Read about the development and drama that went into Titanfall

Geoff Keighley has produced another piece on the development of a highly touted video game. The Final Hours of Titanfall is a look at behind the scenes on what it took to get Titanfall out and all the pitfalls along the way the team experienced.

You'll get some more story on why one of the co-founders of Respawn Entertainment, Jason West, left the company. While the official word was for family reasons, the lawsuit brought forth by Activision and how it affected his relationship with the rest of the team was a big factor in his decision to leave. 

Also, the game was almost cancelled because Respawn ran out of money. It took Microsoft to come in to save the game from extinction. 

There's plenty more and you can pick it up for the iPad, PC/Mac, or a native Windows 8 app for $1.99.

PSN Update 1.70 lets you create and share videos easily and allows for pre-loading of games

The PlayStation 4 will be getting update 1.70 soon and Sony has given some details on what's in release on their blog. Coming to the PlayStation 4 is the Share Factory. This little piece of software will let you edit your saved video clips with features such as transitions, commentary, and music. The software looks fairly intuitive and will allow you to use your own music as well as the included ones as well. 

Finally, the update will allow people who pre-order games to pre-load the game onto their system ahead of time. This feature is something that's a god send on platforms like Steam allowing people to play the game the second it's launched. Being able to purchase a game and have it pre-load days before is an extremely helpful feature and one I'm glad to see come to the PlayStation 4.

Wake up Kumbakharna, It's time for battle!

New patch for SMITE and with it brings the first Hindu Guardian, Kumbakharna, to the game. 

Kumbakharna has an interesting passive as when he runs out of health, he doesn't die. Instead of dying, Kumbakharna sleeps. If he is hit with 6 basic attacks, he will die. If not, he awakens with 25% health and mana. This can only happen every 240 seconds to keep it balanced. 

Here is a rundown of his abilities. 

  • Kumbhakarna does not die when he reaches 0 health, instead he falls asleep. He will awaken after 8s at 25% health and mana, unless hit with 6 basic attacks (+1 every 5 levels) while sleeping. This passive has a 240s cooldown.
  • Throw Back
    Kumbhakarna sleepily runs forward. If he hits an enemy he stops and deals 70/140/210/280/350 +50% of his magical power as damage. If the enemy is a minion, he throws them, and the flying minion deals 90/160/230/300/370 + 60% of his magical power as damage to each enemy it passes through. Cooldown 15s. Cost 60/65/70/75/80.
  • Groggy Strike
    Kumbhakarna rears back for a heavy smash that roots enemies for 1.5s and deals 50/90/130/170/210 +50% of his magical power as damage. Cooldown 10s. Cost 50/55/60/65/70.
  • Mighty Yawn
    Kumbhakarna lets out a mighty yawn that mezes all enemies in range for 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5s. If awakened early from mez, enemies are slowed 40% for 1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2s. Kumbhakarna may use this ability while asleep. Cooldown 15s. Cost 70/75/80/85/90.
  • Epic Uppercut
    Kumbhakarna moves forward a short distance, stopping at the first enemy god he encounters, and delivers a massive melee swing that knocks the enemy directly up into the air for 2.2s. When the enemy god lands, it deals 300/400/500/600/700 +50% of his magical power as AOE damage to itself and Kumbhakarna’s foes, and causes Knockback. Cooldown 60s. Cost 100.

Also included in this patch is the Scarlet Coven skin for Isis, and as a Isis player, I am very excited about this. 

Finally, the new free god rotation is Aphrodite, Sobek, Chaac, Apollo and Thanatos.

Wargame Red Dragon combat will make you dizzy in this pre-launch day video

This video is nuts. Just ahead of tomorrow's launch day, Wargame Red Dragon doesn't pull any punches in this frightening showcase of global military machines. It's jets, it's helicopters, it's tanks, it's ships—it's straight up mayhem. Doomsday might look something kind of like this video. And while the trailer would run too long if it featured all 1,450 of the game's unit types, it does its level best to give you a runner's high of modern warfare imagery.

Wargame Red Dragon launches tomorrow, April 17, on PC, leaving you only a few hours to snag that 25 percent off sale on Steam.


PlayStation 4 hits the 7 million units sold mark

It's been just over a month since the PlayStation 4 hit 6 million units and the system is showing no signs of slowing down as Sony announced today that the system has hit the 7 million unit mark worldwide.

That's a pretty impressive feat and it's nice to see the system continuing to sell so well.  I imagine that the release of Infamous: Second Son helped keep things going for Sony.  At this rate the system will hit 10 million units right after E3.


