In a time when reality television seem to come in waves, games are now coming in reality layers. Yep, layers. Not lairs, although layered games may have those too. In this case, I'm talking about Electric Bat and they've got a new game in beta called WebLords. They develop their flash games on a customized open source platform using webparts to include chat and social network integration. Admittedly, I don't know much about the game, but I signed up for a shot at the closed beta to see what it's about. If you're interested in signing up, the link is in the press release. WebLords' Closed Beta Signups Invite Players to Conquer the Internet

AUSTIN, Texas - April 19, 2010 - Electric Bat Interactive (EBI) is giving gamers another chance to sign up to be a part of the exclusive beta for WebLords, a browser-based, free-to-play online Player vs. Player (PvP) game that uses an innovative layered-reality game (LRG) platform to turn the Web itself into  social entertainment. The rich, fantasy-based multi-player experience gives players a chance to create a kingdom by battling other players for control of any Website across the internet, inviting friends, chatting, and advancing their WebLord character.  WebLords enters the second stage of its closed beta on April 26, 2010, with official launch slated for later this summer.

"We boast a legacy of listening to our fans, and they were a terrific source of feedback in the first phase of closed beta," said Cindy Armstrong, CEO, Electric Bat Interactive, LLC.  "So, we would like to extend an invite to new players to join us in WebLords as we continue to ramp up and fine-tune the game for launch.  There's a lot of untouched territory out there on the Web - get into the game early."

In WebLords, players game across a parallel universe associated with any website of their choosing.  To develop kingdoms, players must conquer and rule coveted online landscapes and destroy relentless armies controlled by other players. Key features of WebLords include:

  • Players earn experience and loot from battles, which aids in growing their Empire and unlocking new battle-ready units as the game progresses;
  • Each WebLord is customizable, allowing gamers to create and modify their own character, armies and battle strategies;
  • Multi-layered, time-controlled battles provide an entertaining way to multi-task while on the Web;
  • With Wurl Bucks - the currency used to buy items in all Electric Bat Interactive games - players can further augment their experience with premium items from the store.

WebLords also features an integrated social community with friend's lists and status updates. With in-game results and rankings and a versatile gamebar, players will always have access to their score and possible bragging rights.

Interested beta testers can register at http://www.web-lords.com.  Created in Flash, WebLords can be installed in Internet Explorer or Firefox through a simple gamebar download; additional browser integration will be available soon.

Behind WebLords is Electric Bat Interactive's proprietary Wurl platform, which leverages existing open source technology within a reusable modular game system.  These modules enable interchangeable themes, characters, gameplay mechanics and standard game components, such as social networking, chat features and billing. This allows developers to roll out new games on an aggressive timeline.  Electric Bat Interactive is able choose from a variety of features for its future title development, drastically reducing time-to-market and costs.  The modules are also backwards compatible, enabling Electric Bat Interactive to upgrade existing games with future developments, in order to extend a successful franchise.
