madden team to get the scoop on what features the NFL made them remove over the years.

  • The Ambulance - This one is kinda obvious. In early versions of Madden an Ambulance would come on the field if an injury took place. Most people however remember the Ambulance for its comic relief as it would almost always plow over other players on the field as it came in.
  • Anything related to concussions - Another obvious request. If you are an NFL fan, you have noticed the NFL try their hardest to reduce concussions like dishing out penalties for helmet to helmet contact and forcing players who may have concussion like symptoms to sit out games until they are cleared. Since in real life, injuries aren't diagnoses until players go under and MRI, the language of injuries has been changed from something like "Back sprain, out 6 weeks" to just "head injury".
  • Hit Stick Violence - Simply put, the NFL didn't like that this feature could be used to make players heads snap back. They requested it be toned down so animations didn't look like it would cause injury to another player.
  • De-Helmeting - A feature that hasn't been seen since Madden 2005. In earlier games, extra hard hits on opponents could cause their helmet to fly off. Considering how much attention the NFL pays these days to head injuries, it's no surprise this hasn't made its way back into the franchise.
  • Freehweeling owner mode - This one I have a problem with. I understand the NFL wants to keep the product true to life but these are the kinds of freedoms I feel should be present in videogames. Years ago, Madden let you customize the entire team, from their logos to uniform colors. The NFL wanted to make sure that the Oakland Raiders or the Cleveland Browns weren't running around in pink helmets.
  • Celebrations - Of course Touchdown celebrations have been a staple for the Madden and the NFL for years, but just like real life, any celebrations that would cause a penalty in real life won't be seen in the game.
  • Attacking Bystanders - Another feature from previous games was the ability to take out coaches, referees and field staff that were standing on the sidelines. EA did create animations for photographers on the side lines being taken out by players flying out of bounds, but sadly, it never made it into the final game.
  • Stadium Attendance - EA wanted to keep the product as faithful to real life as possible, so they thought it would be a great feature accurate turnouts for home teams. No one shows up to Jacksonville Jaguars games, so EA made it so no one would show up in the game. Well the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars heard about this and was none too pleased. With one call to the NFL, EA was forced to make the change. While not every team will have sellout stadiums, they won't be half empty either.

Developer diary for Alien: Isolation talks about the Alien itself

by: John - - Add a Comment

Creative Assembly seems to be going for the Amnesia/Outlast type of feel with Alien: Isolation making it a more survival horror game rather than the action games that the past few Aliens games exhibited.

To help generate that feeling of dread, the team is trying to make the Alien reactive rather than scripted. Once you figure out a pattern for a creature, it becomes less terrifying. Creative Assembly hopes to have an organic experience when coming up against the creature and it's definitely one that you want to stay away from.

The footage, which from past experiences you shouldn't take as final, exhibit some great atmosphere and if it's any indication of the final product, really captures eerie feeling that something, somewhere is stalking you in this very scary place.

The Witcher 3 will be delayed until February 2015

by: John - - Add a Comment

In news that will be pretty sad to a lot of RPG fans, CD Projekt has delayed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from this year until February of 2015. It's set to hit the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, but we'll have to wait a bit longer.

I always say delay it until you get it right. In this case, CD Projekt wants a few more months to really put the spit and polish on the game. I know the series has some hardcore fans and I know CD Projekt doesn't want to do a disservice to them by producing a sub-par Witcher game.

From what I've seen of The Witcher 3 during NVIDIA events, it looks really really good graphically. I think a few more months to help flesh it out is a good idea and if it turns out to be a bloody good game, then no one will really remember the game being pushed back a little bit nor care that it did.

CoD Championship announces the 32 final teams.

by: Sean Cahill - - Add a Comment

E-Sports Championships have become rather commonplace in the world of gaming, primarily regarding first person shooters that requires more than just one person going on a tirade while the rest try not to die.  Activision continues the trend by announcing the Call of Duty Championship, which is represented by 32 teams from around the world.  Coverage of the championship can be found on MLG.tv while the final match will be available also on Xbox Live on Sunday, March 30th.  Good luck to all of the competitors!

New Tropico 5 screenshots will make you wish the winter weather would just stay away

Well, if you're in Ohio anyway where Mother Nature just rolls a d4 to determine which season it is.  These new Tropico 5 screens will make you wish you were somewhere where the weather is always nice and sunny and you weren't worried about having to bring your winter coat with you just in case.  Kind of makes me wish my vacation was right around the corner.

Naughty Dog and Wargaming team-up is decidedly un-naughty

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment

When was the last time you spent 24 straight hours gaming?  When it was over, did you feel good about yourself?  I've never done it, but I'd imagine that gaming for that long might leave one feeling something akin to one of those mornings where you tell yourself, "I am NEVER doing that again!" right before you projectile vomit near your nearest toilet.'

What Naughty Dog, Wargaming.net, Rooster Teeth, and Astro Gaming are putting together should at least leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling that hugs the pain away.  You see, Operation Supply Drop is holding their third annual fundraising event that raises money to send videogame care packages to our soldiers overseas in combat and in hospitals recovering from combat.

You can follow the jump to learn more.  Visit www.operationsupplydrop.org for details.  The event is being held during the 8-bit Salute on May 17-18, so you have a few months to build up you marathon-gaming skills.

More bugs gets introduced with the new Battlefield 4 patch

by: John - - Add a Comment

Battlefield 4 was patched up a few days ago and I popped into the game for the first time since then. What you see below is a few minutes into my first match since the patch and I've already ran into this bug a few times. It seems no matter what DICE does, they keep putting out patches that causes new issues.

For this one, you can see the person who killed me is highlighting a teammate of mine though the name is right on who really fired the kill shot. Oh, that 0HP bug is back again, which I thought was squashed previously. Sigh....

New LEGO The Hobbit Trailer spoofs buddy-up heist flicks

by: Cary - - Add a Comment

The latest trailer for LEGO The Hobbit takes a humorous look at the team you'll have assembled to go on your quest. In true LEGO game fashion there are plenty of jokes goofing on each character's adventurer genre tropes as well as some plain old slapstick. Check out the trailer below and wonder with me what the Italian Job or Ocean's 11(or 12 or 13) might look like with Middle Earth casting.
