Star Fox Zero is less than a month away from its April 22nd release date, and Nintendo has a brief tv spot for the arcade space shooter. While the game looks a whole lot better than its anemic showing at E3 last year, I'm still having trouble getting excited for it. Platinum Games has a strong reputation and I love their games, but this is like the third time Star Fox has been rebooted and the second time Star Fox 64 has been remade--remember the 3DS version?
It doesn't help that Nintendo is seriously leaning hard on the nostalgia for this trailer. They recycle all the stale old memes in less than 30 seconds and as someone who is particularly sick of pandering nostalgia I had to roll my eyes. Do a barrel roll? Seriously? The game will probably play just fine but as the triumphant return of Star Fox, it feels just a tad warmed over. I guess we'll see next month.
