Moon Hunters is a "co-op personality test" dressed in RPG clothing

Compassionate? Dispassionate? Lover. Fighter. Builder of legends. Unlocker of constellations. There is an interesting premise behind Moon Hunters. I'm not 100 percent convinced it works, but I'm just going off one trailer. But again: I like the premise. There are mythological underpinnings. A fairy tale soundtrack. It's basically a 1 to 4-player "co-op personality test."

Wait, what?

I'm cool with the painted, randomly generated pixel art. I'm cool with the story about the moon forgetting to rise one day so monsters and chaos ensue. Handling those monsters and ensuing chaos with sword swinging and spell casting is obviously the best way to handle those problems. There's some survival, exploring, and crafting along the way, too. These all sounds like good things!

But "co-op personality test"? Such a weird way of putting that. From what I can tell, these are simply A/B conversational outcomes. But we'll see. I mean, give an NPC some water or let them die of dehydration? Is that a personality test? Or answering Ham-fisted questions like, "What is most important in this life: Happiness or purpose?"

I love the look. In theory, I'm okay with everything else, too. I just hope the writing isn't quite so blunt throughout, though.

Moon Hunters is out now on PC and PlayStation 4.
