Modern Warfare 3/Call of Duty: Ghosts tech smackdown

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Does anyone else find the poor German Shepard all kitted out for battle in the new Call of Duty: Ghosts trailer a bit disconcerting?  I swear that I saw a laser gun on its back.  I don't normally have strong feelings when it come to animal rights, but well-trained dogs don't exactly excel in the free will department.  That dog, and the real dogs its based on, are basically combat slaves with the emotions of infant children.  Maybe now thanks to the new graphics tech the Xbox One wields, even dogs have entered the Uncanny Valley.

Whatever, it sure did look impressive, right?  I guess that's all that matters in this particular context.  You can see the full battle-dog comparison, along with battle-human, and battle-jungle comparisons in the following Modern Warfare 3/COD: Ghosts comparison trailer.

GTA V pre-order details

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Besides BioWare RPGs, no upcoming new release makes me want to enter cryogenic stasis more than a Rockstar open-world title. GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption sit right up there with my favorite games of all time, and I have no reason to expect that GTA V will be the title that lets me down.  What GTA IV had that sucked me in was a strong sense of place, and I can feel that same sense of place oozing out of Grand Theft Auto V's screenshots.  That's like getting a sunburn from your buddy's vacation photos.

It's really too bad that the nitrogen-flux matrix on my cryostasis machine blew out the last time I tried to use it.  Thank the Maker I was only testing it on the neighbor's cat.  The neighbors weren't happy, but at least I didn't need someone to explain to my children why their daddy was now an empty husk.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic....  Rockstar has announced a GTA V Special and Collectors Edition and revealed their details along with pre-order bonuses.

The GTA V Special Edition will include the full game (natch), a SteelBook filled with exclusive artwork, a Blueprint Map of Los Santos and Blaine County, the Stunt Plane Trial mini-game, bonus outfits, new weapons, and the three playable characters, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, will receive a boost to the recharge rate on their special ability meter.

The GTV V Special Edition will run you a cool $79.99.

The GTA V Collector's Edition includes everything in the Special Edition plus a GTA V Security Deposit Bag with Logo Key inspired by the in-game heists, a GTA V 9FIFTY Snapback Cap from New Era, custom characters to use online, unique vehicles and an in-game garage to store them in, and the game will come in a collectible outer box with the GTA V logo foil embosses across its surface and a matte, scuff-resistant film lamination.

The GTA V Collector's Edition will run you an even cooler $149.99.

Finally, everyone who pre-orders the standard game, Special Edition, or the Collector's Edition will get the in-game ability to pilot the Atomic Blimp.

You can pre-order them starting now right up until GTA V's September 17 release date or while supplies last.

First PC screens for Mortal Kombat look as good as you would expect

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Finally, oh finally, NetherRealm is answering the call of its fans and releasing Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition for the PC. We knew that already thanks to Nathan, but now we are getting our first glimpse at the project and it pretty much looks exactly like you would expect. The PC version of the game will likely be the best looking version to date, depending on the strength of your system of course. However, that isn’t why I am excited: I can’t wait to see what the PC gaming community does with the game when they get their hands on it. Whether mods are officially supported or not, you know that the crafty PC gamers are going to find a means of manipulating the game’s content (just look at Street Fighter IV).

Anyways, look for the game later this Summer and check out what you have to look forward to below:

Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition coming to PC later this year

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
If you frequent Mortal Kombat forums like I do, you would know that Mortal Kombat fans have essentially been begging Netherealm Studios to release a PC version of 2011's Mortal Kombat since it was released. They have signed petitions and have tweeted Netherealm Studios relentlessly hoping for a PC version. Well guys, your hard work has paid off as Warner Brothers have announced that a PC version of Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition will be released later this year.

The Komplete Edition comes packed with the four extra DLC characters Skarlet, Rain, Kenshi and Freddy Krueger along with 15 Klassic Mortal Kombat skins and three Klassic Fatalities for Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Ermac.

The Komplete Edition of Mortal Kombat is coming to PC's digitally on July 3rd and a physical retail version will be released on August 6th for Windows PC.

For more information be sure to check out their official website, their Facebook page, and their Twitter.

DLC and season pass is coming to Metro: Last Light

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
I haven't played Metro: Last Light yet.  I wasn't a big fan of the first game's stealth and swarming melee enemies.  But many of you have no doubt already saved Moscow from a Nazi-monster invasion (That's what happens, right?).  If you're one of those people, and think your Metro: Last Light experience is over then you obviously need to swap out the air filter in your gas mask because the fumes are getting to you.  Metro: Last Light is getting a series of single-player dlc and a season pass so you can get it all at a modest discount.  It also grants players a new semi-automatic shotgun called the Abzats whose secondary fire mode fires six shells at once.

