Mighty No. 9 has been delayed again and ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

How the mighty have fallen. From landslide Kickstarter victory to tired punchline, Mighty No. 9 has become the poster child for runaway crowdfunding hype. According to Nintendolife, the game has been delayed for a third time. After the second delay, developer Comcept promised a February release. That has been pushed back to an uncomfortably vague spring 2016 window; the problem is apparently bugs in the netcode.

Mighty No. 9's protracted development cycle is really puzzling to me, although I suspect it fell prey to what I call "Double Fine Syndrome." Backers threw so much money at Comcept that they decided to rest on their laurels before they even earned them. Still, it's pretty baffling. It's a 2D side-scroller, the bread and butter of the indie scene, and with Deep Silver publishing Mighty No. 9 technically isn't even an indie game anymore. This isn't No Man's Sky we're talking about here--there's no excuse for it taking so long. There are similar Mega Man fan and tribute games that took less time to make--20XX is a good example--and some of them are even free. By the time Might No. 9 finally gets here I wonder if anyone will care.