PAX East 2014: Hands on with Project Cyber

I have always been a fan of futuristic, cyber punk style sports. Smash TV, Super Monday Night Combat, Blast Chamber, Deathrow, The Grid, hell even TV show American Gladiators could somewhat fit into that category, it's its a genre and art style that I have always loved, so whenever I see a game of that style come along, I gotta check it out. 

I got a chance to play a few games of Project Cyber at PAX East and while the game is still early in development, I had a lot of fun and see tons of potential in the game. 

The game is almost a futuristic version of foosball and pits two teams of three against each other in an arena where you have to get the disk into the opponents goal to score points. Each team has three different characters. A goaltender that can throw up a wall and block incoming shots, a character that can use a gun to move the disk and a striker who can make key plays. It's simple but team coordination will be key if you want to win. You can't just run in and make a ton of goals, you will need to use the skills of everyone on the team in order to make those goals. Within a few moments of playing the game I was having a blast, but then something happened that made the game more intense. At about halfway through the match an event will take place. The event that occured during my match was that the map started to split apart, creating a giant hole down the middle. You can dash across it but if you fall it, you will be sitting out for about 5 seconds or so. Those seconds are critical as it allows the enemy team to make a power play before you get back into the action. 

All in all, I had a blast with Project Cyber and I cannot wait to see how the game grows over time. I can easily see this game be part of E-Sports in the future as it has plenty of action and I think this is a game that people would love watching. 

The other thing that I absolutely loved about Project Cyber is how Spearhead Games is going to make the community part of the developmental process. You can go to their website and sign up for a free Steam key right now you can see Spearhead constantly working on the game everyday on their Twitch.TV stream. Spearhead will constantly be in contact with the players everyday through all forms of social media, their Twitch stream and their official forums. I absolutely love when developers do this. Having a relationship with the developer where your feedback and the feedback of others make it into the game really makes the game feel more personal and I wish more developers were open to this idea. 

Enter the Wu-Tang, Sun and Moon, and House Tong in Swordsman

Free-to-play MMO Swordsman looks like the next best thing to the Jade Empire sequel I dream about.  In the following trailer, we see three of the 10 schools of combat you can choose to follow.  They are Wu-Tang, Sun and Moon, and House Tong.  One of them seems to involved gauntlets that shoot bullets.  So those are gun-gloves, I guess.  The other two seem to involve more traditional swordplay and magic.  It all looks pretty sweet.

Princess Peach Wii Remote is pretty in pink

Nintendo previously released Mario and Luigi themed Wii Remotes but now they're adding a royal touch to the collection. The new Princess Peach Wii Remote is styled in the princess's signature colors, with a crown icon silk-screened on it instead of Mario's customary "M" logo. I particularly like the color of the buttons and D-pad. Now all they need is a blue Toad-themed controller so you can host a color-coded Mario 3D World party.


Pepsi augments reality, throws meteors, aliens, and attacking robots at bus commuters

If you'll pardon the shameless Pepsi Max plug, this is actually pretty cool. Pepsi took a busy London bus stop, installed a screen and a camera, then injected some augmented reality into a few pleasantly surprised commuters' lives. I think the dodgy tiger would've absobloodylootely made me get my knickers in a twist and take off down the motorway in my trainers, as they might say in the U.K.

War of the Vikings launches (axes at your forehead) after half a year in Steam Early Access

After six months in Steam Early Access, War of the Vikings launched today. If you like your Vikings depicted with a little more historical accuracy than, say, a Skyrim, or if you appreciate a laser focus on close-quarters combat more in the vein of Mount & Blade, then War of the Vikings might be the online multiplayer combat game you've been waiting for.

New maps coincide with the launch, bringing team death match, conquest, pitched battle, and arena modes to scenes like Stronghold, Tide, Ice Floe, Ravine, and Ruins. The base game is $24.99, but variants run all the way up to the $174.99 Valhalla Edition, complete with digital art book, digital strategy guide, digital novel, a lifetime pass giving you all current and upcoming downloadable content, and more.

PAX East 2014: Hands on with Orcs Must Die: Unchained

I have sunk a countless amount of hours into Orcs Must Die 2, the incredibly fun tower defense game where you have to set up deadly traps to prevent Orcs from reaching your entrance. It was incredibly addicting and challenging and I have hoped that a sequel to the game would be released eventually, but at PAX East I learned that something even better was coming. 

