Angry Birds invade the Far East with updates

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
I guess those little birds were finally mad enough to move overseas, as the release of Angry Birds Seasons v1.6 brings a very oriental theme to the game to celebrate the Moon Festival. There are 30 brand new levels that have pagodas, rabbits and red lanterns, all with a harvest moon backdrop. For those that love the challenge of the hidden objects, there are eight pieces of Mooncake hidden which unlocks a special Mooncake level.

Not to be left out, Angry Birds Rio has an update as well for iOS, which fixes some stability issues within iOS, has 12 new levels, and “Airfield Chase” Episode and four new achievements.

So if you family BBQ stinks over the Labor Day Weekend, just pull out your handheld device and work your way through the new levels.

Beastie Boys and Heart highlight next weeks Rock Band DLC

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Unfortunately I will have to wait to partake in this week’s Rock Band DLC, but there are several of the songs announced today that I plan to grab.  Both tracks by the Beastie Boys (“Make Some Noise” and “No Sleep till Brooklyn”) are begging for my money as well as the classic “Barracuda” from Heart.  I am not as familiar with the James Brown and Rufus titles, but I am sure there are folks eagerly awaiting them.

Pricing is the standard $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade.  Here is the list that will drop on August 2nd:

Beastie Boys – “Make Some Noise
Beastie Boys – “No Sleep till Brooklyn
Heart – “Barracuda”X
James Brown– “Super Bad, Pts. 1 & 2”X
Rufus (ft. Chaka Khan) – “Tell Me Something Good

Say Yes to a five-pack of Rock Band DLC

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Way back in October of 2008, I put together a list of artists and songs that were MIA from the band games such as the Rock Band series.  Since that time, a lot of the artists and songs on my list have made it to one of the platforms, but this week finally brings a big one song that I was hoping for within the five-pack of hits from Yes.   The one I wanted was “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, but we got four more classic Yes songs to go with it.

There is a solid chance I will be getting all of these, as the songs are so intricate and equally tough for vocals as well as instruments.  Pricing will be $8.99/680 MS Pts/900 Wii Pts for “Yes Pack 01”, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade.  The five songs coming on July 26th are:

Yes – “Heart of the Sunrise
Yes – “I’ve Seen All Good People”X
Yes – “Owner of a Lonely Heart”X
Yes – “South Side of the Sky
Yes – “Starship Trooper
Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Soundgarden Rock Band DLC next week? Yes Please!

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Another week, more MS Point out of my account as Harmonix is bringing six of Soundgarden’s greatest songs into the Rock Band fold next week in celebration of the band’s 2011 tour.  I have been hoping for more Soundgarden tracks since Rock band 2, and it looks like we will get a pick two from each of their albums Badmotorfinger, Superunknown and Down on the Upside.  We will also get a legacy upgrade to “Pretty Noose”, which was DLC way back in 2008.  Pricing will be the standard $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrades, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $9.99/800 MS Pts/1000 Wii Pts for “Celebrating Soundgarden On Tour 2011” pack.

The full 6-Pack DLC:
Soundgarden – “Blow Up the Outside World
Soundgarden – “Burden in My Hand”X
Soundgarden – “Fell on Black Days
Soundgarden – “Outshined”X
Soundgarden – “Rusty Cage
Soundgarden – “The Day I Tried to Live”X
Soundgarden – “Pretty Noose”  (Eligible for Pro Guitar upgrade on July 19th)

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Rock Band hitting the Singles scene this week with R.E.M and more

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
I am glad I stocked up on Microsoft Points after last week’s announcement from Harmonix of Poison hitting Rock Band DLC. Next week, we get a bunch of singles, but they are all highly recognizable and should be a blast to play. Two of them come from System of a Down, who provide us with a little “Aerials” and “Hypnotize” to go along with many of their tracks already available. We also get the classic “For What It’s Worth” from Buffalo Springfield and “Turning Japanese” from The Vapors. However, the biggest catch is probably R.E.M.s “Man on the Moon”. Pricing is the standard $1.99 USD/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song with $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade. As previously mentioned, your July 5th Rock Band DLC:

Buffalo Springfield – “For What It’s Worth”X
R.E.M. – “Man On the Moon
System of a Down – “Aerials”X
System of a Down – “Hypnotize
The Vapors – “Turning Japanese”X

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Poison makes Rock Band debut next week, joined by more 3 Doors Down

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Starting next Tuesday, Rock Band fans will finally have access to one of the best Hair Bands of the 1980’s when Poison makes their debut into the Rock Band franchise. Joining them will be another excellent band in 3 Door Down, with each providing a trio of songs to the DLC packet this week. The 3 Doors Down tracks include the single “When You’re Young” which is the first single from their upcoming album Time of My Life which releases on July 19th. The Poison tracks are all very familiar (some of their most popular songs) and should be a blast to play in the game. Unfortunately, the power ballad “Every Rose has its Thorns” is not included this time, but we can only hope to see it in a future release.

