Star Trek Online pre-order bonuses beaming down to retailers

More On: Star Trek Online
Atari is showing the love to people who pre-order Star Trek Online. Everyone who commits to buying early will get into the beta this January, and also get an early start on the game. The stats you rack up in the beta won't carry over to the main game, but if you start early, you'll get a leg up on the other aspiring Starfleet officers and Klingon warriors. And those are just the basic perks--there's a whole list of retailer-specific bonuses. I won't summarize them all here, check the break for that, but a few caught my eye.

Best Buy customers get a choice of two in-game pets. Klingon players get the venerable Targ (Worf had one as a kid), but Federation captains get a Tribble. Cute, but won't they multiply like crazy and devour your ship's consumables? If Cryptic keeps Tribble behavior accurate to the TV show, they won't stay exclusive for long--players will be so overrun with the fuzzballs they'll be giving them away, or beaming them onto the bridges of Klingon ships.

People who shop at Gamestop will have access to the one and only USS Enterprise from the original series. That's really cool and all, but this game takes place in 2409, almost 200 years after Kirk commanded that ship. Wasn't it destroyed in orbit around the Genesis planet in Star Trek 3? Even if it was still around, Starfleet must have done a massive overhaul and refit to the old Constitution class NCC-1701, for it to be in the same league as Picard's Galaxy class Enterprise, a Romulan d'deridex, or *shudder* a Borg cube.

The other bonuses aren't as flashy as those two, but offer some cool advantages. I'm counting the days until February 2nd.