The Faction Pack and Chronicles Pack expand the Metro: Last Light story.  The Tower Pack adds solo challenges.  Finally, the Developer Pack gives players new tools to explore post-apocalyptic Moscow.

The season pass, available right now for download from Xbox Live, the PSN, and Steam, costs $14.99/1200 MSP.  The first dlc pack will be out in June.

EA Sports ignites next-gen sports on Xbox One

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
The Ignite engine is EA Sport's next-gen sports engine.  It got its first big introduction yesterday as part of the whole Xbox One (boy, that sure is nicer to type than "Xbox 360") announcement.  It upgrades rendering, physics, animations, artificial intelligence, locomotion, and pretty much everything else that makes an EA Sports game what it is.

The four titles announced that will take advantage of Ignite are Madden NFL 25, FIFA Soccer 14, NBA Live 14, and EA Sports UFC.  In these games, Ignite will allow the AI-controlled players to make more natural decisions, ostensibly the decisions an actual human would make.  Ignite can handle four times the calculations per second which, ideally, means faster decision-making at the very least.  Ignite can also handle 10-times the animations that previous engines could.  I don't even think I need to explain that one.

Anyway, you can watch the following video for some idea what next-gen games using Ignite will look like.

For full details, follow the jump.  You can also find EA Sports on the web and Facebook and get all the lastest news at ea.com/news.  You can also visit Madden 25, FIFA 14, NBA 14, and EA Sports UFC on the web.

Call of Duty: Ghosts reveal trailer

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
Today’s Xbox ONE reveal conference was capped off with the worldwide premiere of the first, official trailer for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts. From what was explained at the conference and what I gather from the trailer, it appears as though the United States has fallen to a foreign enemy and the game will chronicle the tale of a group of American freedom fighters known as Ghosts who are striking back. Does anyone else get a Homefront vibe? Not that such a vibe would be a bad thing...

You can check out the full trailer below and look forward to the game this November:

Kevin Conroy WON'T be voicing Batman in Arkham Origins

by: John - - Add a Comment
Over the weekend, I wrote about Kevin Conroy at the Dallas Comic Con talking about Batman: Arkham Origins. Now, I mistakenly assumed that meant he was back voicing the Dark Knight himself. Looks like I was wrong.

Kevin is working on the game, but the capacity is unknown as Roger Craig Smith is going to provide the voice for Batman, as reported by Superhero Hype. At least Kevin's working on the game in some capacity. but we are getting a new voice for young Bruce Wayne.

The trailer today is pretty cool and I'm still looking forward to the game. I'm not as hung up on the original voice as some folks, as I just want a solid game.

Love the Unreal games? How about five for only $10?

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
It's been a while since I've fired up Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition.  In fact, the last PC I played it on had Windows ME on it (yeah, kind of sad...in more ways than one).  I noticed that Steam has an Unreal Deal, but I've been waiting for it to go on sale before picking it up.  Needless to say, the wait has paid off.

From now until May 27th, you can pick up the Unreal Deal on Steam for a mere $10.  What does that get you?
  • Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition
  • Unreal Tournament III Black
  • Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition
  • Unreal Gold
  • Unreal 2: The Awakening
I've only played UT: GotY and Unreal 2, both of which I enjoyed.  However, never playing the other three, plus the fact that it's only $10, was more than enough for me to pick this up.

First trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins and information about the Deathstroke pre-order pack.

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
I've heard mixed thoughts from fans about Batman: Arkham Origins. Some love the idea and want to discover the origins of our favorite caped crime fighter, while others want the story to continue and couldn't care less about his origins. In any case Batman: Arkham Origins is coming later this year and we have the first trailer for you along with information about the Deathstroke pack for people who pre-order.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be going back in time several years before the events of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Gotham City's most dangerous criminals are on their rise to power and a young and inexperienced Batman faces defining moments on his way to becoming The Dark Knight.

Those who pre-order the game will also get early access to the Deathstroke pack. The Deathstroke pack will contain Deathstroke as a playable character for challenge maps, two additional challenge maps and two alternate Deathstroke skins.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be released worldwide on October 25th for the 360, PS3, Wii-U, and PC's. The game will release along with Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate for Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita.

Some other good news is that it appears Kevin Conroy will be back to voice Batman in Arkham Origins. I know a lot of people were disappointed when they learned he wouldn't return.

Be sure to check out the trailer below!

Now Loading for the week of May 20, 2013: Better Late Than Never Edition

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
The moral of this week’s story is everything old being new again, or various systems getting caught up with the times. There are a lot of re-releases and updated ports hitting the market this week including the return of Donkey Kong Country, and HD version of the 3DS Resident Evil, and the Wii U getting a couple of titles a few months late. Not everything is familiar though so take your pick from the long list of games launching this week.

