Hearts of Iron III, first video and screens

Nearly four years after the detailed and overwhelming WW2 strategy title, Hearts of Iron II, and it's stand-alone expansion, Doomsday, Paradox Interactive is showing off the initial intel gathered for Hearts of Iron III.  This video, backed by a simple but sweeping score, features concept art (though I'm not positive why concept art is required in a genre that's already had every possible concept fully drawn out for years now), the skinning of wireframe models, as well as those Risk-intensive maps.

With more than 10,000 land provinces, part 3 is five times more detailed than part 2, which is saying a lot about a game already known for its veterans-only level of detail.  These screenshots show you just how lonely a two-dimensional Germany can be, how frighteningly Communist the USSR looks when it's painted red, and how freedom-loving the US is when it's painted blue.  (Okay, I'm kinda stretching at this point.)  Hearts of Iron III is about a year away from its Q3 2009 launch.

First screens from Hearts of Iron III revealed!

New York, October 1st, 2008 Paradox Interactive today released the first
screenshots from the highly anticipated grand strategy game Hearts of Iron
III - the third instalment in the critically acclaimed Hearts of Iron
series, that is eagerly awaited by the fans of the award-winning series.

Hearts of Iron III lets you play through the most engaging conflict in world
history, World War 2, on all fronts, as any country and through multiple
different scenarios. Guide your nation to glory and wage war, conduct
diplomacy and build your industry between 1936 and 1948.

The Hearts of Iron series is renowned for being the most detailed and
complete strategic World War 2 computer games ever made.

Hearts of Iron III will follow that tradition closely while focusing on
satisfying veteran players through a multitude of brand new features and
systems, including a huge map with more than 10,000 land provinces, making
the game five times more detailed than HoI2 and one of the most detailed
depictions of World War 2 ever made.

These first alpha screenshots depict parts of the record-breaking world map.

"I am proud to present the first looks of this revolutionary map", says
producer Johan Andersson, "Never before has the world been depicted with
such high detail, with over ten thousand different provinces spread over a
map covering dozens of square-meters."

Control every aspect of the war - take over the oceans with aircraft
carriers, submarines and battleships, and use your air force to defend your
skies and support your naval and ground forces to make history follow your
lead.
The grand strategy title Hearts of Iron III is scheduled for release in Q3,
2009.
