Race as your Mii in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

by: Marissa - -

If you don't feel like racing as Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Ryo, or Amigo, to name a few, you'll now be able to race as your Mii in the Wii version of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Each character, including your Mii, will have a signature All Star move only they can pull off to get back in the race if they lag behind. Still can't hang? Sorry, but if you can't move as fast as Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik), that's all the help Sega's able to give you.

CES Swag-a-thon 2010: Day One, Part 1

by: Ben Berry - -

This years CES is a veritable treasure trove of swag goodness just ripe for the picking. But like an artist, I scope the landscape of trinkets and knicknacks for only the best and brightest. Plus, this years messenger style press bag is a bit smaller than the backpacks of years past, meaning I need to be considerate of what I take. I don’t want to waste any of these goodies, and having to bypass something special because I have a full bag seems silly

So, following the first half of day one here are the goods :

backscratcher and hand sanitizer from the Peregrine glove keyboard booth - Both items are very useful in the conditions of CES, where you’re in the same clothes for sometimes 18 hours a day, and you shake a LOT of hands.

Light up keychain from Turtle Beach - This is your Stormtrooper of swag, there are millions of them. This one is both blue (my fav color), and has a pretty bright light. So it’s probably more like the Biker Scout of swag.

IaPeel Inkjet printable skin kit - This was the snag of day 1 so far. I just got a iPod Nano G5 for Christmas, and this 5 pack of printable skins for it was an ideal pickup. It’s not necessarily gaming related, but I may just do a mini review of it anyways.

iBUYPOWER pen/laser pointer/4GB USB drive - Most exclusive swag of the day so far; only way to get it was to meet with iBUYPOWER in their suite in the Venetian. It’s a quality pen with some real heft to it. Just missed out on swag of the day.

Lego figures - Lego Universe MMO is here demoing their game, and they have two different banks of figure parts (legs, torso, head and hat) where you can custom build and keep your own figures. Since the 2 banks have different pieces, I had to make two. The only reason these aren’t the run away swag of the week already is that they aren’t exclusive; anyone can walk into the booth and make a figure or two. I’ve already told the booth folks I’m coming back every day of the convention for more, and they were more than cool with it. We have time scheduled about the game on Saturday, so John and I will be making our way over there together.

Technology T-Shirt - I signed up for some mailing list about how technology is the only way to stave off economic recession long term. The shirt has a really cool blue hand-drawn logo.

Intellus Datecheck condom - Um, unless my mom is reading, then it’s a blue mint.

Picture of Elvis - 5 minutes onto the show floor this morning, I saw my first Elvis of the trip working one of the booths. He was kind enough to pose for this shot.

iBUYPOWER @ CES 2010

by: Ben Berry - -

I’m definitely not our most technically saavy gamer. Sure, back in the 90’s when I was modifying my hand built PC’s daily, and new every detail about every chip on the market. Nowadays, I let someone else spend the time it takes to trick out the machines I buy. That’s why I wanted to spend time with iBUYPOWER. They’ve got some really interesting products both already on the market and some more that may be headed our way.

In the area of already released products, there’s the Battalion line of gaming notebooks. Specifically, the Battalion Touch sub-line which features a single model now, but is about to receive a high powered big brother featuring an i7 processor. RuSE from UbiSoft will sport a multi-touch interface, and the Battalion line of Touch laptops is going to be first to market in supporting.

There’s also the recently released Chimera 2, which follows up the Chimera in the custom painted one price gets it all gaming rig. 3 models totaling 5 different primary configurations based on either AMD or Intel chipsets set this system apart as a powerhouse for desktop gaming systems.

Then there are the things that are still in the skunk works at iBUYPOWER; The LAN Warrior 2, a Xbox 360/PC Hybrid, and an item so secret, it still just has a codename.

The LAN Warrior 2 is a complete redesign of the case from the original LAN Warrior. It’s very solid state, with a large handle for hauling it around. A vast improvement over the original if I may say so. There of course will be an increase in power, and it seems that everything that iBUYPOWER does is designed with liquid cooling as an option.

The 360 PC Hybrid is essentially a 360 and a PC merged into a single case. While it’s still so early in the prototype phase that it’s a one of a kind unit, there could be a nice market for this unit if iBUYPOWER is able to navigate the landmines of warranties and licensing.