Pricing will be $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Upgrade, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts for each track or $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for either the Poison Track 01 or the 3 Doors Down Pack 01. Here are the six tracks coming next week:

3 Doors Down – “Here Without You”
3 Doors Down – “When I’m Gone”X
3 Doors Down – “When You’re Young”
Poison – “Nothin’ but a Good Time’X
Poison – “Talk Dirty to Me”
Poison – “Unskinny Bop”
Tracks marked with an 'X' include Pro Bass/Pro Guitar Upgarde for $0.99

The great thing about the recent Rock Band DLC is that Harmonix is starting to get access to popular artists that previously had little to no tracks within the series. Unfortunately for me, that means a drain on my wallet.

Country sale for Rock Band also ongoing

Rock Band DLC to cost me next week with Maroon 5 and Puddle of Mudd

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Oh Boy, Harmonix is going to get some cash out of me next week, as they are releasing new Rock Band DLC from two of my favorite groups. Puddle of Mudd and Maroon 5 will both be getting the three-track DLC treatment, with PoD making their debut with the Rock Band franchise. All six songs are radio hits, so don’t expect any deep tracks here. In fact, if they bleep it out of the lyrics, I guarantee you that major league F-Bombs will be dropped during many a rendition of PoD’s “She hates Me.”

Pricing will be the traditional $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii PTs per song and $5.49/440 MS Pts/ 550 Wii Pts for either the Puddle of Mudd Pack 01 or Maroon Five Pack 02.

Maroon 5 – “Misery
Maroon 5 – “This Love”X
Maroon 5 – “Won’t Go Home Without You
Puddle of Mudd – “Blurry
Puddle of Mudd – “Control
Puddle of Mudd – “She Hates Me” X

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Rock Band DLC next week will debut some well-known artists and bring back and old friend

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Harmonix has packaged together a cool collection of singles from four different bands for next week’s Rock Band DLC. With the exception of the two Avenged Sevenfold songs, the others will be making their Rock Band debut and the specific songs coming out next week all received heavy airplay during their time on the charts. The most unique (and probably recognizable) will be “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba, followed by the 80’s classic hit “Take on Me” by A-Ha and the 1990’s Live tracks “I Alone” and “Lightning Crashes.” Overall, this is a nice mix of tunes and provides a some songs for those that love either pop, rock or both. Pricing will be $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade and $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song.

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Bruno Mars, Rise Against and more Pro upgrades hitting Rock Band next week

by: Dan - - Add a Comment

You gotta love Harmonix, as they have brought another popular artist to Rock Band and added to the collections of a few of the most popular bands already in the game. Next week will see the debut of Bruno Mars with three tracks from his Doo-Wop & Hooligans album including the infectious ‘Just the way You Are’. In addition, Rise Against is getting three more tracks added to their Rock Band library, including their best seller ‘Help is on the Way’. I personally am excited about the two upgrades, as both ‘Kickstart My Heart’ and ‘Even Flow’ are getting the Pro Upgrade add-on treatment.

Pricing will be $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for either the Bruno Mars Pack 01 or Rise Against Pack 02. Check out all the new DLC:

Rise Against – “Help Is on the Way
Rise Against – “The Good Left Undone”X

Pro Guitar/Bass Additions for Legacy Songs:
Mötley Crüe – “Kickstart My Heart
Pearl Jam – “Even Flow

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song

It also looks like we are back to a normal delivery date, with Tuesday June 7th the release here in the U.S.

Roku, Rovio and some Angry Birds invading your TV

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Those pissed off birdies will soon have a new place to monopolize your time, as Angry Birds parent company Rovio has signed a deal with Internet TV company Roku to bring a whole messload of Angry Birds to your home TV. Not only will the games Angry Birdsa, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio be available for play, but there will be a video channel on the Roku Channel store that will have Angry Birds short animated films and sell Angry Birds Merchandise.

I can’t help but think that this may be the tipping point of over-exposure for the Angry Birds franchise. I am curious to see how well this will translate to the Roku box and how the controls will work, as I am sure Google internet TV, Apple TV, and TV manufactures with web-enabled TV will be keeping a close eye on this. In the meantime, if you have a Roku box, expect your time to be wasted even more by the product affectionately known as the Boob Tube.

