ANNOUNCED: Tony Hawk Ride and its gigantic skateboard peripheral

More On: Tony Hawk Ride
We've known for some time that Activision was hard at work on a brand new Tony Hawk game.  Last year marked the first time in a decade that we didn't have a Tony Hawk sequel (unless you count the poorly-received Tony Hawk: Motion on the Nintendo DS) and there have been rumors swirling around the game coming with some sort of peripheral.  Well, thanks to GameTrailers.TV, we can now confirm those rumors.  It looks like Tony Hawk's tenth installment will be called Tony Hawk Ride and will feature a gigantic fake plastic skateboard.  Check out the picture below.

Unfortunately the above picture is just about the only information we have.  We know that the game is scheduled to come out on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii sometime this year.  One has to assume that this gigantic skateboard and the game will be on display at this year's E3, coming up in just a couple of weeks.  This is the second peripheral-based game to be announced by Activision in the last few weeks, the other being DJ Hero.  It remains to be seen if people will take to these more cumbersome controls like they did the sleek Guitar Hero guitars.

My knee jerk reaction is somewhat negative.  While I give kudos to Activision for trying something new, part of me worries about how fun it will be to stand on a fake plastic skateboard.  I worry that this may sound better on paper than it does in practice.  I wasn't impressed with the Wii Fit balance board integration in Skate It, so I remain skeptical.  The problem I had with the balance board was that it only reminded me that I wasn't actually on a skateboard.  This control also seems impractical for clumsy gamers and, more importantly, gamers with downstairs neighbors.  We'll have to see how Activision answers these critiques at E3 in June.

Update (Chuck):  Here's the trailer for the game.  Bonus points for using the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the trailer
