BioShock issues and fixes

Posted by: John at 8/24/2007 8:07 AM - Comments (0)
Boy, BioShock's had an up and down week hasn't it. The website has posted some news concerning the problems between SecuROM and widescreen issues. First off, they are upping the limit on simultaneous computer installs from 2 to 5 and the reinstall limit from 3 to 5 on said computers. They call it their 5x5 plan. Personally I think they should do away with the limiting of reinstalls and really eliminate SecuROM itself as that's one piece of software that seems to cause many frustrations with this and other games. They are also looking to putting out a patch so you can change your FOV and have widescreen folks the ability to expand the horizontal FOV. They are also looking at a similar update for the 360.

I remember some problems with a game called Half-Life 2 that involved installation problems so perhaps 2K Games is going to have to go through a similar situation and learn from this experience like Valve has with Steam.

We have been reading and listening to your frustrations over SecuROM, PC activation problems, and technical support issues since BioShock launched on Tuesday, and we've devised a plan to help.

Starting immediately, we will be upping the activation count to a 5 by 5 plan. We will be raising the maximum amount of computers a user can have BioShock installed on simultaneously from 2 to 5, and allowing a user to reinstall BioShock on each of those computers from 3 times to 5 times. Also, we have in the works a revoke tool which you will be able to run on your machine if you want to free up that key and move it to to another computer (this works very much like Steam or iTunes system). We are also working with SecuROM and 2K customer service, so that when you do need to call in support problems, you get answers to your questions faster, without much waiting or being bounced around. SecuROM has been given much more autonomy to help fix your problems quickly and effectively. I am personally sorry for anyone who got bounced around in the past couple days (I even think I contributed to this problem) and we're going to make sure that does not happen in the future.

As for other technical issues, we are bringing on a team of tech support that will be on the 2K forums 24/7 to help people resolve their technical issues. Our QA guys are in the offices and on the forums, too, reproducing issues and looking for workarounds and compiling information that they can put towards making you a patch and updating the knowledge base.

Also, we are aware that our activation server went down last night, stopping some of you from finishing your installs. The server is up and running now and we have corrected the problem that caused that crash.

Finally, we have released a FAQ, which you can view in full below (and will also be posted on the 2K Forums in the Technical Support area) that will help clear up a lot of questions and misinformation that has been floating around about SecuROM and PC activation.

And as for widescreen, we also want to say we completely understand a user's desire to augment their FOV. BioShock is a harrowing experience, but we don't want anyone to feel limited (or motion sick!). So we are in the process of working on an official PC patch to give widescreen PC users a choice to expand their horizontal FOV, and are investigating creating a similar update for the 360.

And finally, I want to personally congratulate Racer_S from the Widescreen Gaming Forums, and his awesome user patch to expand the widescreen FOV in BioShock. I'm currently tracking him down via email, but hopefully, he'll accept my gratitude, and maybe an Nvidia 8800 to boot.

Ultimate Gaming Chair shows off new feature - Auto Catheter

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
The folks at Ultimate Game Chair have released a new viral video showing off a potential new feature of their chairs.  I am a bit surprised they used an Xbox 360 to demo the chair instead of the obvious choice, a Nintendo Wii...

Ken Levine meant no PS3 development.. at that time...

by: John - - Comments (0)
OK so there's this buzz going around that the next PSM3 mag has a preview and screenshots for a PlayStation 3 version of BioShock. People probably remember the interview with Ken Levine and deduced that there won't be a PS3 version. Joystiq even goes to say that there's no PS3 version planned as well. The interview took place last year so a lot can and did change. I can't say I'm surprised at the news but hey, PS3 folks need some Rapture loving too.

