The 400 pound gorilla makes his presence felt (Sony releases high end gaming headsets)

It's sort of shocking to me that a company as willing to get into almost any market there is that Sony hasn't released a truly high quality gaming headset in the US to this point. What's even more shocking is that Sony is a huge name in the audio industry and has a big portion of the gaming market tied to the PS3. What's been the holdup for them in bringing quality audio hardware to PC and PS3?

Well, we got the response to those questions on the PC side at least today with the release of the DR-GA500 and DR-GA200 gaming headsets from Sony. The GA500 as the higher end unit uses a virtualization technology to emulate true 7.1 sound, but it's still a step in the right direction.

It will be interesting to see how Sony's appearance in the market affects the other products out there.

WHO: Ideal for PC gamers looking to enhance their gaming experience with premium audio and improved comfort during gameplay, the DR-GA500 and DR-GA200 are designed to bring gamers closer to the action than ever before.

WHAT: The new DR-GA500 utilizes the unique Sony Virtual Phones™ (VPT) technology and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoding to create virtual 7.1 channel surround sound, resulting in an ideal audio environment for first person shooter (FPS) and role playing (RPG) gaming. The signal processing hardware of this flagship model is contained in a small external unit.

Both the DR-GA500 and DR-GA200 headsets feature a “triple enfolding” design which uses ventilation to reduce pressure on the ears, allowing for long game play sessions without discomfort. Each model also features 40 mm driver units for premium gaming sound quality and a high-quality, compact boom microphone.

These premium gaming headsets are compatible with all Sony VAIO™ models including the new F Series Laptop, built for PC gamers and multimedia enthusiasts.

WHERE: Sony’s DR-GA500 and DR-GA200 “Ultimate Weapon” PC Gaming headsets will be available this month for about $200 and $80, respectively, at www.sonystyle.com, Sony Style retail stores and other authorized retailers nationwide.
