Get revved up with Mario Kart 8's new trailer

by: Sam - - Add a Comment

This morning brought a wealth of information about Nintendo's next big Wii U title Mario Kart 8, including an all new trailer. The trailer is packed full of the same great racing action we have previously seen, as well as some of the game's new features, including all new items. Two new items revealed were the Boomerang, which seems to hit opponents and steal their coins, and the Piranha Plant which bites nearby racers. The trailer also shows off just how good the game looks, certainly making it a new competitor for the best looking Wii U game.

Mario Kart 8 will be the newest addition to a great library of first party titles on Wii U when it releases on May 30th. Like its predecessors Mario Kart 8 doesn't look like it will revolutionize the Kart racing genre  but is sure to be a lot of fun, especially the new zero gravity racing.

Thursday means it is time to check in with Joe Jewett down in the Brewery District to run down this week's biggest releases. We had to rush through things a bit today in order to cram in all three games that I wanted to talk about: MLB 14 The show, The Elder Scrolls Online, and Goat Simulator.

2.7 million people have bought Reaper of Souls with Malthael being killed over 1.5 million times

by: John - - Add a Comment

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls has been bought by over 2.7 million people since it was released last week. I'm one of those 2.7 million. Blizzard has said that the end character has been killed over 1.5 million times so there's still a bunch of folks that haven't killed Malthael yet.

The recent patch and expansion has really drawn me and a bunch of my friends back into the game. They've really fixed many of the issues that were present when the game first came out and now farming for items is fun. No longer are most people reliant on the now closed auction house as I've found a ton of items I can use since i started playing again.

And something really nice with the release was there was practically no server issues. None of my friends had any problems connecting when it first launched and I didn't read of servers having problems.

Reaper of Souls has dominated my playing time as of late and Blizzard has done a wonderful job at fixing what was wrong and adding some great content to make Diablo III a really, really fun game again.

Walk A Crooked Mile in The Wolf Among Us next week

by: Randy - - Add a Comment

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile
And he found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse
And they all lived together in a little crooked house

At least, that's how Mother Goose tells it. I can't wait to play through The Wolf Among Us: Episode 3 – A Crooked Mile to see how writer Pierre Shorette takes and twists its meaning into the masterful video game adaptation of the Fables series. My response is now undeniably Pavlovian when it comes to anything regarding The Wolf Among Us. Look at me. I'm drooling.

Expect a Tuesday, April 8 launch on PC and Mac, with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 launches to follow in the day or two after that.

Final EVE: True Stories comic is available, free, and explosive

by: Randy - - Add a Comment

The fourth and final (and free) comic in the EVE: True Stories series is now available, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics and EVE Online developer CCP. EVE: True Stories #4 wraps up the true-to-gamelife events of a single man that dismantled Band of Brothers, one of the most renown player-run corporations of EVE Online's ten-year history.

I've read the entire four-comic mini series and I can barely figure out what happened. I don't know if that's because of the convoluted storytelling, because there's a different artist every comic, or—more likely—because I'm a simpleton that can't follow the little bouncing ball. You should have more luck than me. And, regardless of my graphic-novel-comprehension handicap, the fact that this comic series exists is a wonderful experiment in the crossing over of video games and comic books. I'm excited it even came to fruition. I just can't recommend it to anyone that doesn't already have a subscription to EVE Online.

Adam Sessler leaves Rev3 Games and Discovery Digital Networks

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment

Adam Sessler, one of the most recognizable and popular videogame journalists, has announced that he has left Rev3 Games in order to pursue other opportunities. In a recent post on his Tumblr, Adam feels like the time is right to explore new avenues inside of the game industry.

After some incredible achievements over the last year and a half, I am announcing my departure from Rev3 Games and Discovery Digital Networks. Sixteen years in front of the camera covering the videogame industry has brought me to a point where I am ready and desiring to explore new opportunities. While I would never say no to doing one more review, interview or opinion piece, the time feels right to explore new avenues inside of gaming that help further the medium. The audience, my wonderful and talented co-workers and the last year at Rev3 Games will forever be appreciated for what was accomplished. There never is a right time to part ways with something that has become as natural as breathing, but things do end and now feels right.

