Amazon gives you a brand new free engine to develop games

More On: Lumberyard

When developing games for multiple platforms, there are a few good ones out there. Unity and the Unreal engine come to mind quick as an engine with many games developed for and have gone on to great success on various platforms. Amazon is adding their hat into the ring with Lumberyard.

Lumberyard is a fork of the Crytek engine so you know it's got some good visuals behind it. Amazon has gone and added some low level integration with Twitch so you can easily add streaming and chat capabilities to your game if you use the engine. There's also integration with Amazon's web services, which is how they are going to try and make money off of Lumberyard.

You see, it's all free for you to use and develop games. Make any game you wish and don't pay a dime to Amazon. If you do decide to use Amazon's Cloud service though to help with things such as multiplayer, that's where you start paying.

It's a pretty big step to offer the entire package, including source code, for free. You won't see many engines allowing you to compile a game for mobile, console, and PC platforms without paying for it. I'll be on the lookout to see if we can get some good quality games with this engine and if you've been looking for something to build your dream game at a low cost, Lumberyard could be right up your alley.
