Arcade classic Dig Dug turns 30 this month

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
As time goes on, we keep hitting up on some milestone anniversaries of classic games that some of us enjoyed in our childhood.  While I didn't get a chance to play too many arcade games when I was younger, Dig Dug is a game that went beyond the arcade.  I don't believe the US got the original game on the NES (I think that was only in Japan on the Famicom), we did get it's sequel Dig Dug II.  Since then we've had numerous other releases, both downloadable and physical, and multiple ports of the original arcade game, mainly on Namco game collections.  Even today I'll pull out either Dig Dug II on the NES or Dig Dug: Digging Strike on the DS to pass the time, or even fire up the original if I have it available.  A simple game, yet one still played today.  If you have a chance to pick this one up, you can probably find a version of it on whatever system you own today...well, just about anyway.

Konami was ready to reboot Silent Scope (note “was”)

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
According information dug up by Silconera, Konami was very close to rebooting the classic arcade-sniper game Silent Scope. The title was being worked on by Day 1 Studios, the same developers who crafted F3AR. Although the game was Silent Scope in name, it wasn’t a first-person-snipe game like the games before it.

Supposedly, the game was intended to be a stealth-based 3rd person shooter. The game, which was in development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, was canceled back in December, prior to ever being officially announced or revealed by Konami.

I am always saddened to see games canceled before they even begin to achieve their potential, or are even given a chance to. Silent Scope was really fun series and the concept was ripe for being fleshed out into a deeper game. I guess that all that we can do now is browse the concept art that was dug up and imagine what could have been.

Angry Birds – International Superstar

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
My son loves Angry Birds.  He loves playing the games on the iPhone, he has four stuffed animals, the board game and several shirts.  But what he doesn’t have is access to an Angry Birds store like the people of Finland now do.  Anyone traveling through the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in Finland can browse through and pick up some sweet Angry Birds gear without having to scour the internet.  Take a look below, and next time you are traveling through Helsinki, pick me up  one of those Big Brother stuffed birds.

The Angry Birds finally have something to be happy about

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
There's no way to tell who really had a merry Christmas this year and who didn't; however, I do know someone that did: Roxio, the developers of casual mega-hit, Angry Birds.  6.5 million people downloaded Angry Birds on December 25.  Apparently almost everyone in THE ENTIRE ******* WORLD that got a smartphone for Christmas (there were 6.8 million smartphone activations that day as well) downloaded Angry Birds (and I admit that I was one of those people, albeit for an iPod Touch rather than a smartphone).  Can any game claim such an adoption rate?  Granted, Angry Birds is cheap, or even free, and easy to obtain, but still, that's pretty impressive.

Rush sends off Rock Band DLC in 2011 with 2112

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Last week I thought we had heard the last of the Rock Band DLC for 2011, but apparently Harmonix had one more ace up their sleeve and Xbox 360 owners get a timed exclusive as well.

Back in the 1970’s, rock bands used to take time to carefully craft massive rock operas that became legendary in status.  One of those was Rush’s 1976 album 2112, which featured the 20-minute, seven-part suite for which the album was named.  Harmonix is bring us that momentous song as the very first Rock Band 3 DLC in 2012 in the form a three-part download.  Part one has “Overture” and “The Temple of Syrinx”, Part 2 has “Discovery” and “Presentation” and Part 3 has “Oracle: The Dream,” “Soliloquy” and “Grand Finale.”

The price will be $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for the “Rush ‘2112’” pack, $1.99/150 MS Pts/200 Wii per song and the usual $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade.

Available on Xbox 360 on December 31, 2011 and PlayStation 3/Wii on January 3rd, 2012
Rush – “2112: Overture, The Temple of Syrinx” X
Rush – “2112: Discovery, Presentation” X
Rush – “2112: Oracle: The Dream, Soliloquy, Grand Finale” X
Tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

At The Disco, Sublime With Rome and Travie Mccoy.  All of the artists are under the Fueled by Ramen banner, so it’s not like Harmonix just cobbled together a hodge-podge of leftovers like last year.  Five of the songs (sans Paramore’s “Pressure”) will have keyboard support, while two will have Pro Guitar/Bass upgrade.

PS3 owners will have to wait for the new year though, as only Wii and 360 players will get the tracks on December 27th, with PS3 owners getting them on January 3rd 2012.

Each song will cost $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts, while the whole “Fueled By Ramen 01” pack can be yours for $9.99/800 MS Pts/1000 Wii Pts.  Pro Guitar/Bass upgrade will be the usual $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts.  Check out the tracks by the artists below:

Rush highlights next week’s Rock Band DLC

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
Harmonix is bringing us a three-pack of Rush tracks along with a track each from Danish Rocker Volbeat and Black Veil Brides to Rock Band 3 next week.  Continuing the trend we saw with the Queen announcement, two of the Rush tracks will have keyboard support ( “Caravan” and “The Spirit of Radio (Live).”  I personally am more interested in the one that doesn’t, which is 1975’s “Fly By Night”.  I don’t know much about the other two groups or tracks, but I am sure there is a fan rejoicing somewhere.  If you like your metal quick and heavy, you may want to take a listen to them.

Pricing will be $5.49/440 MS Pts/550 Wii Pts for “Rush Pack 01” and the usual $1.99/160 MS Pts/200 Wii Pts for the individual Rush songs and the Pro Guitar/Bass upgrade.  For the other two tracks, they are priced at $0.99/80 MS Pts/100 Wii Pts per track.

Available on December 13th, 2011:
Rush – “Fly by Night” X
Rush – “Caravan” O
Rush – “The Spirit of Radio (Live)” X O
Black Veil Brides – “Rebel Love Song
Volbeat – “A Warrior’s Call
Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Rush fans have a present to look forward to, as the release also mentions that more Rush/Rock Band news is coming before the year ends.  It would imagine it has something to do with their upcoming 19th studio album Clockwork Angels which is slated for an early 2012 release.

TwitchTV comes to the iPhone

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment
If you're a regular watcher of TwitchTV you'll be happy to hear that now you can tune into your favorite eSports matches on your iPhone. The new app streams all of the TwitchTV matches directly to the tablet in HD, with a full suite of search options so you can find exactly which competition you're looking for, recent or otherwise.

While I'm sure TwitchTV has the best intentions, this is kind of an odd marriage in my opinion. The Extra Credits people already did a great episode on why pro gaming has a ways to go before it's a legitimate spectator sport, so I won't bother repeating their excellent analysis here.

Pro gaming hurdles aside, I really don't think that the iPhone (or any of Apple's portables for that matter) and pro gaming really go together, or at least their audiences don't overlap much. The iPhone might work well for casual fare but the combination of Apple's proprietary stranglehold on the portable severely limiting its capabilities and the touch-only interface are simply not conducive to most forms of video games. It's going to take a fully featured 4G tablet with dedicated game controls, a keyboard and a touch pad--kind of a DS/laptop/tablet Frankenstein on steroids--before we truly have the end-all of portable gaming. Until then, I'll stick with a DS or Vita for more immersive gaming on the go.

Steve Jobs passes…

by: Dan - - Add a Comment
There really isn’t much I can add other than to say that the technology industry lost a visionary, pioneer and technology driver today. While I didn’t always agree with the way Apple went about their business and how the company carried itself, I thought highly of their personal wireless devices such as the Pod, iPad and iPhone, each of which revolutionized its genre.

ABC News has a well written piece on Jobs and his life that I would recommend reading.

The Apple website has the photo below on its home page as a memorial to its fallen leader....

Rest in peace Steve.