Finally, the codenamed project. My first thought was that the appropriate name for this unit is Darth Vader; It’s big, black, and pulsing with an evil red glow from inside. Designed from the ground up to support liquid cooling, it’s easily one of the largest desktop cases I’ve seen, rivaling the Level 10, and was reminiscent in size to the tower PC’s of the 80’s and 90’s. But that’s where any semblance of its forefathers ends. Even with massive video cards and the metalwork to support the liquid cooling they sport, there was a good 2 inches clearance between the video cards and the drive bays. The current prototype sports four 5.25” bays and four 3.5” bays, and it still seemed roomy.  I provided a lot of description here, because photos weren't allowed.

There’s a lot more to cover, and we’re working on a review of one of the multi-touch notebooks following the show, so I can provide more details then.

You Rock Guitar @ CES 2010

by: Ben Berry - -

In the continued search for products that take technology and gaming to the next level, I had to book time with the folks from Inspired Instruments to see the You Rock Guitar. In short, the You Rock Guitar is a digital guitar. Were it just a digital guitar, it would hardly be newsworthy as they have been around for years. Digital guitars use the MIDI specification to interface with computers, are expensive, and perhaps most importantly; due to MIDI this is often a significant delay between hitting a string and the sound reaching the speakers.

The You Rock is different in the fact that is uses a USB connection to directly interact music software which increases the speed of the music reaching the PC. While technically not new (I mentioned the LightSnake USB guitar cable at CES a couple of years ago), digital guitars have either been in the $2,000+ price range, or not worth using.

How does this relate to gaming? That’s what really sets the You Rock Guitar aside from the other digital guitars. The You Rock is specifically designed to also be used as a gaming controller for Rock Band, Guitar Hero, et al. The controller is universal, meaning there is only one version of the You Rock, you simply purchase cartridges for whichever gaming platform you’re playing on. The only drawbacks about this system that I see is that the unit requires a separate cartridge for Rock Band and Guitar Hero when you’re using it with the Wii, and that for the price of the guitar, a cartridge of your choosing should probably be included.

I fiddled around with a demo unit for a little while, and was surprised to find it really did seem like the ‘missing link’ between gaming controllers and guitars. You actually play strings, but the strings are only a few inches long. The fret board has raised ridges that approximate strings, and seem to do so pretty well. There’s a slight tackiness to the fret board in terms of feel, so that slides probably get easier as the unit ages.

There are a mess of other guitar centric features such as a multitude of preloaded guitar sounds, sampled from guitars from vintage to modern. There’s also a feature that reminded me of my old casio keyboard growing up; press a button and you get a prerecorded background track to play against. Along with all of the preloaded guitar sounds, you also get 50 popular backing tracks. Gaming even comes to play a little bit here as well: If you play a note that doesn’t fit with the chord the backing track is played in, you get a similar guitar fail sound to that which you hear in Rock Band.

The SRP for the Your Rock Guitar is $199, with street price expected to be around $179, and the cartridges run about $20 - $30 depending on platform. We should be reviewing the unit sometime in February, so we’ll have more on this interesting product then.

Dakim Brain Fitness @ CES 2010

by: Ben Berry - -

The has been a growing trend within the standard news media of reporting on the usage of gaming technologies to help the elderly. It has mostly been focused on how consumer systems such as the Wii have been used for socialization and rehabilitation in the senior community. With the negative light that gaming receives so often in news coverage I wanted to look further into the positive things done with gaming. That’s the reason I scheduled time with Dakim, even though it’s products are well outside the demographics for our readers.

Dakim Brain Fitness is a tool used to work with the elderly to improve or regain cognitive skills. It is most often used when working with Alzheimer’s patients to help re-learn or keep steady their memory and concentration skills. It works through a series of games. The individual games themselves are the kinds of games that anyone who has ever picked up a puzzle book would be familiar with. The twist is that these games are set up with the target audience in mind; movie clips from the 50’s and 60’s and themed games based on the types of interests often found among seniors.

Previously, Dakim Brain Fitness had only been available as a kiosk system with touch screen controls and automated updates via network connection. These kiosks were designed with senior living facilities in mind. The Brain Fitness program has now been released as software, usable on PC and Mac desktops.