Throughout my travels on the show floor I came across a booth for Orcs Must Die: Unchained the third game in the Orcs Must Die series and this time, things are a little bit different. Instead of it being a single player tower defense game, Orcs Must Die Unchained is a 5v5 fortress siege game that has MOBA influences in it. The basic premise of the game is that you have to guide your friendly Orcs to the enemy base. You also have to defend your base from enemy Orcs as well. For those worried that Orcs Must Die: Unchained has abandoned their roots, you can calm down. The same Orc murdering traps you know and love are still in the game and are an important key to victory. Throughout the battle you will earn various forms of currency that can be used to buy traps, and can also be used to upgrade the Orcs that spawn from your bases. Teamwork is key because upgrading the Orcs is a team effort. It will often take a huge amount of cash to get your Orcs to a higher rank to everyone needs to chip in. 

Like traditional MOBA's each character has their own unique list of abilities that can be used on the enemy players or enemy Orcs. The War Mage and Sorceress from Orcs Must Die 1 and 2 have returned and join a new robust cast of characters. They took the winning formulas of both Orcs Must Die and traditional MOBA's and have created and incredibly fun hybrid of both. I only played a few games of Orcs Must Die: Unchained at PAX and I cannot wait till the game enters a public beta so I can play some more. if you loved the first two games, do not worry, you will have a blast with Orcs Must Die: Unchained

Orcs Must Die: Unchained will be a free to play game although the specifics on pricing hasn't been revealed yet. You can however choose one of three different founders packages on their website which will grant you access to goodies as they come. Think of it as Kickstarter. The more you pay, the more rewards you get in return.

Drinkbox Studios has released the first trailer for their newest game, Severed, and it's trippier than brown acid on the Magical Mystery Tour. The visuals are very similar to their last game, Guacamelee!, but from the looks of the gameplay, it'll be a completely new monster.

In Severed, you play as a lost warrior trying to knit together pieces of her life from both the past and the future. You'll trek through the surreal landscape and crawl through dungeons to find new abilities and see what secrets this place is hiding. It will be a first-person adventure that uses gesture-based combat to cut down enemies and interact with the world. It features a nonlinear story and gameplay, so you can take whatever path you see fit to unlock the upgrades you want.

They haven't announced a platform yet, but judging by the swipe-based gameplay, I wouldn't be surprised if they were gunning for the iOS/Android. Since I'm still stuck in the qwerty-age of cell phones, I can only hope this will get a PC release as well. Severed will be released sometime in the Spring of 2015.


PAX East 2014: Hands on with Race The Sun and the Oculus Rift

I played Race The Sun at PAX East last year and I absolutely loved it. I heard that Race The Sun would be at PAX again this year but this time, they would be showing off the game with Oculus Rift support. 

First thing I would like to say is that the Oculus Rift is legit. When I put that headset on, I really felt like I was in the game world. The easiest way I could describe it is that it's almost similar to watching an Imax movie where the entire screen takes up your entire vision. The big difference of course is that the Oculus is a virtual reality headset. When you move your head with the Oculus, the game moves as well giving you the great perspective that you are actually there and you are actually looking around the game world. 

As soon as the game started, I was blown away. I was flying through the map and even though I was sitting in one spot, it felt like I was flying. If I were to ever play this at home, I feel like putting a fan in front of you while you play would further the experience. Over the last year and bunch of new features has been added to Race The Sun including the ability to jump. Let me tell you, when I jumped in the air and then started falling to the ground, I honestly felt like my actual body was falling and it was a pretty crazy experience. Finally the most terrifying part of the game with the headset. For those who haven't played Race The Sun, you need to avoid obstacles while flying through the area. When I hit a wall, I instantly turned away and flinched, thinking I was about to get into a serious car accident. 

Race The Sun is already an amazing game that I highly recommend people check out but the Oculus Rift support has made the experience even more amazing. This is the perfect game that I feel people should check out if they want to be sold on the idea of the Oculus Rift. 

Another bit of amazing news is that Race The Sun will be coming to PS3, PS4 and PS Vita this Summer and will be cross buy. Buy it on one and you get all three versions. 

This game and a couple of others I played at PAX really sold me on the idea of the Oculus Rift and I cannot wait until it's available for consumers to buy. 

Race The Sun is currently available on Steam for $9.99.

Final Borderlands 2 Headhunter Pack launched today

For those looking to squeeze a bit more life out of Borderlands 2 (or if you're like me and can't stop playing it because it's so awesome), today saw the launch of the final DLC pack for the game: Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax.