Bethesda and Splash Damage partner up

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Bethesda Softworks announced today that they have entered into a "long term development partnership" with Splash Damange (the folks behind the under rated Enemy Territories:Quake Wars).  No specifics of the deal or what it means for both parties have been released yet but we'll let you know as soon as Bethesda spills the beans. Official Guitar Hero World Tour announcement

by: John - - Comments (2)
I know Cyril was wondering if the game was really going to be called Guitar Hero World Tour since we didn't get any official word and yesterday's video only said Guitar Hero but here it is from the horse's mouth. So what are the folks doing to separate themselves from Rock Band? For starters, the drums have been redesigned and there's a new guitar. Something that sounds really cool is the ability to record, edit, and share your music with the Music Studio. Get eight folks together and you can battle it out with the Battle of the Bands mode. The game's also gone to all master recordings so no more covers which is good and bad. I do like some of the covers but I'm certainly not complaining that they are going all master recordings this time. They are also touting the largest on-disc set list and since they have the Eagles, I think they sold me on the game. Neversoft's doing the development for the 360 and PS3 while the Wii version is being handled by Vicarious Visions and Budcat's working on the PS2 version. [READ MORE]

Let's Samba!

by: John - - Comments (0)
Samba de Amigo is one of my all time favorite Dreamcast games and it's great to see it coming out on the Wii. While I'm still disappointed that we don't get maracas, you can bet some third party will make an add-on for it. From the trailer below you can see that the people are using two Wiimotes instead of a nunchuk in the other hand. Perhaps we'll hear a little shake from the speaker then. Overall, can't wait for this one to come out.

Konami releases a megaton of new Metal Gear 4 screenshots

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
I know John's all jazzed up about Metal Gear Solid 4 because he was cursing at the Raiden standee at GameStop this afternoon at lunch.  He then mumbled something about Metal Gear Solid 2 and how I wouldn't understand.  While I check out the Wikipedia entry to try and figure out what John was talking about here are a bunch of new screenies from the game.

Mr. Freeze shows up in new Lego Batman screenshots

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
We had a discussion on the Digital Crack Report last week about how there weren't real movie tie-in games for the new Indian Jones and Batman movies and that instead we were getting LEGO games based on those franchises.  I'm starting to think this might be the right approach as Travelers Tale has a pretty good rep with the games and they aren't bound by the boundaries of the movie.  Anyway, here are a bunch of pictures of Mr. Free from the upcoming LEGO Batman game.

You guys really like the GRiD demo, 1 million customers served

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Codemasters has revealed that people have downloaded the GRiD demo over 1 million times (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC version) since it was released a few weeks ago.  I'm guessing the chance to win a Mustang GT-R was enough to get to download and play the trial.  The current time to beat is 99 seconds and you have until May 25th to bag the top time for your chance to win the car so get cracking. Legends of Norrath stacks the deck with new card set, Oathbreaker

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Sony Online Entertainment's Legends of Norrath has brought its fourth card deck Oathbreaker to the online collectible strategy card game.  Scott Martins, director of development, SOE Denver, informs:  "With over 250 new card to enhance your strategies, Oathbreaker is a perfect point to jump into the game, just in time for the monthly Legends of Norrath Championship Series."  Said tournament brings 32 of the most hardcore manna tappers to Indianapolis's Gen Con Indy 2008 in the steamy month of August, and a total prize pool of $100,000 probably won't keep things cool. Guitar Hero Word Tour goes to eleven

by: John - - Comments (5)
Here's the first video of Guitar Hero World Tour sans game footage. What you get is a bunch of folks showing off the instruments along with the new drums. They also tout some new features such as battling with other bands and recording your own singles to share with others. Sounds interesting but I'm holding out for some footage. I just don't like having ANOTHER set of drums in the living room.

Radeons are going GDDR5 to the MAX!

by: John - - Comments (0)
AMD just announced today that they are going to be the first ones to use GDDR5 memory for their next line of ATI Radeon cards. For perspective, GDD5 has 5X the data rates as GDDR3 and 4X that of GDDR4 allowing for more bandwidth. The GDDR5 memory has an added benefit of increase calculation accuracy via error detection mechanisms built in. To help bring this to market, they are working with three vendors so they should have plenty of chips for their upcoming cards. [READ MORE]

CGS announcement: Pro Ams strike as a team

by: Nathan - - Comments (0)
The Championship Gaming Series has launched a Pro Am division for those of us who just can't seem to get sponsored. CGS Pro Am will launch this August and the competitions will take place on the CGS game servers and two finalists from each region will receive top seeding and travel packages to the CGS 2009 North American Combine. Right now only gamers from North America and Europe will be able to compete but I wouldn't be surprised if the Pro Am was expanded to include other continents next year. Did I mention that competitors will be playing Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2? I didn't? Well silly me. [READ MORE]

