Harmonix adding 80's and 90's power bands to Rock Band DLC

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
In the something for everyone department, Harmonix will be expanding the Rock Band library next week with some rather cool additions for fans of the 80's and 90's music scene.  Culture Club, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Phish and Loverboy will all be bringing some of their top songs to the service and I imagine some Phish fans are probably dancing a jig and lighting up even as I type this.  The pricing will be the standard $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song with the $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Bass/Guitar upgrade if available.  The songs coming out next week are:

Culture Club – “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”
Faith No More – “From Out of Nowhere”
Loverboy – “Working for the Weekend” X
Phish – “Stash” X
Phish – “Tweezer”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Big Bang Baby” X
Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Rock Band bringing Roy Orbison and some KISS to next week's DLC

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
The folks at Harmonix are bringing two iconic giants from different ends of the music spectrum to meet in the throngs of Rock Band DLC next week. Gene and the boys from Kiss will meet up with The Big O Roy Orbison in what promises to be another output of MS Pts from my account. The DLC features three Roy Orbison classic songs in celebration of what would be his 75th birthday and two Live KISS tracks. Pricing will $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song, $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade or $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for the Roy Orbison: 75th Birthday Pack. The full list of songs:
  • Roy Orbison – “Blue Bayou”
  • Roy Orbison – “Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)”
  • Roy Orbison – “Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)” X
  • KISS – “Rock and Roll All Nite (Live)” X
  • KISS – “Strutter (Live)”
Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song. [READ MORE]

Angry Birds now sporting Easter Eggs

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Those folks at Rovio know a good thing when they see it, and have released another free update to Angry Birds Seasons this morning. The Angry Birds Seasons update to 1.4 is all about Easter and includes:
  • 15 new levels
  • New theme
  • Plenty of golden eggs
  • Some sort of Twitter updates
Apparently, this update also makes Angry Birds the largest App in the AppStore, whatever that means. Regardless, the game is addicting as heck and I plan to get some time in before my 5-year old confiscates it from me.

Rock Band 3 DLC next week going with most obnoxious song ever

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Don’t get me wrong, I love Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny”, but the song seems to find a way to just stick in your head for hours if you hear it at the wrong point of your day. So maybe next week when it, along with songs from Anberlin, Ohio Players and Reliant K hits the Rock Band 3 DLC world we can become immune to its powers. Most of you will be familiar with the two Ohio Player songs, as “Fire” is the theme song to Hell’s Kitchen and “Love Rollercoaster” was covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Stadium Arcadium. I’m not as familiar with the other three songs and artists, but they all sounded like catchy tunes (or hardcore with Blood and Thunder.)

As usual, pricing is $1.99/169 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per track with the $0.99/80 MS Pt/100 Wii Pt charge to upgrade to Pro Bass/Pro Guitar for the three tracks marked with an ‘X’. Here is the list, so break out your points and be ready to download them.
  • Anberlin – “Breaking”
  • Mastodon – “Blood and Thunder” X
  • Ohio Players – “Fire”
  • Ohio Players – “Love Rollercoaster” X
  • Relient K – “Must Have Done Something Right”
  • Tommy Tutone – “867-5309/Jenny” X

Beware, the Oni has been unleashed

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Last week, Capcom officially unlocked the hidden character Oni in the arcade version of Super Street Fighter IV. That character was previously unlocked by arcade owners back in December but removed at the request of Capcom. Oni marks the second of two time release characters featured in the game, following Evil Ryu’s recent release.

Capcom has released a plethora of media highlighting the powerhouse character which you can gander at below. Now, let’s just hope that we receive news later this week that the rest of the Arcade Edition content is heading to consoles once the Captivate embargo lifts.

Grand Funk Railroad and Joy Division join the Rock Band DLC ranks

by: Dan - - Add a Comment

Harmonix is debuting a couple of new artists (and adding to one’s catalog) next week for Rock Band DLC and they should be very familiar. The J. Geils Band (“Freeze-Frame” ) and Joy Division (“Love Will Tear Us Apart”) will each have a single and Grand Funk Railroad will have two very recognizable songs available when the DLC hits on April 5th. Thanks Harmonix, as I now have another reason to drop some points to add to my Rock Band DLC collection. Pricing will be the usual, with $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per track $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade on either “We’re an American Band” or “Freeze-Frame”. Here is the complete list of songs:

Grand Funk Railroad – “The Loco-Motion”
Grand Funk Railroad – “We’re an American Band” X
J. Geils Band – “Freeze-Frame” X
Joy Division – “Love Will Tear Us Apart” X

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

PETA trying to get Vick lifted from Madden cover tourney

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
This year EA Sports is holding a March Madness style tournament to determine the Madden 11 cover athlete. The event started with 32 players (one from each team) and the voting has moved (along with the 16 winners) into round 2. However, the Philadelphia Eagles player representative (Michael Vick) is being targeted by PETA to be removed from the tourney for obvious reasons.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, EA Sports president Peter Moore basically stated that Vick “served his time” and the his 2010 season alone merit him being in the tourney. Considering Vick was MVP runner-up and comeback player of the year, Moore is dead on with is assessment. In my opinion, PETA needs to move on and spend their vast energy and resources on people and problems that haven’t already paid their debt to society.

