E3 2013: Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut (Hands-On)

     The first PC game I grabbed after upgrading to a higher end video card was Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I enjoyed the original on the PS2 over a decade ago before I had a proper PC, so when it came time to experience the latest Deus Ex, I figured I should enjoy it how it was meant to be. After playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut on the WiiU at the Square Enix booth, I think the console is getting a serious shot in the arm with one of the best FPS titles this generation. The gameplay works surprisingly well with the WiiU's touch screen interface after getting acclimated to the menu system and design choices that initially had me flummoxed on the PC.

    The big thing that Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut offers is a great deal of gameplay modifications that came from fan feedback, the biggest being changes to the boss battles and how they work. Previously they were a bit heavy on the gunplay, which made things difficult for players who decided to go a stealth hacker route. Now after playing the demo and getting a chance to go against the first boss Barrett, I got a chance to try out some of these changes and I'm pretty pleased with how things turned out. There's also the addition of the Missing Link DLC package, which comes bundled with the game.

     Visually this game is looking like a little bit of a step down from what a good PC will display it at. The loss of some anti-aliasing kind of hurts things, but this is still a great looking game. Displaying the neural hub works great for the WiiU gamepad screen, and it gives easy access to everything from weapons to augmentations. Those who've played Deus Ex: Human Revolution before might not have a lot of incentive to revisit the Director's Cut, but the changes to the first boss fight alone have me interested in seeing how the rest of the game will play out when it gets released later this year.