For those who don't know him, and have obviously been living under a rock, Adam Sessler was the host of Extended Play / X-Play on Tech TV/G4 for 10+ years.

I met Adam Sessler a few years ago and he is an incredibly nice guy with great talent and passion for what he does. I truly wish him the best in whatever endeavor he embarks on next.

Now Loading for the week of March 31, 2014

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment

This is definitely a week for PC gamers as one of the most anticipated MMORPG games in history is finally launching. No more Oblivion; no more Skyrim; the Elder Scrolls are now online! Alternatively, if questing isn’t your thing, you could always turn to life as a goat in Goat Simulator. Seriously, how do you pick between these two?

This week’s full list includes:

Batman: Arkham Origins - Deluxe Edition available for download

by: Cary - - Add a Comment

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition ports the handheld title to PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. The digital download of the game is available as of yesterday and include improved visuals, a new map system, and different difficulty levels. While I wasn't completely enamored with this installation in the Batman: Arkham franchise, it could be cool to check out the new batsuits and changes to see how it effects gameplay.

Game of Thrones intro done with Skyrim cities

by: John - - Add a Comment

Game of Thrones has a really cool intro if you've never seen it. It's also a pretty damn good series to watch.

Well, someone has taken that really great intro and used Skyrim cities instead. It took him about two years to do this and it's really well done for a solo effort. Makes me want to go back into the world of Skyrim, but I know I'd get lost for weeks on end if I do.

Another Valve employee leaves to join Oculus

by: John - - Add a Comment

Boy, that cash infusion is sure helping Oculus hire some great talent. On the heels of hiring Michael Abrash, Oculus has now hired on former Valve employee Aaron Nicholls.

Aaron is a veteran in the gaming industry and has worked on such heavyweight titles as Gears of War 3 and Halo 3.

So far, the money from the Facebook acquisition is allowing Oculus to grab up some grade A talent from some high profile companies. Whereas a lot of folks saw this as a bad thing, I think it's working out well for everyone so far as better folk will in turn make for a better product for all of us.

Laugh at the Arma 3 Karts DLC announcement from a Van Damme-alike doing splits on moving go karts

by: Randy - - Add a Comment

Bohemia Interactive's Arma series is one of the scariest military simulators on the planet. And by "one of the scariest," I can't even think of what the second-scariest military simulator on the planet is. Arma is that scary. So, in the spirit of many announcements made today, the announcement of Arma 3 Karts comes as somewhat of a surprise. I imagine this Karts DLC will carry on the hyper-realism Arma is known for. The Karts DLC ad below even pays homage to the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme's now-legendary "Volvo splits" commercial.

“Since we’re already in the zombie business with DayZ, we felt the next logical expansion would be to take on karting”, said Jay Crowe, Creative Director on Arma 3. “Our sandbox could not be called complete without karts, and thus we set ourselves the goal to recreate this pure form of racing. Welcome to Arma 3's World of Karts: drive / overtake / win.”

World of Tanks gets Minecrafted in new 1.04 update

by: Randy - - Add a Comment

The folks at Wargaming.net assembled a new Minecraft-alike game mode for World of Tanks. But—hardy har—it's just an April Fool's joke. The video pokes fun at several ongoing player complaints and suggestions. Suggestions like fully destructible environments, perfectly symmetrical battlefields, and flawless matchmaking. If you don't play World of Tanks then most of the jokes will be lost on you, but, as an avid tanker myself, I got a chuckle or two out of it.

If you want to get an idea of what World of Tanks is really about, read our PC and Xbox 360 Edition reviews. (Spoiler: the game's great.)