My picks for the week include:

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: Rave reviews have been pouring in for this 3DS port of the now-classic Wii title Donkey Kong Country Returns. This is an updated port of the Wii game from 2010 which was an original adventure, not an update to the SNES classic. Once again, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are out to stop the theft of bananas on their island. The game has been credited with being an incredibly challenging platformer that pays great homage to the genre and sets the standard for future ones. If you own a 3DS, you will definitely want to pick this one up.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Action RPG fans have a treat coming to the PC this week with NeocoreGames’ The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. The game is perhaps best compared to Torchlight, as I mentioned in my recent preview, but has plenty to love in its own right. This is an exciting adventure that you can experience alone or with up to four friends cooperatively. Between loot gathering, experimenting with the game’s alchemy system, and an engaging world that is a combination of steampunk and goth-noir, this one should keep you busy for a long, long time

Resident Evil Revelations: Wow, this is a new concept: an HD port of a portable game! That is exactly what Capcom has done with the former 3DS-exclusive entry in the Resident Evil series. Revelations has gotten the full HD-makeover for its outing on the home consoles including updated visuals, Achievement / Trophy support, and at least on the Wii U, a plethora of new features that make use of the Wii U’s unique control pad. The reviews have been positive thus far, including our own (Wii U, PC), and the reception of the original was much higher than that of Resident Evil 6.

The full lineup for this week includes:

The Last of Us will be available for digital download on launch day

by: John - - Add a Comment
June 14th isn't only the day after E3 2013 ends, but it's also the release date for The Last of Us from Naughty Dog. Now, you can head to your favorite store to pick it up, but there's going to be one other option.

The Last of Us is going to be available as a digital download purchase(Game Informer) that day as well. Now, the game's going to be huge but you won't have to sit through the entire download to start playing. As soon as it gets done downloading half of the game, you'll be able to start playing. While it's not the immediate start that we want, it's still a lot better than waiting for the entire game to be installed.

What I would love to see is a pre-load option like we do on Steam. That way, all Sony really needs to do is to activate the game from their servers and you'll be ready to go.

Five seconds of Call of Duty: Ghosts

by: John - - Add a Comment
In two days, you'll see the full preview of Call of Duty: Ghosts along with the reveal of the next Xbox. For now, you can check out five seconds of the game as a work in progress. A lot of what you'll see are wireframe models and a quick shot of the dev tools that are used to create a character. While not too much, it's there to whet your appetite for more but thankfully it's just a few days away. You can check out the Vine video here.

Kevin Conroy back as the voice of Batman for Arkham Origins?

by: John - - Add a Comment
There have been reports that the most famous voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, wouldn't be back to voice the titular character in Batman: Arkham Origins. That had some fans a tad bit disappointed.

Well, that may not be true. Kevin was at the Dallas Comic Con over the weekend and he had a panel. During the panel, he says that he IS going to be voicing Batman for Arkham Origins. Now, there's no official word yet, but if it comes from the voice actor himself, you can probably take that to the bank. Check out Kevin himself talking about the game.

Learn about the music of The Last of Us and the composer behind it

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
While we're all waiting for The Last of Us to be launched next month, Naughty Dog has recently released a new video that talks about the music from the game with the composer himself, Gustavo Santaolalla.  Santaolalla has done some work in the film industry winning multiple awards for his music in multiple movies such as Babel and Brokeback Mountain, yet he has never composed any music for a video game until now.  Just by listening to the music in the video, the soundtrack sounds pretty good.

If you're interested in hearing more of the music from The Last of Us, you have three options.  First, you can head over to the SoundCloud page for the game.  Next, you can purchase the soundtrack via CD over on Amazon for about $13.  Finally, those who pre-order the game via the Sights & Sounds DLC pack you'll receive a digital copy of the soundtrack.

By pressing the button below, you are certifying that you are 18 years old or older and you are of age to view the content.

Gran Turismo 6 coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 later

by: John - - Add a Comment
Sony gamers who love cars love the Gran Turismo series. It's been the defacto racing simulator for many years now. In fact, the series is celebrating 15 years, which is a pretty great feat.

Gran Turismo 6 is coming and it'll be coming out for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. PS3 will get first crack at playing the game, but expect a PS4 version later on down the road. Vita folks aren't going to be left out here either as a version for the portable will also be forth coming.

1,200 cars, 71 course layouts, 33 locations, and more through DLC will give you plenty of choices to play with. For now, check out the announcement trailer and gaze at some of the beautifully rendered cars that you'll be able to drive yourself when the game hits the store shelves.