May we have some more Ozzy in our Rock Band? Yes Please!

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Last week I used some deductive reasoning and common sense to deduce that Ozzy would be the last DLC for Rock Band in May 2011 and all we needed was official word. Well, that showed up bout 10 minutes ago, and we now know what tracks we will get from Ozzy in conjunction with the 30 year anniversary and re-release of Blizzard Of Ozz And Diary Of A Madman. It looks like my predictions weren't too far off, as we get eight great tracks, but none are live (fortunately, not a huge fan.)

The only downer I see is that two of the more popular songs (Bark at the Moon and Mama, I'm Coming Home) can only be purchased by buying the entire eight-track pack. For some it isn't big deal, but it may make a tough choice for the casual fan that likes those Ozzy songs, but isn't much into 'Mr. Crowley', 'Over the Mountain' or 'Steal Away'. Costs will be $13.49/1080 1350 Wii Pts for Ozzy Osbourne 8-Pack, $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per song and $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for each Pro guitar/Bass upgrade.

Here are the songs:
  • “Bark at the Moon” X (available only as part of the 8-pack)
  • “Diary of a Madman”
  • “Flying High Again”
  • “I Don’t Know”
  • “Mama, I’m Coming Home” X (available only as part of the 8-pack)
  • “Mr. Crowley” X
  • “Over the Mountain”
  • “Steal Away (The Night)”
Tracks marked with “X” have optional Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions available. [READ MORE]

Touching is good with Anomaly Warzone Earth

by: Sean Cahill - - Add a Comment
11 Bit Studios is taking another step with its PC and Mac based game, Anomaly Warzone Earth, by including touchscreen compatibility this June.  While many PC gamers prefer to build their systems by hand, there has been an influx of touchscreen capable PCs that have been hitting the market.  While tower defense games are not graphic intensive and require a heavy hitting graphics card, you have to wonder what the touchscreen is going to do, if anything, for such a game.  With the touchscreen add-on becoming available in just a few weeks, we will get to see first-hand how it handles it.

Ozzy to close out May Rock Band DLC...what do you want to see?

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Earlier this week, we posted some highlights form Harmonix’s Chris Rigopulos interview he did with Game Informer. One of the topics was that Ozzy Osbourne was planning on re-releasing both Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz near the end of May and would be hitting Rock Band DLC around that time. With Lady Gaga on the schedule for next week and only May 31st remaining, we can expect to see an official announcement about Ozzy within the next week.

What we don’t know yet is what and how many songs will be made available, as both re-releases include several special editions of songs as well as many liv versions. However, I am thinking we will get a nice quantity of songs, possibly up to six to eight tracks. About a year ago, we had the Ozzy Osbourne 1 pack come down the pipeline and it had six songs in it including "Crazy Babies", "Diggin' Me Down", "I Don't Wanna Stop", "Let Me Hear You Scream", "No More Tears" and "Soul Sucker." We also already have access to Black Sabbath and Ozzy songs on game disks including “Paranoid” (RB 1) and “Crazy Train” (RB 3.)

Not counting the Black Sabbath knockoff tracks, I kind of expect to get one version (studio or live) of at least four to five of the below tracks from the re-released albums, with maybe a surprise or too tossed in.

“Crazy Train” (Live version on Diary of Madman re-release)
"Flying High Again" (Live on Diary of Madman re-release)
"Iron Man" (Black Sabbath cover Live on Diary of Madman re-release)
"Children Of The Grave" (Black Sabbath cover Live on Diary of Madman re-release)
"Paranoid" (Black Sabbath cover Live on Diary of Madman re-release)
"Mr. Crowley" (On Both albums, Live and studio versions)
"I Don't Know" (On Both albums, Live and studio versions)

A couple of songs not on either re-release that we are still waiting for include:

“Shot in the Dark”
“Mama, I’m Coming Home”
“Mr. Tinkertrain”
“Close my Eyes Forever” (duet with Lita Ford)
“See you on the Other Side”

What do you all think, and which songs would you like to see? Leave us a comment and let us know….

Lady Gaga and Foreigner invading Rock Band next week

by: Dan - - Add a Comment

Harmonix is bringing diversity to next week’s Rock Band DLC with a 3-pack of Lady Gaga, a couple of Foreigner classics and two new Pro Guitar/Bass updates for legacy RB dongs. We mentioned earlier this week that Lady Gaga was coming (which will probably get a lot of people excited), but we didn’t know what songs until today. Along with "Born This Way" (the new track that has been accused of ripping off “Madonna’s Express Yourself”), we will get “LoveGame” and “Paparazzi” off her The Fame album.

