Developer Obsidian Entertainment showcased its upcoming role-playing game Pillars of Eternity that is a love letter to classic fantasy games. Both the gameplay and visual style are inspired from the classic role-playing games, but fortunately updated to modern standards.

I was especially curious to see the game's progress since it was originally funded on Kickstarter. The game showed great promise in the E3 presentation that included the game's beginning section. While the narrative begins simple enough from traveling along with a caravan, it quickly develops into a full-fledged adventure. The presentation also included a preview of tactical combat that is titled the engagement system. Players will need to plan through combat instead of just rushing into frays.

Another neat feature showcased was the game's scripted interaction sections, which are a form of classic choose your own adventure books. Based upon player selection, different outcomes will result in the narrative. While only a brief glimpse of the game was shown, I'm particularly excited to see more of the game world and its various inhabitants.

Pillars of Eternity will be available this year for Windows and Mac.
