I love Magic the Gathering. I love Puzzle Quest. Now, thanks to Wizards of the Coast and D3, I can love Magic: the Gathering- Puzzle Quest!

My dream mashup is now available on Android and iOS devices everywhere. The game, which launches yesterday, is free to play like most Puzzle Quest titles, but offers a variety of in game purchase options.

I have spent a good portion of the last 24 hours playing the game and am thoroughly enjoying it so far. It must be said however that the game is far more Puzzle Quest than it is Magic the Gathering. There are quite a few of the MtG mechanics that have been altered in a drastic manner in favor of traditional Puzzle Quest mechanics. For example, mana color doesn’t matter in terms of casting spells / cards; instead your Planeswalker of choice has certain affinities to various colors, allowing them to draw more mana from one color over another. Cards also do not offer the ability to block, which could have gone a long ways to making the experience a little more strategic.

Despite these complaints, I am still having a lot of fun with the game. The in game economy, so far, seems very fair and although cards and characters can be bought with real money, I haven’t had an issue earning and using the in-game currency as of yet. If you are a fan of either franchise, this one is definitely worth checking out.