Donnie Darko is the Prince of Persia

by: John - - Comments (0)
It's official as Jake "My sister is dating Batman and Two-Face" Gyllenhaal will be the lead in the Prince of Persia: movie. Seeing as the movie is based on The Sands of Time, we probably won't see the Dark Prince but I'm betting we'll get hints of it during the movie, if not the end.  It's in the hands of a good director in Mike Newell who directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and some Young Indiana Jones shows to name a few. I don't know if I like the choice of Jake but I'll save my judgment until I see some pictures and footage.

This car is ALPHA Baby! ALPHA!

by: John - - Comments (2)
Kotaku has a fun little link to a guy selling a BMW M3 Coupe with a description that sounds suspiciously like Brucie from Grand Theft Auto IV. I'm sure he's getting a good deal amount of emails right now from Niko telling him he's going to steal the car he wanted and wondering where the next street race will be. I bet the car is all about power and when you buy it you have to touch the guy's pecs. You better be ice cold when you go buy this thing.  Since this is on Autotrader and will go away, I've posted his description after the jump.

More XBL releases, bigger limits

by: John - - Comments (2)
In an interview with David Edery, he talks a few things about Xbox Live Arcade and throws out some interesting nuggets. One is they are thinking of increasing weeks where more than one release will happen. I say it's about time. The other is they are increasing the size limit to 350MB for games. I say they shouldn't limit them. The last time the limit was raised was to accommodate Castlevania if I am not mistaken. We just heard Castle Crashes was finished. Could it be? Probably not but a new limit is nice and show give developers some more wiggle room especially for a title like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD.

Resistance 2 multiplayer overview provided by former GN writer

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here's an interview that current Insomniac Community manager and former GN writer James Stevenson did with the folks at 1UP about the multiplayer action in Resistance: Fall of Man 2.  I'm starting to get a bit stoked about the game after watching the interview and seeing the new screenshots that are up on the Sony blog.  If that doesn't get your juices going be sure to check out Insomniac's podcast which provides even more info on the game.

Gaming Gibs for 5/20/2008

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here are a few things I missed while being mesmerized by the cinematography of Douglas Slocombe:
  • Most average people like WiiFit
  • Jack Thompson fails again, how long until the ESA asks to get their legal fees back?
  • Design lessons from Boom Blox detailed
  • Maybe Activision/Vivendi and Lucasarts leaving the ESA isn't such a big deal after all (depends if they are followed or not)
  • Moving to Santa Monica cost the ESA how much??
  • Sony unveils a bit about The Agency, may or may not have to kill you after you read it
  • Why MMO's on a console may not work, someone should let Funcom and NC Soft know about this...

Polish developer, City Interactive, to teach Art of Murder to America

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Poland is invading North and Latin America in the form of videogame publisher and developer, City Interactive.  Based in Warsaw, Poland, City Interactive appointed Gabriel Del Castillo (formerly with IBM, Price Waterhouse, Andersen Consulting and others) as CEO Americas, and Lisa Rivera (formerly with Take Two Interactive, Nintendo of America, Inc. and GT Interactive) was appointed Vice President Sales North America.  City Interactive's flagship title, Art of Murder: FBI Confidential, is a PC adventure that has already cordoned the crime scene in Europe and will be available to us later this summer.  In addition, Code of Honor 2, a first-person shooter for PC, is expected to make the rounds -- and shoot off some rounds -- also later this summer.  These two games are PC-centered, but City Interactive has handheld and console experience as well, although there's nothing official yet beyond these first two offerings. Baja developer diary online - defines adventure in a new way

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here's the first developer diary for Baja, THQ's new off-road racing game based around the famed race.  The game's concept sounds cool but it's going to be hard going against the Motorstorm sequel that's going to hit around the same time.

E3 company roster updated, still sparse

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
The official E3 website has been updated and there are now 38 companies on the docket for the show.  It looks like the ESA has beefed up the list quite a bit not all of the new additions are game companies (such as the 1Up Network and Toshiba).  It's nice to see more companies on the list but I'm still not sure that E3 is going to be worth attending this year.