For those who are wondering who Crawmerax is, Crawmerax is a boss in the original game's The Secret Armory of General Knoxx expansion pack and was considered the first raid boss in the series.  Consider it the first game's equivalent of Terramorphous the Invincible, except Crawmerax was part of an expansion whereas Terramorphous can be fought without any expansion pack.  Anywho, Crawmerax takes Sir Hammerlock captive and wants to get his revenge on the original vault hunters for defeating his father in the previous outing.  Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax is available now on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and the PlayStation Network for $2.99.



Adult Swim Games to publish Rain World, Oblitus, and Westerado: Double Barreled

Five Nintendo 3DS titles get a price cut

Nintendo has recently cut the prices of five Nintendo 3DS titles, and we're not talking your mini-game collections or some little eShop games.  These are five games that are considered "must owns" by a good number of people including Nintendo themselves.  The games are:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

Each of these games are getting cut down to $29.99 and are definitely recommended whether you've played other games in their respective franchises or of these would be your first outings (granted NSMB2 is a tad on the easy side, but still fun).


Have a little spaghetti with your western PvZ: Garden Warfare

The newest Plants VS. Zombies: Garden Warfare DLC, out today, is called Zomboss Down.

Zomboss has been shot down and now his zombie minions are roaming the desert. It's your job to stop them from accessing a nearby secret facility/golf course on brand new maps like Cactus Canyon Gardens and Graveyards. 

What else do you get?  Well, you'll get eight new playable characters like the Wrestling Star zombie and Lawn Pea, 200+ customization items, 10 more levels to achieve raising the cap from 20 to 30, and brand-new challenges.

About 25,000 DK2 versions of the Oculus Rift have been sold

So how well is the second development kit of the Oculus Rift selling? Talking with Tech Crunch, the people at Oculus have revealed that about 25,000 units have been sold so far.

Pre-orders started on March 19th. The new kit has a 1080P OLED screen, low persistence feature, and motion tracking just to name a few. The kit sells for $350, a $50 premium over the previous kit.

In case you were wondering, the first development kit sold about 60,000 units during its availability. Sales of the original dev kit were halted when parts went out of production. With the Facebook acquisition, it sounds like Oculus can now build their own parts that can suit their needs more.

Those who have pre-ordered the second dev kit, like me, can expect it to be shipped in July. Let's hope that this one comes through on time, unlike the first dev kit, which was delayed a bit.

Impressions: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

Every four years, the world of international football gathers together for a month long final tournament to determine the best team in the world.  Just like the 2010 World Cup, EA Sports has brought the tournament straight into our homes via console in the form of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, which is available today on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

We're not quite ready to do a review of the game, but we wanted to make sure some impressions of the game are available as we've had time to go through most of the game modes.  2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil brings the same fun game modes from the previous version of this game, including the ever-popular Captain Your Country mode, which allows players to create a pro from scratch or pick from an existing pro for a corresponding country and build them up during the qualification process, leading all the way to the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The mode has gone through some upgrades, including making it a bit easier to build up stats via the training mini-games that have been available in the FIFA franchise of games.  It may even be a little too easy to build those stats up, but considering that a player doesn't have access to a player's club team like they would in the regular title, this is the way to make sure that created players are competitive.

Of course, the regular World Cup mode is available, which leaves the choice up to a player as to whether to play the World Cup Final as is from the draw back in December, or to create their own fantasy version of the tournament and create some stacked groups in order to increase the difficulty.  The mode is straight forward, as expected, but stunning visuals of all the new stadiums that have been built or renovated for the tournament are shown off in all their glory.  Gameplay is fairly similar to FIFA 14, if not just a tad slower than its counterpart.

If a player feels like trying to re-write history, the History of the World Cup is available and allows players to replay some of the most exciting games in the history of the tournament.  Also included in the title is the Road to Qualification mode that allows a player to take on the managerial position of a country and try to take them from the early stages of qualifying all the way to Brazil. 

For a title that is somewhat truncated since it is only international matches leading to the World Cup, there is plenty of meat in this game, though there is a lot more to cover than what can be included in this.

PAX East 2014: My impressions of The Evil Within gameplay demo from PAX East 2014

Those who attended PAX East 2014 got a chance to see a sneak peak at The Evil Within, the new survival horror game by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. I got a chance to sit in on the presentation and while I feel The Evil Within has the potential to be great I couldn't help shake this feeling of Deja Vu while watching the video.

