New Pro Cycling Manager - Tour de France 2008 images

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
For whatever reason, the artist that penned the "Le Tour de France" logo in the lower right hand corner of the box art managed to make it look like "Le deTour France."  Which is neither here nor there, though this year's Pro Cycling Manager - Tour de France 2008 will certainly travel through the painstakingly recreated race.  (I'm also recalling Russel Crowe in A Good Year in which he'd always drive by the French cyclists, honking his horn, flipping them off, and yelling out "Laaance Aaaarmstrong!")  Again, neither here nor there.  We've got five new screenshots from developer Cyanide Studio.

Clock in more TimeShift with free Futures-Past Multiplayer Map Pack DLC

by: Randy - - Comments (2)
The altogether average TimeShift released a free pack of multiplayer maps, available via Xbox LIVE as of May 7th.  The five new maps, entitled "Futures-Past Multiplayer Map Pack," sport One-on-One, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch modes, naturally, but TimeShift "reveals the future of multiplayer fragging" with its exclusive King of Time and Meltdown Madness modes.  More details back at the official TimShift site.

BioWare comes to senses, won't authenticate Mass Effect every 10 days

by: John - - Comments (0)
It's nice to see a company listen to the consumers for once. While I can understand BioWare wanted to protect Mass Effect from pirates, the way being done would've only hindered consumers. They've now gone the route of letting you install the game on three PCs with more on a case by case basis with one DVD. Also, the game will only authenticate on install and when downloading new content. That's it. Good way to go I say and let's hope we see something about Spore doing the same thing as well in the near future.

-Update- And Spore gets the same treatment.

New Alone in the Dark website is very dark, you are likely to be eaten by a grue

by: Chuck - - Comments (3)
Atari has launched a new website for Alone in the Dark which allows you to explore the world of the game before it hits shelves.  With the company being delisted this from the NASDAQ this week it's hard to underestimate how important this game is to the company.  What I've seen looks really good but it remains to be seen if the final product will be enough to help turn the company around.

Gaming Gibs for 5/9/2008

by: Chuck - - Comments (1)
Here are a few things I missed while watching the first seven minutes of Speed Racer:
  • Law of the land talks about how to create real video game legislation
  • Activision is shelving the Tony Hawk series for this year, it's amazing what competition can do
  • No video game tie-ins for Indiana Jones or Batman, this isn't necessarily a bad thing
  • Aaron Goldberg trashes the PS3, RROD of irony escapes without notice
  • Silicon Knights talks about the Mana system in Too Human
  • Bizzare Creations is no longer doing DLC for Project Gotham Racing 4, up to Microsoft for new content

New Age of Conan screens

by: Dan - - Comments (1)
Funcom and Eidos released eight new in-game screens for Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. Every time I see new screens, this MMORPG seems to look better and better. The screens are from the Poitain area.

PC getting Burnout

by: John - - Comments (0)
This is interesting. Looks like Electronic Arts is going to be putting the console hit Burnout Paradise on the PC. Not only that but it's going to be rebuilt specifically for the PC. Don't know what that entails yet but I'm wondering if this won't be another test bed for their new copy protection scheme with SecuRom. With all the peripherals available for the PC, you can build a pretty kicking rig to race around the city. [READ MORE]

Would you kindly not be the next Uwe Boll?

by: John - - Comments (1)
Looks like the BioShock movie has a better than expected director. Gore Verbinski is set to direct what he hopes to be an R-rated BioShock movie and I think it's a good choice. The guy turned a theme park ride into one great movie and two OK movies. The game's ripe with great imagery and should produce some incredible set pieces so we just need a good translation of the story here.  Just as long as they change the ending. Just kidding. I threw that in there to poke Cyril a little. :) Anyways, Gore seems to be into video games as there's a little tidbit in an interview alluding to interest in a Portal movie.Who would you want to play the roles?

Projectile Dysfunction got you down? Take Stroyent today!

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Activision and id Software are taking a much more humorous approach to their new official site in support of the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars console release.  The 2-in-1 health and ammo of the Strogg Race, Stroyent, gets one of those warm, sunny commercials dealing honestly with the problem of Projectile Dysfunction.

Thou Shall Not Pass!

by: John - - Comments (0)
The folks at Pandemic Studios are working to bring hobbits, orcs, and Balrogs to life as they have just announced The Lord of the Rings: Conquest today. This time around you'll be able to join the evil forces of Sauron instead of playing as the good guys only. Some images of the game can be found on the official website but June 20th will be the date that you'll get to see game footage on GT TV. I'd really like to see how the game works taking the part of a Cave-troll or the Balrog.  With the recent announcement that Ian McKellem is set to reprise his role of Gandalf for the two Hobbit movies, there seems to be a good amount of Tolkien news coming about these days. Here are a few things I missed while checking if my ISP was throttling my bandwidh:
  • The Analog Gamer is back with a D&D Bar Fighting game...I'd kick ass my with +4 Tankard of ass kicking brew
  • Totilo wonders if reviewers needs to finish games, the overhype of Bioshock comes to mind
  • GameSetWatch looks at the good, the bad, and the kind of ugly of the PlayStation Network.
  • The NES re-imagined
  • Ars Technica examines how Activision will still be milking the ESA even though it's not paying dues anymore

