Well, there were rumors of a Sony/Gaikai
relationship back at E3. It wasn't announced, but today we can finally put Sony and Gaikai in the same sentence.
$380 million is what Sony's going to pay for the cloud gaming service. So you know what's coming to the PlayStation and TVs of Sony's world. Great! But, I'm still a little confused on the deal.
So here's the thing. Gaikai streams PC games right? And taking a look at some of the libraries of games that Gaikai serves, there's at least one "Microsoft" game on there in Alan Wake
. There might be more but I don't know since I don't use the service and I don't know if Gaikai lists all their games on their website. So with Sony's acquisition, are we going to see somes games removed from the service because it would be a little weird to see a game like Alan Wake running on a PlayStation even though it's streamed.
And, of course, we haven't heard about current subscribers too since this deal just came through. What will happen with them?
So, while this news is pretty interesting, what's more interesting is what's to come.
Microsoft has their own cloud service in Azure
that they can implement, if they so desire to get into the cloud streaming service. Will they though if they want to try and compete with Sony in this area. Or another possiblity and one that''s been talked about
is that Microsoft would just buy OnLive and go from there.
For now, Sony's first to get into the cloud based game streaming service, but I have a feeling they won't be the last and it could be sooner than we think.