Treyarch's turn to call you to duty

by: Nathan - -
Treyarch gets a bad rap for their sub-par Call of Duty follow ups to Infinity Ward's solid releases but Activision has given them another chance. So when is the next installment coming out? CVG has confirmed the rumor of a the release of the new Call of Duty sometime in November of 2010 from a fairly reliable source. No big surprises on the date but the source also confirmed the game will take place during the Vietnam conflict. Here's hoping Adrian Cronauer is a playable character.

Enjoy!

Guitar Hero’s January calendar is jam-packed with jams

by: Tina - -
It’s a new year, so you should be playing new songs off your Guitar Hero music library.

For the month of January, Activision wants to ensure that your rocking out on their games is diverse. You’ll notice that the downloadable track-packs, therefore, span several musical genre stylings brought to you by various artists.

The New Blues Masters Track Pack will be featuring – you guessed it! – blues music.
- “Who I am,” by Tyler Bryant
- “Lonesome Road Blues,” by Joe Bonamassa
- “Broken Man,” by Scott McKeon

I’m not sure that Vampire Weekend qualifies as a musical genre, but on January 14th Guitar Hero gamers can pick up a downloadable track pack featuring two songs off their upcoming album, Contra.
- “Holiday,” from Contra
- “Cousins,” from Crontra
- “The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance,” from Vampire Weekend

Metal also makes further appearances in the music library with artists making their Guitar Hero debut.
- “Still I Rise,” by Shadows Fall
- “Twilight of the Thunder God,” by Amon Amarth
- “Laser Canon Deth Sentence,” by Dethkloks

Lastly, for another artist-focused track pack, January 28th will reveal three tracks by Creedence Clearwater Revival
- “Proud Mary,” from Bayou Country
- “Bad Moon Rising,” from Green River
- “Travelin’ Band,” from Cosmo’s Factory

Read on for pricing and release date details for respective platforms. [READ MORE]

Project 72: How long does it take to make an iPhone game?

by: Jeremy - -
How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie-roll center of... wait a minute... wrong question.

How many hours does it take to successfully develop an iPhone game, start to scratch?  The crew over at Dogtownstudios looks to possibly answer that question, or at least see if they can do it in 72 hours or less with Project 72.  This posting is a little late to the party as the project is about halfway through at this point, but there is still plenty of interesting progress to be seen.  The crew of four people are looking to build an original game, from scratch, for Apple's iPhone.  They started back on January 5, 2010 and have a website up that is following the entire project via blog postings and a live video feed, start to finish.  If you have ever wondered just what goes into the development of a game, even on a small scale, this project is worth checking out and following...

New Backbreaker trailer is actual in-game footage

by: Nathan - -
Backbreaker hasn't been delayed into oblivion just yet but it has been a while since we were first introduced to the euphoria motion synthesizing behemoth. 505 games, the most recent hands in the Backbreaker cookie jar, has released a new trailer which is a goo thing seeing how the game is set to come out in the next 6 months. The press release needs some updated language though. Somewhere in the past two years the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 transitioned from next-generation to current-generation.

Atlus announces Hexyz Force for the PSP

by: Tina - -
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey isn’t Atlus’ only handheld RPG coming out this year. They have officially announced HexyzForce with a release date of May 25th of this year.

Like a movie pursuing two narratives that seamlessly tie in at the end, Hexyz Force has two separate campaigns explaining two spectrums of the entire saga of the world’s imminent destruction.

Each campaign amounts to 25 hours, resulting in 50 or more hours of RPG time. The 3D world is complimented by an accumulated 20 minutes of animated cut scenes. Atlus also promises quick battles with flexible strategy and minimal load time. After all, who wants to focus on load screens and long battle menus when you’re gaming on the go?

Nyko shows off latest tech at CES

by: Sean Colleli - -
One thing I like about Nyko is that they're always improving on their tech. At CES this week they have a number of new products on display and each one is a big improvement on something either Nyko has done or one of the first party peripherals.

Their Wii remote induction charger now has a 4 dock design in the Charge Base Quad IC. It also comes in traditional Wii white or gloss black.

For the PS3 Slim they have the Intercooler Slim, an update to the original Intercooler for the chunky PS3. The PS3 Slim also get the Media Hub Slim, which doubles the number of USB ports on the console and adds an SD card slot.