Looking for a few good Sea Men

by: Nathan - - Comments (1)
Shrapnel Games is looking for a few good testers. Open Beta testing for their game War Plan Pacific is starting soon. The game is PC based war strategy goodness that takes place in a war torn World War II era Pacific ocean. The game is mostly Naval warfare but I wouldn't be surprised if there were perhaps some mini strategy games where the action focuses on the capturing small islands since taking islands was key in the Pacific. Details on who qualifies and how to sign up for the open beta after the jump. [READ MORE]

Come talk video games tonight in Columbus

by: Chuck - - Comments (5)
If you live in Columbus and can pry yourself away from Grand Theft Auto IV for 90 minutes you might want to head down to Columbus State's Nestor Hall Auditorium from 6-7:30 to listen to a panel talking about video games as the Convergence of Art and Technology.  The Q&A panel will feature several smart people as well as one idiot from a local video game website (me).  The topics will range from the morals and ethics of video games to ARG's and more.  The panel will open up to the public at some point so you can ask me fun pointed questions that I will answer with vague yet satisfying answers.

There's also the Downtown Digital Arts festival going on which will be open before and during the panel.  Thanks to the Fuse Factory for inviting me to participate.

Major DOFUS update scheduled for Fall 2008

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
With a beta version planned for September -- around its first anniversary -- the tactical (and free to play) flash MMORPG, DOFUS, is about to go DOFUS 2.0 this fall.  The code's been completely rewritten to exhibit greater fluidity of movement, over 2,000 animations revamped, 10,000 maps entirely redrawn, and sharper communication with game servers.  If the isometric view and Eastern animation art style are your cup of Oolong tea, than DOFUS is ready to welcome you. Return to The Lords of the Rings Online for free this weekend

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
If you've given up on The Lords of the Rings Online then Turbine wants you back and to help convince you they are worth the monthly fee they are having a free weekend of play for all previous subscribers.  Starting tomorrow (May 8th) and running through Monday (May 12th) previous subscribers will be able to hop back on and check out all the new content in the game.

I have to wonder how effective these schemes are.  I was big into City of Heroes for a while before I gave up on the game after getting into way too much XP debt.  I re-installed and re-played the game during one of NC Soft's free weekends and while I enjoyed the experience I managed to sink my main character even further into XP debt and swore off the game for good.  What do you think?  Would a free weekend of a play ever entice you to re-install and re-play a MMO that you've given up on? Inon Zur (bless you) to score Fallout 3

by: Chuck - - Comments (2)
Bethesda announced today that Inon Zur will be developing the score for Fallout 3.  Mr. Zur has provided the score for other video games like Crysis, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, and Exteel and brings a lot of experience to the table.  You can listen to a few samples of his work at his website which should help get you stoked for Fallout's release later this year. NVIDIA says we need to simplify

by: John - - Comments (0)
For those purchasing hardware, you know how confusing it can be sometimes to know what video card is right for you. NVIDIA's looking to simplify this a little bit so they can be more consumer friendly. I think both AMD and NVIDIA need to take this initiative so as to not confuse people out there looking for new video cards for their system. I have an idea for NVIDIA. Stick with the GeForce name and keep your number scheme. It's at 9xxx series right now and I know that 9600 cards aren't going to perform as well as 9800 cards. That's not bad. Now get rid of the letters at the end signifying the line and just use normal words like Basic, Premium, and Hardcore. Or go the Stabucks route and use Tall, Grande, and Venti. Ok maybe not that but use simple words instead of cryptic letters to designate what type of audience your product is aimed at.

Doom 4 announced, they mostly come out at night...mostly

by: Chuck - - Comments (1)
There aren't a lot of details yet but id Software has announced that they are working on Doom 4.  I'm guessing the game will be using some version of the engine that's powering Rage and that we'll be shooting demons, imps, and undead marines once again.  Hopefully id learned some things from Doom 3 and we'll actually get decent plot development, weapons with flashlights on them, and fewer monster closets.

Help stop Uwe Boll, get gum!

by: John - - Comments (1)
Besides games, I love movies and it hurts to see both of them get bastardized by Uwe Boll. The guy makes bad movies period and on top of that he makes bad movies based on some good video games. You'd think companies would learn not to sign off on the deal to give him the ability to turn their creations into horrible wastes of time. Word is if StopUweBoll.org gets 1 million signatures, he'll stop making movies. To help achieve that goal, Stridge Gum has said they would provide one free coupon for a pack of their gum to each individual who signs the petition should the 1 million mark be reached between May 7th and 14th 2008. So what are you waiting for? Go sign the petition and chew bubble gum. If you sign it you won't be out of bubble gum. [READ MORE]

Gaming Gibs for 5/7/2008

by: Chuck - - Comments (1)
Here are a few things I missed while remembering that knowing is half the battle:
  • Despite no real evidence, Variety wonders if Activision had something to do with the delay of Prototype
  • Wii Fit to usher in a whole new generation of body issues for it's users
  • Game design lessons from the Crysis team, no advice on how to afford a machine to play the game though
  • This is kind of old but if you get a red ring on your 360 and want better service then you should check out this advice piece from the Consumerist
  • MTV tries to make some sense of the increasing number of perfect scores in games and wonders if we need new standards

First look at Far Cry 2

by: John - - Comments (0)
If you're itching to see some Far Cry 2 action, well the video below will give you the first glimpse and some information about the game. It's not being made by the same folks who did the first one so we'll see how the people at Ubisoft Montreal  I have to say that by visiting Africa and camping outside to do research takes some guts so I hope they got some great experiences and translate that into the game.