BTW, if Vick were to win, he would be the first two-time cover athlete having previously graced the Madden cover in 2004. That year he had a decent enough season (including two playoff games and a pro-bowl appearance) to consider the Madden curse not invoked.

Angry Bird:The Movie as made by Michael Bay

The most excellent folks at Rooster Teeth have put together this trailer for a fictional Angry Birds movie.  I know it seems a bit on the silly side but it would probably still be more entertaining than the Super Mario Brothers movie...

Evil Ryu unleashed on the arcades

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
It has been known for a while that Evil Ryu wa sone of the new hidden characters in the arcade version of Super Street Fighter IV; a couple of arcades actually managed to unlock him (and Oni) but relocked them at Capcom’s request. Well, Evil Ryu will be contained no more as Capcom has unlocked him via time release in the arcade version of Super Street Fighter.

Andriasang has reported that the character was unlocked in the arcades today, making him available to those lucky enough to live near a SSF4 arcade machine. Capcom has released a variety of screenshots and images depicting the new character, which you can find below. Reports indicate that Evil Ryu plays a lot like a combination of Ryu and Akuma, though he moves a bit slower and packs a little stronger of a punch. Regardless of how he plays... he looks super cool in the images below.

Now, if Capcom can just work on getting the Arcade Edition content to consoles... then we can truly be happy.

Rock Band DLC features DragonForce, Santana and Jefferson Airplane

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Looks like next week’s Rock Band DLC will cost me some more cash, as songs from Santana, Jefferson Airplane, DragonForce and Blood, Sweat & Tears will be available on March 29th. The Days of Peace Pack 01 features three artists that performed at the original Woodstock with some of their most recognizable work. The two DragonForce songs are off their Inhuman Rampage album, but I am curious why we didn’t get a third song to make a second pack.

We do get one bonus this week as we will actually get two songs fully upgradeable to Pro Bass/Guitar for $0.99 in Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” and DragonForce’s “Through the Fire and Flames”. I personally am looking forward to Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love”, as I am a huge fan of classic rock. Pricing will be $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for the Days of Peace Pack 01 and $0.99 for the Pro Bass/Guitar upgrades. Here is the full list of songs for nest week:

Days of Peace Pack 01
Jefferson Airplane – “Somebody to Love”
Blood, Sweat & Tears – “Spinning Wheel”
Santana – “Black Magic Woman”X

DragonForce – “Through the Fire and Flames”X
DragonForce – “Operation Ground and Pound”

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Anomaly Warzone Earth digitally hits PCs and Macs on April 8th

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
On April 8th aliens will attempt to take over our world.  It's up to you to stop them in 11 Bit Studio's Anomaly Warzone Earth.  As 11 Bit Studio recently announced Anomaly Warzone Earth will be available for $9.99 and be distributed via Steam, GamersGate, and other stores that they plan to unveil shortly.  What's interesting about this game is that it's a played using a reverse tower defense formula.  That's right, the aliens have the towers and turrets while you plan your routes strategically to take them out.  Ever wonder what it's like to be the massive army marching down the road taking out your towers?  Well it seems like now's your chance...or rather you'll get your chance when Anomaly Warzone Earth is released on April 8th.

The Piano man cometh again

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Harmonix brought us the first taste of Bill Joel for Rock Band 3 back in December 2010, and today, we found out that a fresh batch will be arriving next week. The Billy Joel Piano Challenge consist of six songs that bring the total Billy Joel collection to 18 in the Rock Band library. This will be a must buy, and I am glad to see a mic of classic hits and deeper cuts made this list. Pricing as usual will be $0.99 for the Pro Bass/Guitar upgrade on “Prelude/Angry Young Man”, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $9.99/800 MS Pts/1000 Wii Pts for the entire Billy Joel Piano Challenge.
  • “I Go to Extremes”
  • “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)”
  • “My Life”
  • “Prelude/Angry Young Man” X
  • “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”
  • “She’s Always a Woman”

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Support Japan: buy SF4 iPhone

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
With the recent natural disasters in Japan, many companies and organizations around the world are lending a hand to support those who have been affected. Capcom is one of the gaming companies stepping to the plate in an attempt to raise funds for the relief efforts in Japan with a special sale on what is arguably their best iOs title.