Most exciting (for me at least) is the Wand Plus. It's a refit of Nyko's excellent answer to the Wii remote, the Wand, but this one incorporates Nyko's version of the Wii MotionPlus tech right into the controller. That's right, no more clunky dongles or updated rubber sleeves, if you have the Wand Plus you're ready to play. It also includes Nyko's Trans-Port technology. The best part is that the Wand Plus will retail for $39.99 this March, a full ten bucks less than Nintendo's WiiMotion Plus bundle.

I've always found Nyko's products to be of high quality and I'm envious of my fellow staffers who get to go hands on with this stuff this week. Most of these new items come out in March or April, with the Intercooler Slim dropping in February.

More Battlefield moments from Battlefield:Bad Company 2 revealed

by: Chuck - -
EA's released another combat clip from Battlefield:Bad Company 2 that shows off another one of those weird/awesome moments that happen to occur in their games quite frequently.   The coolest part of this clip is watching the two groups of ATV's jumping over the tank in order to blow it up from behind although the end shot with the UAV taking out another tank is also pretty sweet.

Be sure to check out my impressions from the closed beta if you want to know more about the game.

Nier officially coming this Spring

by: Jeremy - -
Square Enix put the rumors to rest this morning by officially announcing that their upcoming action-RPG Nier will be launching this Spring.  Nier is a completely new franchise being brought to us by the same "house" that has brought us some of the best RPG's in the industry over the past 20+ years.  Nier isn't a straight forward, turn based RPG as many expect... rather it is being billed as the perfect blend of action and RPG elements.  While no specific date was listed, Square assures us that Nier will hit store shelves in North America before the Summer begins...

Release date and details on Halo Legends

by: Nathan - -
A Halo movie was finally made and is ready for release, on DVD and Blu-Ray. Halo Legends may not be the live action Halo movie fans were hoping for but that doesn't mean it isn't 100% halo-y. Warner home video has released the date, February 9th, and details on the three different physical forms the motion picture will take. Broken down for your convenience:

Single Disc DVD: has the movie and is priced at $19.98 (SRP)
2-Disc DVD special edition: full movie, widescreen, audio commentary, and two documentaries at the price of $29.98 (SRP)
Single Disc Blu-Ray: Everything that the 2-disc DVD edition has with a bonus documentary at $34.99 (SRP)

The official movie website promises digital copies for those 360 owners who dare not speak of the console who's name ends in 3 and does not own a Blu-Ray player. There are no details on price or features included with the digital copy but I'm assuming it will come out on the same day as the physical discs.

Army of Two:The 40th Day gets a TV ad

by: Chuck - -
With the release of Army of Two:The 40th Day less than a week away it was only a matter of time before we got a TV ad for the game (which you can see below).  I'm hoping the game builds on what we saw on the demo (which was pretty solid) and delivers a slightly less "brotastic" experience than the first game.

CES 2010: Sony Press Event

by: Dan - -
After skimming through the live blog that Chuck and Nathan did of the Sony Press event, it appears they covered almost all of the important topics. I know we saw clips of God of War III, Heavy Rain and MAG during the press event (and one other 3D game), but Sony really skimmed over gaming for the most part. This is despite the fact that around 20% of their booth is taken up by gaming related displays.

Sony did mention that the PS3 would be getting a firmware upgrade in the future that will allow it to play 3D Blu-Ray and (probably) games. There was also a brief mention regarding the PS3 and PSP in the role of device connectivity.

Something else worth mentioning was the decision by Sony to support SD and SDHC. This is a huge concession for them, and one that was apparently swayed by the consumer. They plan to sell SD and Micro SD cards that range from 2 – 32 GB in size. Let us hope that in the future PSP versions, they switch to the more common and cheaper Micro SD instead of the Pro Duo and Micro.

I will take a closer look at the new Bravias, home theater systems and of course the 3D gaming and other games on display when I take my booth tour on Friday.

Update(Chuck) - Pretty sure Dan meant God of War III

New Gran Turimo 5 trailer shows off the Mercedes SLS

by: Chuck - -
It looks like the Mercedes SLS will be making it's video game debut in Gran Turismo 5 according to this latest trailer from Sony.  The trailer is shot in a Top Gear style with frequent cuts between real life footage of the car and in-game footage.  The game looks very impressive and the only thing we really need now is the game and a free week to play it.