Bastet pounces her way onto the Battleground of the Gods in the newest SMITE update

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment

The huge SMITE launch tournament concluded over the weekend and a big congrats goes out to Team SoloMid for winning the entire tournament and taking home a cool $200,000. The tournament may be over but that doesn't mean Hi-Rez hasn't been hard at work with new content for the game.

A new patch is scheduled to be released tomorrow and with it brings the very long awaited reworking of Bastet, a new skin for Tyr and the return of the Feaster Bunny Bakasura skin.

Bastet's old model was pretty bad compared to the rest of the roster but now she has been given a massive upgrade to her art, 3D model, special FX, and voicepack and she looks great.

A new PrivaTyr skin is also available for Tyr complete with new VO and if you own the voicepack, you have new custom voice commands as well. A few weeks ago we got a Sith Lord type skin for Sun Wukong and this week we get a pirate skin for Tyr. There have been so many amazing skins made over the last few months, I cannot wait to see what Hi-Rez has in store for the future. Now if my main girl Isis could get some love, that would be great.

Since Easter is right around the corner, the Bakasura Feaster Bunny skin will be making its return for a limited time as well. Both the Feaster Bunny skin and PrivaTyr skin will cost 400 Gems.

Finally the new god rotation is Isis, Athena, Odin, Anhur and Loki.

To check out the full list of patch notes and join in on the conversation, be sure to check out SMITE's official Reddit page.

Neverwinter announces the arrival of dragons as next playable race

by: Travis - - Add a Comment

Free-to-play MMO Neverwinter has announced that dragons will be the game's next playable race, allowing players to begin as a small, cute baby dragon and grow to become a giant, fearsome foe. While this might be one of the better April Fools' Day pranks this year, I'm unfortunately sadden by the fact that I won't actually be able to become a dragon.

Even better though is the trailer put together for the prank which above all us features a dragon riding a horse. Another prank by developer Perfect World that is actually live in the game until April 4 is Respen’s Marvelous Game event, which transports player characters into an actual tabletop game of Dungeons and Dragons.

Further information on both the playable dragon race and the current game event can be found on the official Neverwinter website. Neverwinter is available now for Windows PC.

ArcheAge is scheduled for release in North America in 2014 for Windows PC.

Time to run the shadows

by: Jeff - - Add a Comment

The year is 2075, magic and machinery have melded together, the Megacorporations are at each others' throats, and a dragon has woken from a deep slumber. Shadowrun Online is now on Steam Early Access for 30% off, and offers an early prequel for the upcoming campaign. You'll get an introduction to Shadowrun Online's combat system through four missions and PvP, and new content will be added regularly with plenty of opportunities for players to provide feedback and influence development.

For the uninitiated, Shadowrun Online was funded by Kickstarter, and is based on one of the biggest tabletop RPGs on the market. It's a turn-based MMO that features a classless character creation, and you'll be able to cast spells, hack computers, and take part in a world-campaign that depends on the players' actions.

You can check out Russell's post for more information and some screenshots.

Draugen's teaser trailer emerges from the deep

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment

Red Thread's new horror title Draugen has its first teaser trailer and while I have almost no idea what the game is about, that somehow makes it even scarier. Damn do I like the writing too. The ominous monologue that plays over the trailer is giving me a very creepy Eternal Darkness vibe, just bleak and hopeless enough. Supposedly the plot concerns an American scientist of the 1920s trapped in a Norwegian fishing village. Few games (I can't think of a single one) explore the horror iconography of Scandinavian myth, so I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one as it slithers its way to PC, Mac, Linux and "an undisclosed next-generation console." Spooky.

Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate Deluxe Edition is here

by: Sean Colleli - - Add a Comment

If you missed the handheld spinoff of Arkham Origins (like I did), you now have the opportunity to experience it in HD on the home console of your choice. Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate: Deluxe Edition is now available and translates last year's Batman Metroidvania adventure to consoles with refreshed textures, controls and extra features. I'll be interested to check this out, particularly on Wii U. That said, I wish Warner Bros Interactive would put some money toward patching the game-breaking bugs in Batman Arkham Origins before porting other games.