The demo was split up into two parts. The first takes place in a city that looks like it's straight out of the movie Inception in how it kept collapsing and shape shifting as the demo went on. If you enjoyed the new Resident Evil games, you should feel right at home. Evil Within looks like a Resident Evil game with its over the shoulder camera, and while I didn't get to play the game, it looks like it will probably use the same Resident Evil control scheme as well. Of course with the similarities to Resident Evil, it's not surprising that Sebastian encountered zombies on his travels with the city. One interesting thing of note was that Sebastian has the ability to set the zombies on fire after they go down. I am going to assume that if you don't set them on fire, they could get back up and start chasing after you again. The first part of the demo reached its conclusion when Sebastian made his way to an area of the map that was completely flooded. Sebastian threw a bottle into the water and a giant creature appeared. I assume that you are going to have to traverse this area in the final game without making too much motion in the water or else you will meet certain death. Certain death was exactly what Sebastian faced as he jumped in the water and made as much noise as possible swimming. The giant creature jumped out of he water and killed him. 

The second part of the demo started and Sebastian is now making his way through a sewer system all while being chased by a monster that looks like it is something out of Silent Hill. The monsters were giant men in butcher aprons, with safes as their heads that are wrapped in bloody barbed wire. I honestly felt like I was now watching a new Silent Hill game. Silent Hill games are known for having enemies representing your worst nightmares coming after you so I am really excited to see how they handle this aspect of the game. The demo continued with Sebastian making his way through the sewers while avoiding monsters. Soon after, the demo came to an end.

I am a little conflicted about this game. While I am one of the few that has actually enjoyed the newer Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, I couldn't help but shake this feeling of Deja Vu when watching the video. One the one hand I feel like I would really enjoy this game but I feel like it would absolutely frustrate me at the same time, especially when something as simple as opening or closing doors turns into a button mashing, quick time event. I absolutely loathe this is video games today. Please, just let us either open or close the door. Stop this. I just hope when the final game is released that it feels like something new and fresh and not just another Resident Evil.

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition Update 1.1 has new map, tanks, and crew system

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition's Update 1.1 is here, and it's a game changer. Or at least a game deepener. Deepening maker. (I give up.) But I like the introduction of this crew system to Wargaming.net's competitive, online, free-to-play tank smasher.

Originally, you could buy upgrade packages for your tank. These packages improved certain aspects of your tank, like engine power, tank treads, or guns. But now, with the crew system, the non-player characters that run your tank, like the commander, driver, and gunner, can be assigned dozens of skills that further improve your overall tank. For example, you can assign your crew to train a camoflauge skill. Through battle experience, the camoflauge training bar goes up, and then, once fully trained, that specific crew—in that specific tank—gets better at camoflauging their tank on the battlefield.

Um, maybe you had to be there. But, trust me, it makes me regret selling back all my old tanks. I could've kept training on them, improving my crew's skills. Lesson learned, however. I'm at least very close to 100 percent on my Chaffee (a tier V American light tank). Once that crew reaches 100 percent, they can start training individual skills. Yes, in World of Tanks there's always another bar to fill up, apparently. Finish one progress bar and there's another one right behind it. But, hey, that's the nature of online games with role-playing components. It's the beautiful grind.

Now that I've bored you with too many crew details, the other aspects of Update 1.1 (which are also cool) introduce a lineup of five new medium tanks to the still-sparse U.K. family tree. And Update 1.1 reveals a new map, Himmelsdorf, with a massive castle on a hill to one side, and a maze-like run of urban European buildings over the rest of the map. Artillery and heavy tanks should be quite miserable there as the architecture will mess with artillery's trajectory, and medium and light tanks will seriously outmaneuver the slow-moving, slow-maneuvering heavies.

Sid Meier taking you to the stars in the next Civilization game

You maybe still conquering Earth, but are you ready to move beyond our planet? Sid Meier wants to. During the weekend at PAX, 2K Games announced the next game in the Civilization series.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is coming this Fall and will be about colonizing other planets. It sounds like you'll be able to customize a ship and your culture to spread out among other planets in the universe. 

Along with a new theme to the game, there will be new technology options, new quests, and new science to research and build. 

Technology wise, Beyond Earth will be able to use th new Mantle API that's supported by various AMD cards. DirectX 11 will be there as well, but no word on DirectX 12.

To celebrate the announcement, here's the launch trailer, which has no gameplay whatsoever. Still, it's the first teaser for a game that I'm sure many Civilization fans are salivating over.