Capcom has discounted the iPhone version of Street Fighter 4 to $0.99 for the next week and will donate all proceeds raised during that time to relief efforts in Japan. This is in addition to the initial 100 million yen donation Capcom issued over the weekend. If you don’t already own the game, you cannot beat the price and above all else, it is for a really good cause.

Angry Birds invade SXSW

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
The Angry Birds invasion is everywhere, including the side of a 15-story building in Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest (SXSW). Apparently, the folks at TheHandheldBlog.com were attending the Nokia Connects party when the massive Angry Birds video was played vertically on the side of the building. The video was recorded on the Nokia N8 (check out TheHandheldBlog.com story) I am pretty sure that the camera, as good as it is, doesn’t do it justice, as the video must have been pretty spectacular in person. Listen for the guy near the end yelling “Might Eagle!”

Angry Birds gaining the luck of the Irish

Rovio is dishing out even more levels for Angry Birds with a St. Patrick’s Day update to Angry Birds Seasons. The new update for the game went live this morning and brings 15 new levels and 2 additional golden eggs.

More Angry Birds is a good thing right? I would think so, especially when the update is free to owners of the game on both the iOs and Android platforms. The update is available for free from both the Android Marketplace and iTunes App Store so what are you waiting for?

Rovio has also released a trailer showing off a couple of the new levels in the update:

Singles including two by The Police fill out the Rock Band DLC list next week

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Four new tracks are coming for Rock Band DLC and they include two singles by The Police and one each from OK Go and War. The headliner will be full Pro Mode version of “Every Breath You Take” by the Police which I would imagine will garner a few downloads. However, “So Lonely”, “Spill the Wine” and “Shooting the Moon” should have quite a few fans too. “Shooting the Moon” was featured on “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” soundtrack. Pricing will be a straight $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade for “Every Breath You Take.”
  • OK Go – “Shooting the Moon”
  • The Police – “So Lonely”
  • The Police – “Every Breath You Take” X
  • War – “Spill the Wine”

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Angry Birds among most profitable games ever

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
It really doesn’t matter if you have grown tired of hearing about Rovio’s Angry Birds, the franchise isn’t going anywhere, any time soon. In a recent interview with Wired Magazine, it was revealed just how successful the game has become...

Rovio states that the game cost roughly $140,000 (converted from Euros listed in article) to produce across its various platforms but has brought in more than $70 million in revenue... talk about printing your own money. The success that the game has seen thus far is fueling the future of the franchise. The Angry Birds game itself is only the beginning as Rovio is planning to expand the series into even more games, comic books, toy lines, and even television shows. I have said it before, and I will say it again... Angry Birds is going to be a title we will be hearing for a long, long time...

There is plenty of more insight given about the studio and its plans for the future in the article linked above... it’s worth checking out.

Angry Birds Seasons now has Valentine's day levels

by: Chuck - - Add a Comment
Last night while watching the Jackets take down the Penguins I noticed that there was a free update for Angry Birds Seasons on my iPad.  Firing up the game after it was updated revealed the Rovio has pushed out a full set of Valentine's day levels ahead of the holiday next week.  The levels are fairly slick and there's some nice new artwork and animation for the release (things explode in a poof of hearts).  Good stuff if you already own the game and a good incentive if you haven't bought it already (Android users get it for free so really what are you waiting for).

Angry Birds flying onto a 3DS this year

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Rovio has confirmed that Angry Birds is headed to Nintendo’s new handheld by the end of this year. The confirmation came in the form of Tweets from the studio.

Following the confirmation of a 3DS version of the game, Rovio also revealed details on other plans involving Nintendo. In addition to receiving an exclusive 3DS release, the three previous versions of Angry Birds will see digital distribution releases on the handheld by the end of the year as well. The Wii version that was announced last year remains in development and is also on track for a release by the end of the year.

Angry Birds 2 coming?

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Rovio previously stated that they had no plans to produce a sequel to the smash-hit mobile game Angry Birds... but were they being honest? During a story that aired on a German television network covering Rovio, screenshots were shown within the various footage that don’t match up with any Angry Birds game that we have seen thus far.

The news story, shown below, shows a wide variety of gameplay footage but a couple of shots visible at 01:55 and 04:16 depict stages that have not appeared in the original, Halloween, or Christmas editions of the game. It is known that Rovio is planning a Valentine’s Day edition of the game and that version is discussed in the story but the screens in question don’t match up with the descriptions offered for the Valentine’s Day level designs.

Could this be the first glimpse of a true sequel to Angry Birds? Maybe... maybe not... either way the story is still interesting to view if you are a fan of Angry Birds.
