Target finally enters game reservation business

More On:
Target announced yesterday that they will finally b getting into the game reservation business after watching rivals like Best Buy and Gamestop do this for years. The Target program will have a couple differences though, as they will only require a $1 reservation charge (unlike the $5 most charge) and they will give you a $5 Target gift card if the reservation card is brought back and the game purchased and picked up within seven days of release. While this sounds like a good deal, nowhere in the release does it address whether the $1 comes off the price of the game (like the $5 fee at Best Buy and Gamestop do) or whether the $1 fee is strictly for the "collectible" reservation card. If that were the case, then only IF you make it back within the seven day window to fully purchase your reserved game will you get your $1 investment back (and only net $4 in value of the $5 gift card). I actually did some real journalism and sent a follow-up to the PR firm representing Target to find out how this will work.

Some of the first titles eligible to be reserved will be Punch Out!! from Nintendo, EA Sports Active from Electronic Arts, Ghostbusters from Atari, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings from LucasArts, and UFC 2009 Undisputed from THQ. Target Guests Can Reserve Key Titles by Purchasing a Collectible Reservation Card for $1; Guests Receive $5 Target GiftCard upon Purchase of Title

MINNEAPOLIS --(Business Wire)-- Apr 16, 2009 Target announced today a new reservation program that offers guests a chance to reserve the biggest and most popular video game titles. Beginning April 19, Target guests can purchase a collectible reservation card, only in stores, for $1. When they bring the reservation card back within seven days of release to purchase their game, they will receive a $5 Target GiftCard to put toward a future purchase.

“We’ve created a reservation guarantee that ensures guests will get their hands on popular games the day they are released, and a $5 GiftCard upon purchase adds even more value,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Target. “We are constantly striving to make sure our guests find everything they need to work, live and play all in one convenient and simplified shopping experience.”

The program will kick-off with titles such as Punch Out!! from Nintendo, EA Sports Active from Electronic Arts, Ghostbusters from Atari, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings from LucasArts, and UFC 2009 Undisputed from THQ.