I personally am more excited about the Foreigner tracks and Pro Bass/Guitar upgrades due to that Classic Rock fan that is deep inside me. “Hot Blooded” and “Urgent” are staples in the Foreigner hit library and take me back to late night partying in college. The upgrades belong to Alice in Chain’s “Rooster” and The White Stripes “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.”

Individual songs will be $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per track, while the Lady Gaga Pack 02 will be $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts. The Pro Guitar/Bass upgrade for the Alice in Chains and White Stripes tunes will be $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts. The six new and two updated tracks will all be available on Monday, May 23rd. Here is the complete list:

New songs May 23rd:
Lady Gaga – “Born This Way”
Lady Gaga – “LoveGame”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”
Foreigner – “Hot Blooded” X
Foreigner – “Urgent” X

Pro Guitar Additions for Legacy Songs:
Alice in Chains – “Rooster”
The White Stripes – “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”

Tracks marked with “X” will include Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Harmonix teases the future of Rock Band

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
In an interview earlier this month with Game informer, Chris Rigopulos, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Harmonix, revealed some interesting tidbits about the Rock Band franchise, including future DLC artists, how many people are playing Rock Band and more. The entire interview is worth a read, as RB is arguably one of the premiere franchises in gaming right now despite the lull in the genre. Here are some key points from the interview:
  • All DLC released in early 2011 was selected while Harmonix was still part of MTV Games. Going forward, it will be Harmonix alone, and “I doubt you will see any more SpongeBob SquarePants packs” according to Rigopulos.
  • May DLC will include previously released Foo Fighters as well as Lady Gaga and more Ozzy Osbourne.
  • Ozzy is rereleasing Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz at the end of May, so it’s a good bet the DLC tracks will come from those two albums
  • There are 900 artists with over 2,700 songs in the DLC catalog right now.
  • Almost 5 million accounts have downloaded at least 1 Rock Band DLC song
  • Over 1 million unique users log in monthly to play Rock Band
  • Rock Band 3 retail disc price was recently cut to $19.99
  • No Rock Band 4 in 2011 (we already knew this), but they are working on developing new ideas and concepts for the future
It sounds like Harmonix isn’t planning on letting the DLC go any time soon, and some of those Guitar Hero exclusives may be freeing up in the near future to open up a whole bunch of new artists to the game.  They also will have a group of folks out at E3, so we could see some announcements at the various press events or in the booths.

Classic Pantera (and a little Frampton) will be hitting Rock Band DLC next week

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
It should be a good week for both classic rock and metal heads, as a four-pack of Pantera tracks and Peter Frampton’s iconic live version of “Do you Feel Like We Do” will make their way to the Rock Band DLC catalog. The Pantera tracks were off their early 1990’s albums Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven. The Frampton track needs no introduction, as it was the crown jewel off 1976’s Frampton Comes Alive! No word on whether Harmonix will be authorizing a new guitar effects pedal so you can recreate the voice box effect that is so distinct to the song.

Costs will be the standard $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts per track, $6.99/560 MS Pts/700 Wii Pts for the Pantera Pack 01 and $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for the Pro Guitar/Bass upgrade.

  • Pantera – “5 Minutes Alone” X
  • Pantera – “I’m Broken”
  • Pantera – “Mouth for War”
  • Pantera – “Walk” X
  • Peter Frampton – “Do you Feel Like We Do (Live)”
X – Eligible for Pro Guitar/Pro Bass Upgrade

Tracks will be available on Thursday, May 19th instead of the usually Tuesday release date. [READ MORE]

Goodbye productivity, hello Angry Birds in my browser

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
We all knew that it was going to happen eventually... today is the day that Angry Birds becomes available for play in the comfort of our internet browser. Well, that is at least if you are using Google’s Chrome browser...

Rovio and Google announced today that Angry Birds is now available on the Chrome App. The announcement was made at today’s I/O presentation and the game was released following the conclusion of today’s presentation. The version available on the store, for free no less (without ads), runs directly inside the Google Chrome browser with both standard definition and high definition modes, depending on your PC.

I have played the game on my iPod Touch... then my Android phone... and now it is running in my browser. Let’s face it, the game is just plain addicting and like many of Popcap’s offerings, one that you can play over and over and over on nearly every platform available. In celebration, enjoy a cover of the Angry Birds theme song by the indie band Pomplamoose:
